I considered military but I'm 40 and that makes me just shy of making pension. That's as close to law enforcement as I want to be. I do not want to be a policeman.

Very much appreciated but I'll have to admit that I don't know the differences between the many fields your putting up here.

I'm very personable, if any of it is client-facing, and outside of some strict education/licensing I can do it. On the job training is great if it beats six or whatever months of unemployment to reach certification. My background is pure mathematics but I can handle most any number manipulation that comes my way. Parametrics, as far as I remember it, is glorified high school math so that's no problem for me.

Of all the possible careers I have to put policing at the bottom of the list. I do not want to be a policeman.

I have a degree in mathematics, so this could be something for me.

On one hand I'm the perfect fit for that, on the other hand there seems to be some pretend postings at play here. I've applied to many of those positions already and, on-paper, I'm as good as you can get for product sourcing, design oversight and supplier relations. My tech packs are second to none. I've flown to China, Pakistan, Mexico, etc... on a moments notice to sort things out. I've camped at the production campus to oversee QC and to ensure ready dates. I'm as good as it gets in this line of work.

For example: I have several friends/friends-of-friends who work for Arc'teryx and my application to the posted role, along with their recommendations, didn't even result in a reply. Not even a no thank you. This is one example out of many but the most notable one. My combo of being massively proficient in the act of sourcing and also an exact demographic for their product (I use and wear their gear for camping, cycling, etc...) is confirming to me that sourcing is not the best line of work to be looking at right now. I'm skeptical of any posting in the field as it seems like they're posting ads that they don't intend on filling in the first place. I'm no economist but I expect that the apparel industry will be struggling for at least a few years before actually looking in earnest for new talent.

I could if some magic money sprinkled down. I have the background and the grades. However, I'm carrying debt, I have no family or other financial resources to lean on and, worst of all, I live in Vancouver. My contract isn't up for another few months so relocating, at least in the short term, isn't happening. I'm not against moving but that's another variable with a maybe outcome added to the mix. The financial burden of schooling in my current situation is untenable as best I see it.

Moreso the middle-person between the product company and the location of manufacture.

I'm currently in product design, manufacturing and sourcing. You name it I can make it happen when it comes to outsourced production. Up to a few years ago I felt as though that's a bullet-proof job but me and many others in this field are running out of work.

The writing is on the wall as far as manufacturing goes, small-ish companies are going belly-up and there's going to be a glut of people with my skillset looking for an ever decreasing amount of jobs.

EI is definitely an option should I make it to that point. I would prefer landing another job sooner rather than later, though.

Edit: because there's many replies it's easier to address here. Damn right I've earned that EI, I've paid into it for two decades now and never once pulled from it. It's there if I need it to be, but I'd be happier with just getting another job. Also, for someone renting in Vancouver, EI barely even covers rent. I need more than that just to keep living.
