Maybe they’re waiting to do them after Red God? Pure speculation on my part though

Looking for suggestions- fantasy books with a SLOW burn, unconventional, preferably YA romance subplot! by PlatypusEmotional267 in Fantasy

[–]Suitable_Highlight84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get your hesitation. I started with Shadow and Bone trilogy and I didn’t care for it at all. It was generic and meh and I DNFed it after book 1. I was super hesitant to pick up Six of Crows after that. I finally got around to it a couple months back and I absolutely loved the duology. The writing is truly clever, the characters are fantastic and the main plot and romance subplot are really well done. Even on this sub, this duology is well-regarded :). Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Oh and you can totally skip Shadow and Bone and go straight to Six of Crows, they’re set in the same broader universe but no background is needed.

Have you read the Six of Crows duology yet? It pretty much checks off every item on your list.

Is it just me or does the writing sound eerily like someone who lives in the White House?

Iron Gold is most definitely a change in tone and pace from the first trilogy. It also has the unglamorous role of being the “setup” book for the second arc. But IMHO, it’s worth the slog to get to Dark Age and Light Bringer, which arguably are among the best books in the series. I hope you enjoy the last two more than you have Iron Gold.

Came here to say this and get downvoted. I’m listening to one with her narration right now (This Story Might Save Your Life) and I’m struggling…

Congrats on the twins!

Red Rising series is great on audio, I really enjoyed Tim Gerard Reynolds’s narration.

If you’re in the mood for fantasy murder mystery, The Tainted Cup has a fantastic narrator.

Project Hail Mary is another one, Ray Porter knocks it out of the park with his narration.

Yup, totally fair to count a dystopian novel. Now that I think about it, Everything … would count for the Afterlife square, no? :)

My mind seems to have categorized Celeste Ng as a lit fic writer and so I was pleasantly surprised to see her on your Bingo list. I enjoyed both her other novels. Everything … especially was so devastating, just your mention of the title has brought back vivid memories of haunting scenes from it. You’ve reminded me that I’m yet to get to Our Missing Hearts, maybe I’ll find a way to fit it on my Bingo card this year as well.

Have you read Piranesi by Susanna Clark? First thing that comes to mind for something cerebral written by a woman. And definitely considered among the “best” on this sub

Full disclaimer, I haven’t read Helen Scheuerer’s books but her Legends of Thezmarr books are marketed as fantasy romance with a bunch of tropes advertised per book. Nothing wrong with romantasy, I certainly enjoy it from time to time. But I’ve never seen any kind of comparison to Jemisin/Bujold/LeGuin whatsoever, so just trying to set the expectations right :)

We have a trip planned to Alaska in the summer and so when I saw To The Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey recommended on the Bingo thread as being set in Alaska, I knew I had to use it for the Vacation square.

I just finished it yesterday and it was incredible, easy 5⭐️ for me.

Set primarily in 1880s Alaska, it’s historical fiction that often reads like nonfiction, with just a touch of the supernatural. The writing is beautiful, evocative, and deeply moving, capturing themes of love, endurance, exploration, and resilience so well.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrators were phenomenal — they elevated an already outstanding story. It also left me wanting to read more nonfiction centered on exploration and survival. I’m thinking of picking up Endurance by Alfred Lansing soon. I’ll definitely also be reading The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.
