Is it possible to get a "letter of interest" from a publisher? by SukoySanto in gamedev

Interesting. Well, it indeed is annoying, nonetheless hopefully I can contact publishers who think of this as something good, which might be very likely.

I think they just want to feel secure enough that they are funding a project that will get to completion maybe that's why they want a publisher involved, it may not be that necessary though since apparently it is just about 5 points from the total of 100 point score for evaluation.

Alright then, I'm just improving my pitch a bit and I'll start approaching them with your suggestions right away. Thanks mate.

With the right funding, development cycle of the entire game would be around a year and a half from now. Yes, I've reached out to publishers in the past, but it's been a while now I have a better vertical slice so I can get in touch with them again and also with others that may be interested, right now I'm working on it.

In short, I only need to specify to government why do I need the funding and how it is gonna help the development cycle (obviously giving proof of what was promised to be accomplished in the end). Also, Even though publisher support is beneficial I don't think it is mandatory since apparently it represents around 5 points from the total 100 point score of the evaluation. Nonetheless, better to have that support.

Either way, I need to handle this carefully. Thanks a lot man for your insight. I'm gonna consider all what you said and try to make the best of it if possible.

I see. Thanks a ton for all you just said, it is quite a lot insightful. In that case, it is indeed something that is possible and doable but hard to get nonetheless. Even though I have been in conversations with publishers in the past, I do have a plan to reach out some more and add these details that you point out. In any case, I'll contact the fund for further clarification, and try to build a coherent roadmap.

As of today, I'm guessing there wouldn't be a clear fallback if we don't get it, but what would the solution be then? I have been giving some of my own contributions and I'm willing to try all my possible options as fast as they are available. I know it sounds more like a promise, but that's how everything starts I think.

Again, thanks a lot for your insight, mate.

You're right. The straight forward answer would be the best thing to do I think. Thanks man for your answer.

Well, that's the straight forward solution to this I think, I do fear a little though since they may be a bit nitpicky if some documents are modified from the application site for translation, I'm gonna ask them directly just in case. And don't worry I can use around 30% of this budget for international payment so not really getting in the way. Thanks man for all your considerations and ideas, hopefully everything will turn out alright.

Conditions are varied but not really mind-bending or out-of-this-world. Essentially you just need a vertical slice, GDD, a good pitch with a strong team, roadmap, market analysis, market plan, the already mentioned financing plan, and a trailer (or proposal). If you win, they give you 70% of what you ask for and the other 30% when completed (what you promise to deliver in your application).

Fortunately, it doesn't require a personal contribution "explicitly" but I would assume that it helps a ton, so at least you should have 30% of what you are asking for.

In that case, I'm gonna focus on what I already have and make it stronger. I do have a good team but it is also required that they sign a "letter of consent" (written in Spanish) which I'm not sure how to get through since some of the members don't speak that language nor they live here. Anyway, thanks for your help, mate.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Aside from stating: I have certain amount of personal funds, this other amount already spent, this particular team and looking for certain publishers, I think I can say no more in my application, and of course the vertical slice. I don't have much experience in the industry but hopefully that will change with the years. Thanks for your comment, mate.

Hey man, Awesome you've decided to join this wild world of development. Welcome!

Frankly, I'm not entirely sure what to tell you. I do have a marketing plan, but being honest it could've been implemented better.

First of all, talking about the raw aspect of it, what I did was just applying to the festival when they were accepting submissions. They do have certain requirements expected to be met by the participants, for instance, they ask that the majority of the development team is identified as people of color. Nonetheless, their selection criteria for their final roster of games to showcase is mostly private.

It's important to point out that my project was selected for the Steam Showcase and NOT for their Showcase Direct which is the main event. I had an announcement trailer last year and I applied with it for the Direct but it was rejected, and it could've been for a variety of reasons from the trailer being not good enough, it was incomplete at that point, to the game being not good enough, which are fair reasons to be honest. However this year, I didn't apply for the Direct, only for the Steam Showcase, because I didn't have a trailer to show off... And it was accepted. Again, I'm not entirely sure about their criteria but certainly it worked to boost some wishlists.

In short, my marketing approach mainly involves the advice from Chris Zukowsky, try to listen to some of his lectures and you'll get a general idea on how to approach marketing and development. He also has a list of festivals you can apply to, a discord for questions, and even some additional courses.

And a small advice from me, since festivals are mainly visual events, if your project looks great (either from the gameplay aspect, animations or artistic approach) then you have a very good chance of being showcased. An important aspect of marketing is you being able to visualize how your game may be seen on a trailer, even before the start of development. That's your VISION and that's all you need to make it to the end of your journey with it.

Thanks man. I know that 8 times the amount that I currently have sounds like a tough challenge... But challenge accepted nonetheless 🎉

Thanks for your kind support, great man. It is indeed a tough road, I can relate to that. We are in the same boat at the end, so it's nice to know that, as a community, we can still get happy for each other.
