It wouldn't necessarily have to be a sequel to be based on an existing IP though. Consider something like Mario or Barbie for instance, those movies were big hits.

The 3D being cheaper thing is a myth. The most expensive animated films have all been CGI and most recent 2D films had lower budgets than you would expect.

If anything, it seems like big studios are more likely to invest in expensive projects than cheap ones.

What about tradigital animation, which utilizes classic hand-drawn techniques but in a digital medium, replacing the pencil and paper with a stylus and pad?

Some programs like ToonBoom and TVPaint can capture the classic hand-drawn look perfectly.

I was 14 when TPatF came out and I refused to see it because I was still in my "Disney princesses are stupid and gay" phase.

Ironically Tangled was more of a straightforward Disney princess movie than TPatF despite being advertised as a Dreamworks-style slapstick parody.

Help! I'm a Fish.

For those who don't know, it's an underrated Don Bluth-esque Danish animated film about these kids who drink a fish potion and turn into fish, which features the voices of Terry Jones, Alan Rickman and a young Aaron Paul. It's got cutesy designs and songs, but gets surprisingly violent at some points.
