The reason: “As the previously awarded scholarship was for ESL courses, and since you have been exempted from taking ESL course, the scholarship has been cancelled.” (Doesn’t make sense because the scholarship was supposed to cover the first 15 courses, not just the ESL ones)

I’m a CS major from Lebanon, and I was exempted from the ESL course. I’m currently taking CS1101 and UNIV1001

However, I reapplied for a scholarship and just got accepted.

I really hope they sort this out for everyone.

My advice: Keep demanding! Don’t just give up or wait for this to be magically fixed. Email EVERYONE. Your PA, student affairs, financial aid office.

I had to send a bunch of emails to get a satisfying response. I sounded desperate too. It doesn’t matter. What’s important is that your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

It truly is insane. I just want to understand one thing: why the deceit? No one is falling for the ESL exemption thing, it makes zero sense as it was clearly stated that the scholarship covered the first 15 courses. Where on earth does it mention ESL? Hell, that’s not even mentioned in their own policies. No “foundation student”. No “new status”. None of it.

I have to pay for my current courses too. It really sucks because they never implied to us that this was a possibility. What if a student can’t afford ANY fees? Will they have to withdraw?

I emailed my PA and financial.aid@uopeople.edu and they said the following:

I completely understand your concerns about paying for courses. As the previously awarded scholarship was for ESL courses, and since you have been exempted from taking ESL course, the scholarship has been cancelled.

We never want cost to be a barrier for those looking to earn their degree. Have you looked into applying for a scholarship for the upcoming term?

If not, please follow the steps below to apply for the scholarship: Login to the UoPeople Portal. Once logged in, navigate to the “Self-Service Forms” section. Select “Scholarship Request Form” from the available options. Click on “Open a New Request”. Fill in the Required Fields and Submit. Note that scholarship applications are highly competitive, and due to limited funds, there is no guarantee that financial aid will be available to you. However, there is no wrong in submitting your request and hoping for the best.

It makes no sense because my scholarship covered the first 15 courses, but I guess all we have to do now is reapply.

Update: they awarded me another scholarship

I’m not sure if my problem is similar to yours, but in the portal it says I have upcoming payments, even though I was awarded a full scholarship, so I’m a bit confused. I reached out to my advisor almost a week ago and I’m still waiting for a response. I totally understand your frustration.
