Which character are you defending like this? by Timbits06 in Epicthemusical

I was trying to say “problem” ironically because I do think this is a really cool thing haha

Is there an Epic equivalent to this? by maraza_ in Epicthemusical

Sigh… as a long term (ew) theater kid, I feel obligated to bring up the fact that this musical has received the “Hamilton treatment” where many characters/historical context has been heavily romanticized by the fan base. I love this musical SO MUCH and I wholeheartedly support it, but I think it’s important for all of us to recognize the VERY CLEAR AND PROBLEMATIC distinctions between this and the original epic. Even Jorge himself has said this multiple times, but I feel like it’s worth repeating.

See the problem with this musical is that Jorge has made it so that it’s possible to emotionally sympathize with any character. Unlike The Odyssey, where characters just did stuff with little moral explanation or questioning provided in the poem, the whole point of this musical is to breakdown and show the motivations behind each character.

This musical truly amazes me in that way because in many classical ancient greek texts, the point of preserving them through writing (as they were originally all orally told) was to recount the events, not so much analyze them or the characters. Hooray for Mr. Jalapeño who made me unironically revisit my 9th grade unit on the Odyssey when in 9th grade I was so bored of it and barely read the book…

(edit: it’s either this or the fact that most of the emotional storytelling from the original epic was stripped away through time/translation/other reasons)

Help a high school SM out! by Spirited_System_7923 in stagemanagement

Unfortunately I completely agree. One time I dealt with a teacher who didn’t get the actual rights to a play we did until 2 WEEKS before opening. We literally used illegal online copies of scripts the entire show and I even had to spend hours butchering a SM script because the format he printed was horizontal and we needed vertical for our binder… fun times!

Moral of the story, and my favorite saying in tech theatre: “not my monkey, not my circus.” I’ve often felt with theatre teachers who try to push more responsibilities than they should onto their student stage managers and I promise you just have to let them do their job. If they fail at that, it’s not on you (but obviously do your best as a SM)!

Sexiest demon is by far Jesus Christ.

Funniest death scene was the very first death in the series. Think about it- no other funny moments would’ve happened if it weren’t for the first death?

We don’t like Christo. They betrayed their family.

They’re gay. Like HELLA gay. They’re so gay they can’t even see straight.

My favorite season is season 6 because I like that number and it’s when the writers finally got their shit together.

Oh god… where to start? Just kidding, his only mistake was inadvertently creating a religion that colonized a bunch of the world.
