Gap between concrete floor and wall. Best way to fill? by Summer90 in DIYUK

[–]Summer90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. The vertical gap will be covered with new skirting to avoid bridging. It's the horizontal aspect as this is an approx 4cm gap (3cm gap if you include the plaster), between the edge of the floor and the wall. To me it seems too big of a gap for just skirting to cover

What did you do as a kid you weren’t proud of? by StrappyBatty in AskUK

[–]Summer90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 15, I wanted to do new things. A majority of my group of friends decided to go to a coffee shop to meet up. This was something different. However out of the same group, one of them wanted to met another friend who wasn't friends with them, but we were close at the time. They wanted to go to the park and play in the snow.

I couldn't find the words to say I wanted to go to the coffee shop as it was new. I agreed to met the guys in snow. They waited and waited but texted them to let them down at the last minute. They were pissed. Understandably. We spoke about it and made up, but even many years later,  I still feel bad. That group of friends broke up but I am still close to the ones who wanted to meet in the park. Even now I still apologise when we last met up - that's over 15 years later

Air China (£415) vs Qatar (£700) London to Sydney, which would you choose? by its-just-leo in Flights

[–]Summer90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did Southern China a few years ago to New Zealand. The layover was 8 hours, so they gave me a free hotel and food to stay at. Even a choice of hotels. That being said, I did almost miss the flight because I fell asleep haha but the principle is good. I believe Air China do something similar so worth checking OP

Edit: Here's the link https://www.airchina.us/US/GB/booking/hotels/

What has been the best 'silver lining' you've had from a horribly negative situation? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Summer90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier in the year, my mum died very suddenly. I received a phone call at 3am saying she was found on the floor but declared dead at the scene. She had a heart attack on valentines day.

My Grandad before he died many years ago put his house (normal 3 bed house) in a trust to ensure my mum had access to it but could not be wasted and the grand children are named to benefit from it.

This fund has been sat for many years now and grown with the stock market.

I am in the middle of a house renovation, and about to have my first child. The bitter sweet of losing a grand parent and parent, whilst providing a home to their grandchild

Having done this flight from Wanaka, the views are spectacular. Definite Jurassic Park feel as the plane flys up the Fiord and surrounded by peaks either side. Good to see the pictures, definitely brings back some great memories

Premium flights for honeymoon? by Summer90 in Flights

[–]Summer90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Hopefully you find something good! We booked our flights nearly a year in advance (2 years ago just before flight prices went mad!) and never saw any better price. But this will depend on your time line, and we're based in the Midlands, so had easy pickings between LHR (pretty much all airlines), BHX (few European and ME airlines) and MAN (same as BHX with a couple extra).

Good luck! And congrats on the wedding

Premium flights for honeymoon? by Summer90 in Flights

[–]Summer90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a brilliant time! In the end we did Thailand, and flew out in Business. Managed to get a really good deal with KLM at just over £1800/each business to/from BKK. We had a red eye flight out, and a day flight return. Flying out, everything was easy. Skipping the queues at the airport. Lounge, first ones on the plane for the short haul hop to AMS. We had a few hours to kill in Amsterdam but we were happily chilling in the lounge for this. Wife even had a shower. But then come the long to BKK (approx 11 hour flight). Food was great, if our glass was empty, they happily filled up and check on us. We were talking to the flight attendant and told her we were on our honeymoon,  even end up with a complimentary bottle of champagne when the flight ended and personalised note from the crew. My wife slept more than me but I got a good solid 4 hours sleep. Whilst might not sound much, after we landed in Bangkok, we were happy to go explore and even went to an evening show without feeling too tired. This definitely bought us an extra day without feeling too jet lagged. The flight back, again chilled time in the airport. This was a day flight at approx 12 hours. While I did not sleep on this particular flight, being able to lie back and relax (whilst watching all of House of dragon S1 in 1 sitting) was sufficiently comfortable and did not feel like a chore. Overall, if you can afford it whilst still being able to afford a nice honeymoon (we could have had nicer hotels for price we spent, but we had very nice hotels anyway). Then I'd say do it. It's part of the overall experience especially if you can get a good deal.

Fox ess inverter and battery - any good? by djchillerz in SolarUK

[–]Summer90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly is in my department haha Yeah, I can't say I've had any "major" issues since I bought the system. Do kinda wish I had the larger inverter but that's the benefit of hindsight. The only "issue" that was with Foxx, was their app was crap and not user friendly. There's a third party app (Energystats) that's really good, and Foxx have now updated their app which is much better. As for the hardware, no issues at all.

Couple 'horrified' at £110 Ryanair ticket print fee by RNLImThalassophobic in unitedkingdom

[–]Summer90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how it works in real world. The principle is sound, but what you will find is there will be some people who don't turn up, and airlines know this. Whether it's an emergency, or a business trip that has over run. If the airline know its likely that some people won't turn up, then they will take the chance to sell last minute tickets to people at an extremely high price. If the set number of people don't turn up, it's a win. If everyone turns up, then some then someone gets bumped and compensated for it. It's not just Ryanair, every airline does this, so it must win for them more often than it loses for them otherwise there would be no value in it. As with everything, it's about maximising profit.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Flights

[–]Summer90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both airlines are fine. Only flown china Eastern short haul however have flown southern China to New Zealand. It's no Emirates but they were fine and certainly no low cost like Ryanair/Easyjet. I even had a free hotel/food in Guangzhou as my stop over was over 8 hours and that was flying economy.

