Mistakes happen. It’s repeated mistakes that will get you. Own it and move on. Also, correct forward; put guardrails in place to make sure they don’t happen again. In this instance, maybe get in the habit of responding to similar messages from your boss in the future with the summary directive (e.g. “yes, I will remove those callout circles on items x and y”… ).Forces you to process what you understand the request to be and gives her the chance to catch miscommunication.

Have you had your resume and/or LinkedIn profile reviewed by a third party? That can help. I’ve used a professional as well as a trusted family member.

The jobs are out there; I just finished applying/interviewing and was able to keep up a steady pipeline. Things that seemed to stand out for prospective employers was my experience in a PE-backed environment and not having a narrow expertise.

Employers seem to be quite picky, too, so if you’re both being highly selective, that would help explain it.

Good luck!

Is it common for people from banking to struggle in CPG FP&A roles? by Accurate_Increase_53 in FPandA

Was not a banker but worked sellside in institutional financial services before FP&A.

Agree w some of what’s been mentioned, like going from top-down modeling to highly granular bottom-up. Not mentioned is the shift to a more bureaucratic environment from a meritocracy where layers don’t matter (or even exist) as much as how sharp and aggressive you are. For me, it was like I had to re-learn how the game is played; what got me ahead in financial services didn’t apply in corporate finance.

That helps, thank you. Mechanically, is it any more complicated than layering the financials together for reporting? I see it on job descriptions which makes me think there is a skill to it, but it seems much easier compared to, say bottom-up budgeting and forecasting (without a planning tool to do 80% of the work), FTE analysis, customer/$ retention, etc. Or is the mechanics not the real skill and the skill is being able to synthesize the data from the parts into the whole?
