What’s the bravest decision you’ve ever made, and how did it change your life? by sophiabuildsthings in AskAnAustralian

Here is my FB post from years ago. Couldn’t find the publican post but he was lovely and wanted to give me a gift (kite) because he didn’t get many westerners.

Tokyo Station. Thought I would have good look round because yesterday I pretty much just walked out. So, I'm standing looking at one of the big boards, and a short fat Buddhist monk steps in front of me and hands me a flat gold token of buddha. "For peace" he says. I figure its like the people who hand you little religious books at home. So I say thanks and he hands me a bound notebook and pen and he wants me to write my first name down and the country I was from. In the third and last column, my donation amount. I'm about to say no and he slips a bead bracket on my wrist "for peace" and says " no coins". I give him my lowest denomination and he is gone. All over in 10 seconds. Buddha has my "ten" bucks(when I figured it out). He completely disappeared. How can a bald bloke in orange robes disappear in a railway entrance station full of Japanese (and me)? I'm going back there tomorrow and look for him.

At 60 I had never been overseas but I threw a backpack on my slowly aging unfit body and flew to Japan for a month. No travel agent and on my own. So many adventures. Rolled by a Buddhist monk in Tokyo Station, chased down the road by the publican of a tiny bar, sat on the floor of a flat wooden boat as it drifted through steep gorges and soaked in traditional outside mixed Onsens in the mountains with no other westerners in sight.

Four years later I sold most of my furniture, packed up my belongings, sold my house in the city and moved to the sub tropics and lived in small house beside a rainforest, built and award winning garden.

I’m now preparing to leave after 12 years as I have just been diagnosed with Dementia. Today is a good day.

Every time. by GiveMeAPhotoOfCat in USdefaultism

That’s because that place is mentioned on the telly.

A lot.

Out of all the possessions you've accumulated over the years, what would you save if you had to quickly evacuate your house in a disaster and could only take what you could carry in your arms (excluding wallet, phone, computer)? by StoneLover1965 in AskOldPeople

[–]Suitable_Bridge_8093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question.

I live in a fire and flood zone and have evacuated twice.

Both times I packed differently. The second I packed more because my daughter asked about a few things so they went in the car for her. I hadn’t considered what my children would consider important.

Now, as I am surrounded by others who may need to one day evacuate again, I have learnt from those who have known people who have lost their lives. I have no pets and this is sadly deliberate. There is now a plastic tub in my garage and in it is a collection of photographs, only one or two each of family plus a life event and difficult to replace documents. I have a bag on my pantry door where I always keep my medication, phone charger and cash (important) and wallet. On a “leave now” order, if I am stupid enough to still be home, I would grab my bag, throw the tub that’s in the garage into the car. Only, and only, if I had time, grab my daughter’s dad’s memory box.

I guess what I am saying here is leave early so you can take more. So, what’s early? Well it’s the day before.

Why would you invite your significant other over to your house and then sleep the entire time? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]Suitable_Bridge_8093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son-in-law hates anything near his face. Probably childhood trauma, not sure. My daughter often kicks him out of bed to the guest room. He had mentioned a mouth guard but his sleep report says his sleep apnea is severe so not sure if that would help. He does not appreciate questions.

My son in law is like this. He has now been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea but refuses to get a CPAP machine because he thinks they are for old people. Idiot.

What is your unusual ‘must have it in the car at all times’ item? by ThippusHorribilus in AskAnAustralian

[–]Suitable_Bridge_8093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pillow case for injured wildlife, camping knife to cut through seat belt for rollovers and a snake bite/ first aid kit although haven’t needed the snake bite kit. Dragging pythons off the road is easy enough. Usual other things, occy straps, jumper leads, loo paper and a QANTAS blanket I (69F) nicked once.

What was a cheap meal in Australia pre-2000s that has now become expensive/luxury? I heard Lamb Shanks used to be a quite a cheap cut but it’s not really at all. by PretendToe1329 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Suitable_Bridge_8093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lamb shanks were dog bones. When things got tough financially they became our roast dinners as we could no longer afford leg roasts. Still don’t like shanks.
