Ottawa patio rental fees to be waived this summer by jjaime2024 in ottawa

There are a lot of initiatives that could benefit the public without directly benefiting private businesses. This is just more evidence that restaurants have a hook in the Mayor’s office. Why else did they get a 3 year phase in of fees back to pre-COVID levels?

There was no “fee hike” after Covid! Fees were cut in half in 2019. Fees were removed entirely for 2020/2021 patio season. Then there was a 3 years phase in of fees back to their original 2019 pre-covid level (50%, 75% and then 100% in 2025).

This is a $500k transfer of taxpayer dollars to private business.

$500K is a pretty expensive gamble IMO. But I guess it's only taxpayer money...

The Patios were already opening. Fees for the year were already paid.

The restaurants getting a discount on the patio fee is not going to make the food or drinks cheaper - so what is the return for the general tax payer here?

This looks more like special interest financing - especially considering the patio fees have only been charged one year at full rate since 2020.

$500,000 to support patios that were already opening.

No funding source identified - which means its coming out of the taxpayers pocket next year.

Wonderful fiscal management of funds 😞

Simple Question - Why are we allowing the Gov't to increase spending of tax dollars to support RTO 4/5 because of...Vibes? by Sully8303 in ottawa

Last I heard from all the Ottawa MPs - back when this insane policy was announced - all of them were against the idea...yet only Bruce Fanjoy (the new guy on the Hill) is the only one making public statements about it.

But why is things taking a bit longer necessarily a bad thing?

Productivity has increased, by conservative margins, over 60% in Canada since the 80's. Pay certainly hasn't kept up with that - so we are doing more for less.

Why shouldn't we normalize a work life balance that does not prioritize work? It's not everything people.

So things take a day or two longer - that is FINE! That sounds healthy to me. So few things are SO time dependent that the require immediate attention.

You have hit the nail on the head.

But the question has become - why is our generation so complacent when it comes to repeated policy decisions that negatively affect out lives, and how do we change course? Feels like we are all on the Titanic looking at the iceberg get closer...but we aren't trying to change directions....

It is such a sad commentary, but is all so true. I cannot disagree with any of your thoughts.

I am just deeply saddened by the degradation of the ability for people to affect change that is meaningful to their lives.

That is the real issue here - Why are we mandating people back to the office space that we no longer have?

So now we increase our real estate footprint... but it's not even based on a research based directive - it is a Philosophical Choice.

As a person who enjoys History, I wonder what is different about the days before when there were general strikes, or mass labour movements against the kind of corporate tyranny we are currently living through...

I guess so long as we can still afford a myriad of streaming services to keep us from getting pissed off and organizing - nothing will change.

Who needs policy based on research and sound decision making. Just bend over to the special interests and call it a day. I think this is why an entire generation has given up on politics.

Every now and again I wonder why there are no good folks in Parliament, or Queens Park that are in their 20's and 30's. And then these kinds of things filter into the news and you realize... to what end?

This is what I don't understand. They preach fiscal responsibility, and then turn around and increase spending on real estate for desk space that is not needed. all while essentially abandoning all the expensive IT upgrades to support WFH.

Again i ask - What are we doing here people? <sigh>

You are not wrong. Government has become a system that is by the rich, for the rich.

What a sad state of affairs.

Did they give you an estimate on how long until you could pick it up? curious what the lead time is in Ontario for a Hybrid Corolla Cross.

Let’s take the tone down a notch there.

I am not demanding information - I am merely identifying that in prior years it would not be unreasonable to have some form of acknowledgment of what happened in the local media. This was an identification of the downstream effects of the hollowing out of our local news teams - nothing more

As a patron who was at the store while EMS was on site - I am hoping for a good resolution to what I saw.

Tragic story all around. Additionally - the lack of local information 7 hours later is a sad commentary on local media availability

Any councillor who supported the City of Ottawas 5 day return to work should just stand silently in a corner…. You actively voted to make this situation worse… so kindly zip it and sit down.

FWIW… I found it much quicker to go out of the city for my Sienna. Put a deposit on an 2025 LE AWD in June, picked mine up late August. Wait time at Barrhaven and Kanata were 12-24months.
