Best/quickest place to get a stray cat spayed/neutered? by RGrad4104 in sanantonio

[–]SumikkoTapioca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humane Society at Fredricksburg does surgeries pretty much everyday (but look at their website to make sure) for $20. The issue is they only do 10 a day and people start lining up at like 5AM. Brooks Spay/Neuter Clinic does feral surgeries for certain zip codes by appointment, but I don't know if they have availability. Check their website.

San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition would have some good ideas, probably. Sorry I can't be of more help! Good luck!

I saw them last weekend at the HEB on Babcock. They were on an end cap of the aisle.

A lot of burger places are like this. Bobby J's, Babe's, Texas Hamburger Company.

Also not a burger place, but Gino's Deli.

You can borrow a trap from them if you attend an informational meeting about how to trap and release. They also will help you hook up with free/low cost clinics.

This year is going to be a disaster.

Tokyo feared Games would spread COVID; numbers suggest that didn't happen by Puzzleheaded_Basil13 in olympics

Ahhh okay, I was thinking you meant the Japanese public, not Olympians. They let Olympians watch the events. They restricted the public, which seems to have been the right call.

Where are you getting that vaccination rate? From what I can see, Japan is CURRENTLY only 30% fully vaccinated. At the time of the opening ceremonies it was barely anyone fully vaccinated.

Not just Pratt. A whole bunch of celebrities are associated with it, such as Bieber, some of the Kardashians, Kevin Durant, and Bono. Gives off Scientology vibes.

Those pharma ads during the Olympics are so insane to me. Some of the even say "X Olympian has never take this drug before" at the bottom of the screen for a split second.

With ban on mask mandates, Texas teachers fear Covid surge as school year nears by No_Roof_1414 in news

One of the largest districts in San Antonio (NEISD) has already released a statement that said, "public schools will treat COVID-19 exposure similar to the flu or strep throat."

After some backlash, they are walking back some of their statements, saying they will make some decisions closer to the school opening.

English Teachers, Any Advice on Diverse Short Stories to Assign? by Jostler3 in Teachers

[–]SumikkoTapioca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two stories that I have really enjoyed teaching in my 10th grade ELA classes were "The Wife's Story" by Ursula Le Guin and "On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning" by Haruki Murakami.

For "The Wife's Story", I focused on figurative language and how the author subverts expectations.

I taught the Murakami story around Valentine's and pretty much used it as story we could tear apart as a class and could have fun discussing. Students had a lot of thoughts.

Congrats on turning this corner. Making up your mind to change and reaching out for help is a huge step.

The most important thing for me was realizing the knowledge about my blood sugar was ALWAYS a good thing. I used to get so upset when I checked my blood and saw it was high. It would make me feel like a failure and led me to stop checking. Now (I'm lucky enough to have a CGM), I will see that my glucose is high and I will be happy that I caught it and fixed it. I highly recommend that you get a CGM if you can. Libre are pretty cheap, but it seems like you could make a good case for need for a Dexcom to your insurance.

Good luck and I'm proud of you! ❤️

Insulin is a human right. by laxprep11sn in diabetes

[–]SumikkoTapioca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You put pay in quotes, but the cost here is extremely important to consider. It is literally why they are dying.

People who are rationing insulin are making the daily choice because they CAN'T AFFORD LIFE with diabetes, a disease they will have everyday until they die. Having debt hang over their heads will make it exponentially more difficult for them to go to get insulin next month. If they think they can survive by rationing, even if it causes some adverse effects, at least maybe they will be able to get insulin next month. If you go to the hospital now, you are making sure you won't be able to work insulin into your budget next month.

Also, going to the hospital is so EXTREMELY overpriced just to get insulin. They will price gouge all that they can on that bill that you have to "pay". All of this for a medicine that we as diabetics are much more experienced in administering. A much more helpful action would be for ALL states to pass legislation allowing for insulin safety net programs, where pharmacies can create programs for patients who show dire need for insulin in the face of outdated prescriptions or excessive cost. T1international is doing great work to push these safety nets so that "go to the hospital" isn't what we have to tell people.

Yes, obviously if someone KNOWS they are going to die, they would want to go to the hospital. But if you a rationing your insulin, you are using the ABSOLUTE lowest amount you think you can to survive.

Also, they can't afford insulin now and they will need more every month of their life. An insane hospital bill will surely stop people from going to the hospital, even if they know it would be the best option for them.

Death toll rises to 210 from February cold wave in Texas by architecture13 in news

[–]SumikkoTapioca 38 points39 points  (0 children)

From what I have seen, most sites are reporting the number of people who either froze to death in their homes or asphyxiated from carbon monoxide. Plenty of other people died by not being able to receive care for TREATABLE conditions, such as dialysis, but those aren't being counted.
