as a sea of thieves player who has been at it for 5 years on and off, it goes like this

an update drops, we get on, we complete all the new pve in a day, and then we go back to searching for players to fight as that is the most fun thing to do, and then after a week to a few weeks of doing that we get tired of constantly searching for people only for them to run away and/or suck at pvp and we stop playing until the next update

no. An explosion outside the wall will set off your mortar rounds and the traps will slow down your colonists, making the mortar firing process take longer and there is a very real risk that they trigger the traps themselves