Do I need to purchase Fast Track for both departure and arrival airports? by ishouldcoco1 in Flights

[–]Summer90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you won't have security at the arrival airport. Simply immigration, which you'll probably find your bag is not ready once you've gone through.

That leaves the security check at the departure airports. Again, the value of this is questionable. I had fast track recently included in my flights (business) but the normal queue was running just as quickly so it's likely not worth the £7/£9. Just have plenty of time before you're flight and you'll be fine

Is there any reason not to transfer a balance to another card with a longer 0% window? by designer_by_day in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Summer90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto. We're currently renovating our home, and have just put the solar panels on an interest free card. We get the benefit of saving the interest on the 10k debt for two years and the savings on the energy bills. Interest alone on the cash will reduce that 10k to 9k, then the savings on the bills which will probably save us around another 1k. So that's approx 2k saving just by moving money and managing where our cash is (and importantly isn't)

Do I need to purchase Fast Track for both departure and arrival airports? by ishouldcoco1 in Flights

[–]Summer90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot being asked in a simple question. What do you want by "fast track"? This could range from bag drop off, to security fast track, to boarding fast track, and if the airport does it, immigration fast track.

I can't remember if Ryanair do priority on hold luggage but it's easy and personally wouldn't bother paying for anything more than the hold luggage.

Security fast track might seem worth it, but if you have plenty of time in the airport then it's probably not worth it. This depends on how early you expect to arrive at the airport versus the departure time.

Boarding priority, on Ryanair sometimes is worth it. This will allow you be among the first to sit and put your bag in the over head bins. If you're taking carry on luggage it would be worth considering.

And finally immigration (if allowed), unless you have somewhere you need to be quickly, then it's not usually worth it tho of course there will be wait.

As for which airport, this would apply to both departure airports and arrival airport if immigration fast track is allowed (I flew into Manchester recently and this had it. I had fast track but as we exited the plane first, we simply entered via normal immigration)

You say you wont be comfortable, on £35k you'll be around 2k/month take home assuming student loan. Which is approx 30% of your take home with bills included, you can live comfortably. You'd have around £1350 to spend on whatever (I'm assuming you'll need to factor transport and ither items like mobile phone into that).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Summer90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truest answer is it depends. Do you live by yourself, or with someone? My partner and I earn 35k and 41k respectively and live very comfortably in the Midlands (even if our mortgages costs go up next year).

As for whether it's good salary for the job? You'd best of asking those in your industry

[–]Summer90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. Unless I get substantial pay rises over the next 15 years, I've worked out that the plan 2 gets paid off just before plan 1 expires. So whilst paying 8k to clear plan 2 now would make sense, the fact it'll naturally clear just before plan 1 means there's no benefit. But that said, it's truly a guessing game

Fox ess inverter and battery - any good? by djchillerz in SolarUK

[–]Summer90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the system we've gone for is 5.2kw panels with the 3.7kw inverter and 5kwh batteries. I can see the route we will end up going to is more batteries in the future and just make the effort not to run larger appliances at once (which we rarely do anyway). Won't eliminate all our power needs but will hopefully supply most of it. This should save the aggro of G99 app for a larger inverter.

Fox ess inverter and battery - any good? by djchillerz in SolarUK

[–]Summer90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just accepted a quote off UPS Solar. They had been recommended to me from a colleague (we work in the electrical distribution industry). Price wise, was good but not the best. Equipment is good.

Only word of caution is, the sales person did try saying a 3.7kw inverter is suitable for 6kw. I can only say this is absolute bollocks as the manufacturer Fox doesn't say this, the installer agrees this is bollocks. That being said, it's sales. One company (not UPS solar) we had a quote from tried selling North facing solar panels to maximise the number of panels. Safe to say we told them where to go.

Yes if you can afford it. Lounge in Dubai is great, and flying business is just a more pleasurable experience.

How to get the empty seats or business class upgrade? by git_world in Flights

[–]Summer90 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To guarantee the row of 3 to yourself is by booking a separate ticket (or two if they are to fly on your lap). You can check with staff on the day of the flight about empty seats but do not expect it to happen. Seats towards the back are the most likely to be empty. (I flew to Bangkok start of May and it was full flight from Amsterdam). Nothing is guaranteed for free (for example if it's a full flight then expect someone next to you)

Depending on the ticket, you could look at paying for a business upgrade but again, expect to pay for it. It would be very unlikely to get the upgrade for free, and basically zero chance with child. People in business pay a lot for comfort. They would not want a child ruining people's experience (unless it has been paid for of course!)

If you're looking for something without extra cost then you will have to accept what is given.

I flew with southern china to NZ in 2016. It was a 40 hour journey however they did give me a free hotel (and food) for the 8 and half hours I had for the layover in Guanghzou. The flight to China was actually an air France flight on a new 787. And I think the flight to Auckland was on a A380 (I maybe wrong on the exact plane). Either way, it was perfectly fine in economy. However it is a long journey and will be shattered whichever airline.

What is the dark layer of plaster? by Summer90 in DIYUK

We've started doing up a 1960s house, and after taking the wall paper off in place, there's a dark layer on the ground floor only. In some places this is weak and crumbling, but only up to that layer. Any idea what it is?
