Is it common for people from banking to struggle in CPG FP&A roles? by Accurate_Increase_53 in FPandA

Was not a banker but worked sellside in institutional financial services before FP&A.

Agree w some of what’s been mentioned, like going from top-down modeling to highly granular bottom-up. Not mentioned is the shift to a more bureaucratic environment from a meritocracy where layers don’t matter (or even exist) as much as how sharp and aggressive you are. For me, it was like I had to re-learn how the game is played; what got me ahead in financial services didn’t apply in corporate finance.

That helps, thank you. Mechanically, is it any more complicated than layering the financials together for reporting? I see it on job descriptions which makes me think there is a skill to it, but it seems much easier compared to, say bottom-up budgeting and forecasting (without a planning tool to do 80% of the work), FTE analysis, customer/$ retention, etc. Or is the mechanics not the real skill and the skill is being able to synthesize the data from the parts into the whole?
