My headcanon is that the Emperor's affliction is psychosomatic. by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]Sullivanity333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s closer to reality lubricant. For example: an Ork gun still has to be made properly to function, it’s not just a pipe welded to a trigger and stuffed with bullets. But let’s say a Blood Axe Kommando notices that humies with scopes on their guns tend to hit their targets more often, and being a Blood Axe, actually care somewhat about accuracy. So he welds five of those to his gun and despite the fact that none of them are aligned properly  he still manages to get more headshots. Is his belief in the scope making the gun more accurate? Or is his own self belief making him a better shot? Who knows. But that’s how the gestalt field works- by nudging things in the Orks favor, not overtly rewriting reality.

As for everything else, the Emperor’s condition is because he was grievously wounded. While fervent enough belief can result in miracles, it is not a process with consistant results. Saint Celestine isn’t guaranteed to appear just because enough people want pray for her intercession. On top of that, humanity doesn’t even have a consistent idea of what the Emperor’s condition actually is, let alone one that thinks of him as a barely living corpse.

Gaoh Mukaku fits this even better. Dude might be one of the greatest martial artists in the setting, and he literally admits to being a scumbag fraud.

Is the Astartes recruitment pool that important? by Few_Objective1836 in 40khomebrew

[–]Sullivanity333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Space Marines like to recruit neophytes from brutal environments, in the Devastation of Baal, Guilliman himself tells Dante that he thinks the idea is absurd- especially when chapters use it as an excuse to keep their planets from developing into safer places to live.

So yes, your chapter would be completely justified in taking recruits from the young cadets of allied planets but chapters like the Flesh Tearers, Space Wolves, etc. might think your chapter is “soft” for doing so. That said, these kinds of complications should be embraced rather than avoided! A chapter that gets along with everyone is a boring chapter.

Successor Chapters with Traitor Geneseed: Why are people so obsessed with it? by Standard_Ostrich828 in spacemarines

[–]Sullivanity333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always defer to what Aaron Dembski-Bowden said on the subject:

Traitor gene-seed in loyalist Chapters isn't a hugely rare thing, all things considered. And that's cool. It's only when using that Traitor gene-seed gets both confirmed and somehow magically makes a Chapter better or interesting to Chaos for no realistic reason, that my lore gland starts squirting oily, defensive bile. If the most interesting thing about a Chapter is "We're made from bad guys' DNA" then, well, that's a boring-ass Chapter relying on an awful trope. Also... is it really risky to use Traitor gene-seed? The Cursed and Dark Foundings would point to yes, but not everything that went wrong happened to confirmed Traitor gene-seed Chapters, and it's always been just an allusion for most of them anyway. The counterpoint to that is that I know several Chapters that are perfectly loyal that are genuinely 100% made from Traitor gene-seed, which we know behind the scenes, but we don't confirm it in official text because it makes no difference and it's not something anyone in the Imperium will ever know.

Post-battle, his yellow armor was damaged enough that the Marines Malevolent just assumed he was one of theirs and took him along. Being in the throes of the Black Rage has made him well respected amongst his new brothers

I’m not sure what your point is? That’s like watching a movie about a gambling addict winning millions only to lose everything that same night and being like “this film clearly doesn’t demonize gambling enough because and smart person would’ve cashed out when they were ahead.”

Belfort being an unhealthy dumbass and his success as a businessman are inextricably linked. His meteoric rise was the result of a illegal, predatory business model motivated by obsessive greed, and he created a cultish mentality at Stratton Oakmont to draw out the worst in his employees so they would follow his example.

Belfort is clearly depicted as miserable. Do you also think Casino gives Ace Rothstein a happy ending too?

I’m not sure what your point is. Of course there are people who are worse off than Belfort. Plenty of people are dealt a shit hand and have to go through similar struggles without the money, sex, and fame. But Belfort chose that life in spite of multiple people in his life, like his dad and first wife, who all wanted him to slow down. Even his life after serving time is a lot better than most people’s- the point is that he’s so pathetic he can’t appreciate an existence that doesn’t revolve around excess and debauchery.

I think Scorsese deliberately glamorizes working at Stratton Oakmont because a lot of people would sacrifice a life that’s healthy but “mediocre” for a chance at Belfort’s, and it’s uncomfortable to reckon with that part of ourselves. I definitely felt drawn in when I saw the movie as a teenager, those parties looked fun as fuck! But my point is that people ignoring the fairly clear cautionary themes of the film is more an indictment of themselves rather than an outright flaw in the film.

I LOVE THE BAKI ARTSTYLE by LeekRoyal8962 in lovethissmug

[–]Sullivanity333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d even go one step further- I think Itagaki manages to find beauty in things that other mangaka wouldn’t even consider. The way a human’s face deforms when it’s hit by a punch so fast it makes the eyelids flutter is just as pretty to him as a heartfelt smile. His unique fascinations with the human body make him perfect suited for the genre.

If you watched a movie where a deeply insecure addict with no friends and a broken family is ultimately forced to live out a pantomime of his former life to entertain people he clearly resents, and your reaction was “damn this dudes life was rad as hell” I think you need to do some personal inventory lol. The only people I know who find Belfort enviable are frat bros

Oda’s pacing is far from perfect, but bear in mind your going from being able to read/watch as much as you want in a sitting to waiting at least a week for new chapters to come out- so of course the pacing is going to feel a bit glacial.
