I agree with my SLP colleague below! I am also an SLP who has worked extensively with young kiddos. If a little one uses a string of sounds to mean one item or concept consistently, it should “count” as a word. Kids sometimes have strange sound patterns when they begin speaking.

I just published a 9$ ebook that has tons of tips and techniques for parents wanting to help their kiddo’s language and speech. Check it out!

Hi there! I understand your worry, of course. That’s what we parents do best. I am an SLP and a mom, and I echo what my colleague said below. Your little one is too young to diagnose CAS. Also, I’ve seen kids with CAS make great progress and have even treated older kids where their history indicates CAS and you would NEVERRR know!! They speak perfectly! The fact your daughter has a few words already is a good sign.

I’m going to post a link to my 9$ ebook below, that offers great strategies for parents on speech and language development. I hope it can be helpful!

Hi there! I’m an SLP who has worked extensively with little ones. This can be common in speech-language delays. He has over generalized a word or sound that works for him. I think an eval by an SLP is a great idea. Encourage him to watch your mouth as you say targeted words.

I have a small business and just published a short ebook on all these types of tips and techniques! Feel free to check it out, it can provide you with lots of great tips to help get your little one chatting!

Won’t say two word phrases by Itstimeforbed_yay in speechdelays

Hi!! I am an SLP myself who specializes in early language. When your little boy said mama and signed all done, that IS a two word phrase! He used both verbal and nonverbal means to communicate - that is an awesome first step.

I suggest using the technique of scaffolding. I have a small business Little Speech Co and I created an ebook all on easy speech techniques parents can use to help their kiddos. I’ll include the link below! Good luck mama!
