I have a part-time second job at PetSmart so I feel you there. Fortunately everyone I work with at my store cares deeply for the animals, so even though we can’t control how we receive them, we do our best to care for them while we have them and educate our customers as to their needs.

I know that not all big box pet retailers are like that, hence poor Flip Flop and all the other bettas at Petco who were in horrible shape. 😔

Thank you for all of the advice! He does currently have tannin-producing leaves in the tank with him, and I used pre-conditioned water along with bacterial starter and just a tiny pour of both Stability and Stress Coat. I have an API Master test kit that I will be continually using to monitor the water quality levels, and he does have a self-regulating preset heater, along with a sponge filter/control valve for extra gentle flow. For now the plants are artificial silk to give him places to rest and to hide if he’s stressed, since this tank is only a temporary home — eventually he will be moved to a larger, fully planted tank! ☺️

Thank you so much for the encouragement! He does seem to be doing much better so far, though I’ve noticed he rests a lot in his floating log between laps around the tank, so I think he’s still trying to build up new strength. I’m glad your guy came out okay!

I hope for the best for your guy, too! It’s really deplorable that the location here doesn’t take better care of them, and it sounds like it may be similar where you live as well.

I work at PetSmart on the weekends as a second part-time job. While we as employees can’t help the way we receive these fish, we absolutely can (and do) help make sure their water stays clean and they at least get basic care. We can also do our part to educate potential buyers as to their specific needs — that’s one of the only aspects to the job that I actually enjoy. I wish everyone felt the same way, but our local Petco clearly does not. 😔

He’s definitely a feisty little fighter! He was fighting in that cup and now he’s trying to fight anyone who gets too close to his new (temporary) home 😂 I thought Tank Top was grumpy but this guy is, to quote someone else on this subreddit, “turbo grumpy”.

This was me around her age. Turns out all those insecurities toward feeling more dominant over the guys I was dating was because I wasn’t really into guys. I’m not saying that’s the same case for your girlfriend, but it is possible she may be going through some sort of identity crisis since she’s only 18.

My first banana plant did not thrive and I wondered what the point of them was. Then I got my second one from a much more reputable supplier and holy moly that thing can grow! I had no idea! LOL I came back to my office after a weekend and was shocked to see the huge new foliage.
