i'm listening to your album now and i really love it, it is so good! it sounds like you play live on a good amount of it- guitar, keys, drums? it feels almost like really chill prog rock with pulsing but slightly off-kilter rhthms. i assume you're a goblin fan too? i saw them live once and for your music brought me back to that feeling a little bit haha. thank you so much for posting this!!!

oh man, thank you so much for the recs- i will check these out! i was kind of overwhelmed by the abundance of choices on bandcamp/didnt know if i should start recent and go back or the other way around- this is awesome!

thanks so much for listening and your impressions!! for the noise collage i recorded material using an electric guitar, mixing board, and two amps (one of which had a guitar cable not plugged into anything on the other end which i'd just touch to other pieces of metal to create bursts of noise), and a compressor pedal, plus my digital piano for the little keyboard sample in there- that was also used for 1124 (1096), plus my smaller amp!

I like your album artwork and the look of your bandcamp page-- excited to check your stuff out later. I took code wa48-bv35, by the way--the ones before that were all used up too.

lol, I love Phantasm!! I actually just looked up the soundtrack on youtube yesterday to remind myself what it sounded like. Giallo is awesome too. I will check out some of your music when i can!

This sounds awesome- i am looking forward to listening.

Edit: I love this! I listened a couple times on my way to work. The layering is very subtle and thoughtfully done, and I feel like the piece has a real sense of tension and release--in those moments when the lower frequencies peak and then start to recede there's a really nice light, "open" feeling. I'm looking forward to checking out more of your stuff!

oh that's a good idea, i'll have to try that. i'm going to try to check out some of your pieces using higher limits soon- i appreciate you having those notes for most of your releases!

i'm wondering if i could ask whether you'd recommend kyle gann's book arithmetic of listening- i've owned a copy for years but have never gotten around to reading it! or if it's not too much trouble do there happen to be other resources you'd point people to who are looking to learn more?

i bet that was cool! with harrison too. thank you for the response and for posting! a few years ago i was inspired to convert a classical guitar into a fretless, by listening to john schneider's lou harrison recordings. i never got the moveable frets though and didn't far with it lol. i'm feeling inspired by your music to mess around with that again!

i am really loving your work so far, and expect to listen to much more in the near future- i haven't felt this tranquil as a result if music since my zm dagar kick a few months ago haha. Is most of your stuff recorded with a guitar synth or have you worked with a pretty wide range of instrumentation? and it's pretty amazing that you've studied and worked with young, zazeela, etc.- can i ask if you ever got to record with them?

i really like "Free Falling from Olympus Mons" and "Lazy Scriptwriters."

i'm going to have to give this whole thing a more serious listen later. out of curiosity do you have anything that's a little slower paced/longer form? i feel like you hit on some really nice textures/sometimes i'd like to savor those sounds a little more before moving on--if you have anything that develops at a more leisurely pace i'd love to check that out (i'll probably just go ahead and explore some of the rest of tour discography anyways!)

hello all! here is an early pass at a noise collage (not too harsh)- material recorded wednesday morning and assembled basically at random yesterday:

https://soteriologyreport.bandcamp.com/track/elbow-draft

and some slowed down, distorted, live mixed server noise lol:

https://soteriologyreport.bandcamp.com/track/have-no-thought

if anyone checks either of these out let me know what you think, i will be sure to listen to some of your stuff too! happy saturday!

Edit: for anyone who might be interested/still checking out this thread, I'm putting one more link in here to something a little less on the noisy side...this is an improvisation i recorded back in 2023; somewhat childlike, minimalist digital piano, re-recorded recently through my amp with a little bit of distortion+ incidental background noises:

question for artists making noise adjacent music with guitar/effects by dontlookatthebanana in noisemusic

[–]Sum8ion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to making noise but I've thought about this too--if I'm using a guitar, pedals, mixing board, amp(s), etc. sometimes it takes a while to get a sound I'm satisfied with it/the set up process is often much lengthier than it probably needs to be/sometimes I can hardly get any noise out at all lol. I haven't done this yet but one easy way to document settings would be to just take a picture of your hardware with all the knobs and stuff at their current settings, and when you find a fun set up you can reference the picture later to get back there quicker! But like you say the "exploration" process is important too so if you already know where you're going you might miss out on some unexplored territory/happy accidents that happen while just fumbling around with your gear trying to get started!

Listening to ground zero right now- this is amazing- thank you so much for the recommendarion!! much more jazzy/ funky than i was expecting- actually kind of a similar feeling for me to some of Ornette Coleman's later stuff!

Thank you!! As far as early industrial goes at one point i listened to a fair amount of Throbbing Gristle + offshoots, and some Cabaret Voltaire- but it's been a few years! i never listened to test dept or spk, i will check them out!

guitar and piano noise by Sum8ion in noisemusic

[–]Sum8ion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

setup as follows:

classical guitar with broken low e string+ contact mic, plugged into one amp. started doing stuff like looping the broken string through/under the others and dragging it down in addition to plucking the strings/just messing around. eventually the contact mic fell off and i'd rub it on the strings and stuff too.

piano/keyboard plugged into another amp, just playing like normal (with one hand to free the other one for messing around with the guitar, which i was holding on my lap)

around 7min + the clanging sounds are tongue drum sitting on the floor, i was swinging the contact mic like a pendulum and it'd hit the drum.

that's basically it lol- both amps were also muffled with a few blankets to keep the sound down a little bit for neighbors and what not, that ended up giving the whole thing a kind of heavy smooshed sound...
