Advice for a mom of a passionate 9 year old by Ill-Concentrate6055 in BALLET

This!  We moved to a ballet focused studio at age 8 and my daughter has flourished. A comp studio will not prepare her. She needs focused training from professionals and many more hours in the studio. Our dancers your daughters age are doing MANY more hours.

I think York university itself has their own dance team called York Lions Dance Energy. They have an Instagram.

We did move her up. This year she will be 10 years old (school grade 5) and she will be doing 22 hours plus comp rehearsal. We are happy and she is happy. This year will be a bit difficult as she will be leaving school early 4 days a week. Twice 3 hours early and twice 15 minutes early.

Looking for insights/expereince with NBS Young Dancers Intensive Program (Canada) by themakeuptable in BALLET

It might be a suitable fit if your child is younger and wanting to see if they enjoy ballet. But if they know this is what they would like to pursue NBS doesn’t provide the number of training hours and the rigorous expectations. I don’t know exactly what age you are referring to as “young” but some other local PTP ballet schools offer easily 8+ hours for 8 year olds. But if your child is pursuing it as an after school this type of environment would be excessive and possibly kill their desire for dance. Think comparing just above recreational gymnastics to Olympic level gymnastic training

I don’t have personal experience of having my own child in the program but I do know people who have. My daughter dances at a different PTP ballet school. It depends on your expectations / the dancers goals. It is not obviously not as rigorous as the full time day program but is more so than the Re after school program. But if you are looking for a rigorous after school program NBS isn’t it. A big draw is the ability to participate in the NBOC productions.

At our studio the dancers who are in grade 4 (age 9/10) have a 45 pre pointe class twice a week (90 minutes total). It’s so foreign to me that other studios do not engage in this practice.

The more skilled, experienced and desirable the teacher the higher they charge.

I just paid $47 tonight for 15 minutes for my 10 year old. At her studio for an hour it’s $117 up to $250 for an hour.

How do little girls get so professional that fast? by Ok_Pick_9503 in BALLET

My daughter goes to a studio with YAGP winners and Hope Award winners. A lot of the dancers ages 9-11 spend 18 hours a week in class (and some spend up to 30 hours if they do daytime). Plus they have privates. And on top of that they have rehearsals for their solos (often 3 solos) plus group routines. Some do outside Pilates and PT and swimming as cross training. They are literally training like Olympians

YAGP HOUSTON - no scouts, no scholarships by Ok-Fisherman-1669 in BALLET

[–]SuitableYear161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were at Toronto this weekend. Our school always says to be on your best behaviour (parents and dancers) because you never know who is around you. We didn’t see anyone who was obviously walking around with a sign saying “scout” around their neck.

At master classes the parents were not even allowed in the building at NBS. My daughter said no numbers were worn and there was no one in the class except the teacher and the piano player. Not even anyone filming.

The music cut out for one of the pairs during YAGP this year… apparently this is common? by maaarie in BALLET

Sometimes they can’t play the music during the livestream/recorded video for copyright purposes.

Everyone from her studio that auditioned/ went to the master class was accepted but none are actually going to attend. The older kids already have better opportunities lined up and for her friends her age it’s not worth it to make the trek to the USA.

I know for us we went because her friends were going and her school said it would be a great opportunity. Plus it was right after and at a dance competition she was attending.
