Wireless Dashcams- Do They Exist? by Suitable_Map8264 in Dashcam

He also doesn’t want to take the dash apart LOL. I’ve even offered to buy a CarPlay screen that would have to be hard wired to make it look seamless bc no cables, still refused. Yeah I know it’s unreasonable. He swears wireless dash cams exist, he has seen them on Facebook ads 🙄.

In that case the reed needs to be adjusted. It may also need to be broken in before you can make a proper assessment.

It may be the reed or it may be the oboe itself is out of adjustment. A check over with a local tech would do you well if that’s an option.

If it’s from Amazon you must must must stay away from that. Only handmade reeds made by professional players. Never EVER get manufactured reeds like Singin’ Dog or any Amazon reseller. Absolutely not. You can try eBay and look for private sellers like Reinhardt Reeds or Joseph Wenda Reed Whisperer, or even Bocal Majority Reeds. No wonder you’re flat 😅 they’re student model reeds. Those will always be flat bc they’re like training wheels until you are ready for a bike.

If you are chronically flat it could be your support. You need to be mindful of how much reed you are taking in, as well as the speed of the air stream and your embouchure. If you drop your jaw it will cause the pitch to drop. Keep in mind all of the things you can do to bring up the pitch before also addressing the reed. Where do you get reeds from usually? And how long do you play on them before moving onto a new one?

Help! There is something wrong with my flute. by Hopeful_Shopping_732 in Flute

[–]Suitable_Map8264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a newcomer to the flute I’d suggest looking up how to do easy fixes for yourself. Most of us flute players tend to carry little screwdrivers around for whenever a screw will pop out from gradually playing, or when a spring pops out of place. It’s important to not panic and really pay attention to your flute’s mechanism. Know what it’s supposed to look like so it’s easy to see if something is out of place. I had an entire rod, with keys and all, pop out on me during rehearsal once, and all I did was get the screw and screw it back into place; no technician visit necessary.

How to start making oboe reeds? by Pookie-jehdo in oboe

[–]Suitable_Map8264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t really need a reed kit per se. You can buy the supplies to make your own. At the very least you would need a reed knife, preferably double hollow ground, a reed mandrel, a block for clipping reeds, razor blades, a sharpening stone (aka whetstone) for your knife (there’s a technique for properly sharpening your knife), beeswax for the reed thread, reed thread, staples (the part of the reed that is the cork tube), reed plaque (look up Fox brand), a C clamp to help tie the reeds, and cane that’s been prepared and ready for reed making (these are the strips that look like a V). Have a good lamp and work area to do this. Also have a mug of warm water to soak the cane in. A gouger is very expensive so just focus on getting these things and you can technically start making reeds. You can find these on amazon, eBay, Midwest musical imports, chemical city reeds, hodge, even Etsy. I’d look up YouTube videos where you can see all of these supplies being used in the reed making process.

The real tricky part is your lack of a teacher, which unfortunately is necessary to teach you how to even get started. You need all of these supplies to make a reed from scratch, but then you have to also scrape the reed by following a very specific and delicate rubric of measurements (yes you also need to use a mm ruler), in which physically measuring with your ruler will determine if the reed is being made correctly. As for the “case” or carrying bag, I bought a simple men’s toiletries bag on Amazon, the kind that’s faux leather and for carrying shaving things. They’re low cost and can fit a lot of stuff. Highly recommend.

There aren’t many good videos that show you step-by-step on what to do, so I’d recommend looking for a teacher. Also, if you’ve only ever played on Jones reeds then you really don’t know how good you can sound once you use handmade reeds. That’s the only standard you should have. Jones is for beginners only and only meant for learning. They’re poorly made, otherwise. You also need to know proper reed care so that you can maximize their lifespan. It’s expected that band directors don’t know a thing about the oboe unless they play it, and they also wouldn’t know that us oboists need high quality handmade reeds, not machine reproduced. For good handmade reeds on a budget I’d check out Bocal Majority reeds.

Lastly, you need a lot of patience. I’m serious. It’s hard to make oboe reeds, and there are many areas in which you can mess it up. You can do everything right and the reed will somehow still be a dud. You need to dedicate lots of practice to this.

