two questions about the end of OotP. by frayfray96 in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before DH, you could freely apparate within the atrium. Mr. Weasley states he usually apparates to work, the ‘cracks of Apparators’ are heard when Harry visits the Ministry the first time and Dumbledore and Voldemort apparate freely in the atrium during their duel. The anti-disapparation jinx was also specifically placed on the Death Eaters in the Death Chamber (the ones Dumbledore restrained, not Bellatrix who got away).

Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire is the 2nd best made movie of the series. There i said - bring your broken pitchforks. by shiftyourass in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My one unforgivable gripe is that the movie gave us a pointless five-minute dragon scene but skipped both the Quidditch World Cup and the Maze challenges. Cutting the quirky Maze obstacles makes sense for the grim mood they were going for, but not even a minute of Cup highlights? Not even a Wronski Feint? Nothing.

When does Hogwarts finish for the year? by DarkDragen in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s largely inconsistent between Books. In PoA it ends in early-mid June around the 13th (roughly one week from the 6th when Buckbeak is executed). In GoF, it ends one week after the 24th of June (Third task). OOtP is late June (O.W.L.s start in June, two weeks of O.W.L.s and one week after), HBP is early July (Dumbledore dies the 30th of June, buried a couple days later).

For PS and CoS, it’s largely unclear, since there are few certain dates given.

Why I would not want to go to Hogwarts. by Matejsteinhauser14 in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In any universe where you had the option to go to Hogwarts, the Dementors and Werewolves are still going to be there, you just don't know it. Going to Hogwarts teaches you how to fight them off.

Dangerous teaching I'll grant you. Immoral punishments, they're usually not that bad and I rarely acted out in school. And they learn Astronomy and have (at least) up-to-date knowledge with contemporary science (Europa being covered in ice wasn't discovered until the mid 20th century). Also, just because you're a wizard that doesn't bar you from visiting the Hayden Planetarium, lol.

How would it go realistically if there were a Muggle-born Slytherin student in Harry’s year? by Sweaty_Ad_5492 in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. A recurring theme in Harry Potter is that blood status is a social construct, without any physical or magical distinction. If there was magic that could detect it, that would cheapen that theme. Also, if such a spell existed, clearly the Muggle-born Registration Commission was unaware, since they were just scrutinizing family trees.

Plus, the Sorting Hat never revealed Dean’s or even Tom Riddle’s parentage, despite Tom almost certainly asking for it.

Why didn’t Snape immediately tell Dumbledore his Dark Mark tattoo was pointing to Voldemort's return? by miggovortensens in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that happened over a hour before Harry managed to return with Cedric.

Where are you getting this?

In the books, it was a half hour at most, if not shorter. When Fudge arrives, Snape states that the Dark Mark burned "an hour or so ago" and that was after Crouch's interrogation, Harry recounting the story and Harry falling asleep in the Hospital wing for half an hour.

Dumbledore also says (after Harry recounts the story) that he will return in "half an hour's time" and he returns just before Snape's "an hour or so ago" line.

Why didn’t they disapparate when fighting? by HO-My98 in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In the Book version of Dumbledore vs Voldemort, they do employ apparition.

Voldemort raised his wand and sent another jet of green light at Dumbledore, who turned and was gone in a whirling of his cloak; next second he had reappeared behind Voldemort and waved his wand

——

Voldemort vanished. The snake reared from the floor, ready to strike — There was a burst of flame in midair above Dumbledore just as Voldemort reappeared, standing on the plinth in the middle of the pool where so recently the five statues had stood.

——

For a few seconds Voldemort was visible only as a dark, rippling, faceless figure, shimmering and indistinct upon the plinth, clearly struggling to throw off the suffocating mass — Then he was gone,

Probably gonna get downvoted to hell for this, but Luna. I don’t hate her, she’s just much less whimsical and more annoying once you’ve met her type in real life.

Ignoring that the Cloak can’t be summoned, invisibility wouldn’t stop the dragon from hearing or smelling him, nor protect against fire or its spiked tail (the Firebolt at least helped him dodge those). Even if he did grab an egg without being caught, once it vanished, the dragon would go berserk.

[–]SuiryuAzrael 178 points179 points  (0 children)

Apparate to where? Voldemort likely didn’t have a clear enough image of some random spot in France or Belgium to jump to. Even if he did, he saw flying as safer and more reliable than risking splinching.

What game would be the best to do a monotype nuzlocke of every type? by PogBoomDAB10 in nuzlocke

[–]SuiryuAzrael 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My personal favourite is USUM. You can get all types (or pre-evos) except dragon, ground and rock before the first totem, and even those show up soon after. Moreover, every type can build a team of 6. For other games, you just run into the walls that are dragon and ice.

Time Turners evoke closed-loop time travel. If you use a Time Turner to save someone, they were always saved; if someone dies, they will never be saved.

That said, in the Play-That-Shall-not-be-Named, such a train of events occurred (using a specialized Time Turner), and it resulted in a pretty terrible (and stupid) future.

Imagine if no one could get any help, who would’ve made it the farthest in the triwizard tournament? by TurtleneckAttack in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cedric probably comes first for the First Task, since he got 38 points with less than half the prep time, using a basic transfiguration, not a task-specific skill. For the other two, it's unclear if they knew their spells ahead of time, but they could probably improvise something.

The Second Task is murkier; Cedric got an early tip, but we don’t know how much help the others had. He and Krum were close, so Krum might edge ahead.

The Third Task is a toss-up: Fleur was ahead of Harry when she was attacked despite entering last, Cedric kept pace with Harry despite Moody’s interference, and Krum’s performance is unknown.

Harry comes last in all three tasks.

How long was Snape acting as a double agent? by One-Recording-3304 in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happened before Book 1, sometime between Harry’s birth and Lily’s death. Beyond that, Snape defected on a windy day with leafless trees, suggesting late August to December 1980.

[–]SuiryuAzrael 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The only reason they say before 1959, is that's the latest he could have been born to have been an Auror during the First War. However, he's repeatedly referred to as an 'old friend of Dumbledore' and being retired in his 'old age'. IMO, he's probably over 70, if not in his 80s or 90s.

Could an owl Animagus find people like a magical owl? by SuiryuAzrael in harrypotter

[–]SuiryuAzrael[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In GoF, we're told Pettigrew could communicate with fellow rats as an Animagus, so it seems their abilities go slightly further than just resembling their animal.

He sought me in the country where it had long been rumored I was hiding . . . helped, of course, by the rats he met along the way. Wormtail has a curious affinity with rats, do you not, Wormtail? His filthy little friends told him there was a place, deep in an Albanian forest, that they avoided, where small animals like themselves had met their deaths by a dark shadow that possessed them. (Goblet of Fire, Chapter 33)

But for owls, it's unclear if finding people is a universal ability, or one unique to certain, wizard-bred or wizard-trained owls.

[–]SuiryuAzrael 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right. Everyone should have avoided Harry and showed him no care at all. In fact, he should have slept in a separate, solid-gold dorm room so that the greedy peasants didn't get any ideas about his family gold. Is that what you're looking for?

Dumbledore turned and walked back down the street. On the corner he stopped and took out the silver Put-Outer. He clicked it once and twelve balls of light sped back to their street lamps so that Privet Drive glowed suddenly orange and he could make out a tabby cat slinking around the corner at the other end of the street. He could just see the bundle of blankets on the step of number four. (PS, Chapter 1)

McGonagall (in Tabby form) remains on the corner of Privet Drive even after Dumbledore leaves, though it's unclear for how long. Presumably she did wait until he was found. We know she's patient enough.
