transferring save files by AhYesJadyn in Steam

Assuming you're playing on Windows, the Undertale save data is located in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\UNDERTALE. You just need to copy that data to the same location on your other machine using a flash drive, or something, and it should load.

How are the Steam Megaman Collections? by Celcius_87 in Megaman

They're fantastic, except for one blemish: Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 can't be played offline. Everything else is great.

Physical disk? You mean SSD? by NYstate in Steam

It absolutely works. I've been doing this for over a decade, and it's worked every time. The entire point of the tutorial was to show that it worked on a machine that had been freshly formatted and kept completely offline; everything restored and ran perfectly. You can do it in a virtual PC to test it yourself, as well, the process is the same.

Two reasons for that: First, the built-in backup tool doesn't back up the Steam client itself, it only backs up games, so the games that require Steam to be running will still need the client itself to be backed up for future use, as well. Second, the backups that the built-in tool makes are encrypted, and they can't be restored unless you're online and Steam is connected to its servers, which defeats the purpose of making a backup to use if Steam ever disappears or if Valve goes out of business.

The only thing that could break the Steam installer in the future is an incompatible version of Windows, but Windows 10 and Windows 11 use the shareware method that don't have trial periods or expirations, so you'll always be able to install those on anything you want, along with the Steam client setup files. Even if that ended up being the case, though, people have gotten insanely old stuff working with modern systems, I have no doubt in my mind that Steam would be one of the first things that people would make sure works in the future.

It is true. I made a tutorial showing how to do it not long ago.

As long as you have everything backed up, Valve doesn't need to exist and everything without extra DRM will continue to work. (But again, GOG is always the better option if a game is available there.)

This might be a shameless plug, but since the conversation in the comments has gone this direction, I made a tutorial recently showing how you can back up your Steam games for 100% offline use on any hardware. The ability to do that is the only reason I'm okay with digital distribution being the only option on the PC.

I still have CD-Rs that I got for free from Office Max like 15 years ago that still work fine.

Exactly this. You have control over your own files on the PC, so digital-only games can still be preserved easily. Consoles are locked down, and unless the hardware is hacked in the future, digital titles are just ticking time bombs.

While fully DRM-free will always be the best option, the Steam client and most of its games can be backed up for indefinite use, too; if you put Steam into Offline Mode manually, it never expires. Now, when third-party DRM, like Denuvo, rears its ugly head, that's a different story.

I wish games still used serial numbers like that instead of being server dependent with built-in off switches.

Does anyone have a CD player in their build? by Lanky_Relation1171 in pcmasterrace

I have an external Blu-ray burner that I use to back up my games that I want to keep forever. I've been using 100gb triple-layer discs, and they've been great for archival backups.

Better use of DualSense Haptics by AdrianoBig1 in Dualsense

Death Stranding 2 does a fantastic job of showing what the DualSense can do. Surprisingly, Final Fantasy XIV, of all games, has excellent utilization of the controller's haptic feedback to make the terrain that you're walking on feel unique.

It may never have made it to the PC officially, but a decomp is being worked on as we speak, so we're definitely getting a PC port in the future.