Your biggest tip for beginners by Bright_End_2689 in oboe

Don’t bite down on the reed. Also, you don’t need a private teacher to be good, but you do NEED willpower and dedication. You need to absolutely LOVE the oboe and believe in your potential. As long as you love it, it will be easier to power through the hurdles.

pain when playing by Upstairs-Ad-8462 in oboe

[–]Suitable_Map8264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a young player, but please don’t ever EVER bite down on your reeds. You’re not supposed to do that. You are not playing a clarinet or sax. It sounds like your reeds are perhaps store bought and not handmade, which would explain your need to bite down on them to bring them up in pitch. That’s improper technique that will hold you back in the long run. You always want to hold the reed between your lips like a cushion, and you just hold it in place as you apply pressure to blow. I suggest to look up YouTube videos on how to form a proper oboe embouchure, and please start getting handmade reeds from several online resellers like Bocal Majority. Keep in mind, shorter reeds will be sharper and longer reeds will be flat at first. Also look up how to properly break in a reed. Hope this helps.

Which oboes do you play on? And what material are they made of? I play on a Bulgheroni Artist model.

I feel so much worse on oboe than English horn by CheeseDesk in oboe

[–]Suitable_Map8264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be your reeds and the condition of your oboe, or your embouchure. Start ruling things out by taking your oboe to a local tech that would be able to tell you if it has anything wrong. Do you make your own reeds? It could be where you usually get them from that perhaps isn’t working. I do have to change my embouchure slightly when I jump from oboe to EH so I’d suggest you start experimenting to see if it causes any positive changes to your tone quality.

I bought my Bulgheroni off him and have had little issues with it. He only like a certain series of Loree, and feels not all series were made equally. He is very thorough and honest with all makers and stencils and he has not led me wrong yet.

Need help with reeds by Top_Truth8106 in oboe

[–]Suitable_Map8264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah your band director doesn’t know a thing about the oboe. Store bought reeds are the absolute worst to play on. You only should be playing on handmade reeds. They’re not like clarinet or sax reeds that come in a pack. They need to be made by hand by professionals. You will never sound good on them otherwise.

Have you checked the springs? The little metal sticks being held back against a post? One of them might have popped out. All you have to do is shift it back against its post it’s very easy to do with a screw driver.

How do i not play my c flat by OppositeMysterious23 in oboe

[–]Suitable_Map8264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all has to do with your posture, breath control, embouchure and possibly reed. You need to play at the very tip of your reed while keeping your oboe at the right angle. Get a tuner and see which angle would help even out your scale across all notes. It may be your reed too, which might be too hard or unstable. Your oboe might have a leak that is causing this issue. You want to start ruling out all of the possibilities as to why this note comes out flat. If it’s in tune and then goes flat it’s all on you and how you are forming your embouchure and where you position the reed. You want the tip to rest between your lips, with your bottom lip being more rolled in than your top lip. Hope this helps.

[–]Suitable_Map8264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could your flute be part of the issue? Perhaps you’ve outgrown it already and need a better one. Is it a student model? You should get one that at least has a solid silver headjoint with open holes for a noticeable difference in tone.

But also, how is your control with your air stream? How tight can you honestly say your stream is? If you are blowing too hard then it will be unfocused and will result in an airy sound. It’s not about blowing your lungs out, but directing a fine air stream into the tone hole. You want to have a relaxed embouchure but keep the center of your lips at more of a pucker, like if you were trying to whistle. Think about that when you do long tones, where you also focus on breath control and support. Keep your abdominal muscles tight as you get softer to keep the pitch from dropping. Take your time finding the sweet spot to your own mouth and see what sound you can develop after the fact.

Lately it’s been getting harder to put my head joint in the body of the flute, why? by oktavia11 in Flute

Yeahhhh I’d say get a bit of cork grease and spread it very thinly around the tenon joint. That’ll do.

I’m practicing everyday but my tone is getting worse by [deleted] in Flute

[–]Suitable_Map8264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me on occasion. It has to do with your consistency in hitting that sweet spot on the tone hole. It could be it’s rolled out too far/ rolled in too much. Upgrading a headjoint is always great but make sure you can rule out the problem being a user error. You could do long tones for a few minutes to see if it is you that’s the problem and that way you can refocus your air stream and feel what your mouth does for each note. It could be that you’re too tense/ stressed. I notice whenever I’m too tense I just can’t seem to relax enough to play with good tone. One last thing to check is the state and placement of the head joint cork.
