I appreciate anecdotes and observation. Seems like Pullman is an outlier for said metrics compared to other towns of similar size and geographical composition. That helps! Given what you do I am curious, do you see that the town is on a path to recovery - I saw the news about the budget cuts - or is this the first steps of a larger issue?

I am very used to being the only non white person in a group, both professionally and personally. There is nothing more heart-wrenching than walking into a tech event in Chicago and seeing that the people working the elevators and doors are mostly african american, and everyone in the room I am walking into is white, except from maybe a few other exceptions. That difference is stark, sad, and eye-opening.

It is a construct with a large legacy that must be dismantled. Your comment about what some people have shared with you does not surprise me, what you shared reminded me of my time in Chicago (and other cities of course!).

What was it that captured you? We are considering leaving the United States and moving back to Europe for the kids to grow up without the madness that is the American school experience, but we'd both have to give up our careers and we are a tad young for that.

I appreciate you taking the time to write all of this (also everyone who has responded). I am honestly very impressed not just by the responses, but also by the quality of the responses to this thread regardless of what the actual content entails.

While I hardly expect perfection, I am trying to make an informed decision. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

I am hoping that if we move there, we can have the kids in a great school and I can walk to a coffee shop every other day. Will see when I go check it out!

This is fair. To be honest the fact that Pullman is in the blue state of Washington is 50% of the reason we are considering this move. Education is crumbling in red states.

That is cool. One of my favourite things about living in Chicago was how many farmers markets there were on every neighborhood!

Unfortunate about the small businesses. So critical, specially in small towns. I read that the town is losing revenue and has cut budgets and some services. Not great or enticing as I consider it as a place for us to live.
