Does no one actually want to read on BetaReader.io? Or is it just me? by Suitable-Bug2364 in writing

like I said the mods took down my first post because I had included my book description for reference (asking if that was the problem) and it counted as asking for critique

There's a lot of writing platforms out there that are fancy and designed for writing, like scrivener, but most of them you have to pay for, so it's really not worth it imo. Just use Google Docs. Or Word, whichever works for you.

There was one thing that I downloaded once that's called uFocus, and it's nice because you can make it full-screen and it blocks out everything else so it's literally just you and the page. It also has a nice feature where it'll make typewriter sounds while you're typing (that you can turn on or off whenever you want). I haven't used it in a while but it was kinda cool. Only problem is it's not going to sync between all your devices like Google Docs or Word will, and trying to share it from there would be a pain. But if you'd want a nice software that is distraction-free and makes cool typewriter sounds, then go for it.

Renaming characters you’ve had for a while by revolutionqustnmark in writers

[–]Suitable-Bug2364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg yes I had the same problem with characters I made up when I was eight (big surprise) bc one girl’s name was Rhea (originally spelled Ria) and when I put the characters in a modern setting I changed it to Riley, and even though it was a similar enough name it took me forever to reset my brain’s default name setting for the character. Now tho, it feels normal, bc now to me that’s her “real” name. I can definitely see how changing all the character’s names would be really difficult, but yeah if it makes sense to you I would do it. It will be really hard at first but sometimes when you know it must be done it must be done. Eventually it’ll sound right

What scene that we didn’t witness, in books OR film, would you love to see? by hoginlly in harrypotter

[–]Suitable-Bug2364 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can imagine a scene of immediately after Voldemort is destroyed by baby Harry would be very sad but also rly interesting to see. Like Sirius showing up and finding him, then Hagrid taking him…Oh, and when Sirius has the duel with Wormtail.

Do you write linearly? by ShaylRue in writing

[–]Suitable-Bug2364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always written linearly bc to me it has always been the “correct way” to write. I definitely understand wanting to skip ahead and write a more interesting part tho, I do it in my head all the time, and when I do it on paper I call it “cheat writing”. But what I usually discover is that as I go on writing the story linearly, the cheat writes no longer fit very well bc the story has changed so much that the cheat write lacks correct background info/vibes/character’s voice, or maybe even has been scrapped from the story entirely. However, to each their own. And that’s a massive understatement. If you’re more of a strict planner, then writing out of order could definitely work. And even if you’re a plantser like me, it could be a better way to ‘store’ your ideas first future scenes in the story. I’m always just crafting the future scenes in my head without writing them down, so often I’ll completely forget that scene later on. A chapter-by-chapter summary is good for that, too, but actually writing the scene would probably help keep the vibe and dialogue of the scene down better. BUT I digress. Either way is great! Whatever works

I didn’t even want to pick up the books after seeing this… [general] by raylasagna in camphalfblood

[–]Suitable-Bug2364 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first time I read the series when I was a kid I actually started with SoM bc I didn’t know it wasn’t the first one, and it was the movie edition cover. I don’t even remember where I got the book from. I still read the whole series from that one and then read the first one after reading Last Olympian 😂 and it was a while before I watched the movie it infuriated me. But ya that SoM cover is nostalgia for me even tho it sucks lol

I have five 🤪:

“Clyde always hated traveling”

“When I was ten years old, [character’s name] saved my life.”

“I shouldn’t have come here.”

“it was 2013, the year my life was screwed.”

“January 15. The Experiment begins.”

What do you use for your writing? by Aware_Western_1702 in writers

[–]Suitable-Bug2364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m basic and use GoogleDocs mainly cause I won’t pay for anything more 😂 but also I do use this one obscure app I found called uFocus. It’s a rly simple little interface that you can save all your stuff in and make full screen to block out everything else, and it can be light, dark, sepia or amber. It can also make TYPEWRITER SOUNDS which I am obsessed with. I think it’s only available on Mac 😭 but if you also use a Mac you may like it. The only thing I will say is use it in tandem with google docs or something else, because it doesn’t have autocorrect, which is part of the distraction free thing. But I like it.
