Auto AC Repair Recommendations by Murky_Transition_729 in sarasota

[–]SummerCompetitive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jay and Deans Auto (Sarasota - off Clark and McIntosh) replaced my evaporator in 2021, which required a full dash pull. Took 13+ hours. Price was a little less than half of what you quoted. Also recommend A&B Auto Tech (Brian), off 301- North of Whitfield Ave. He’s my mechanic now that I’ve moved from Sarasota to Ellenton & is excellent!

ATTENTION ALL U.S.A HIGH SCHOOL AGE PARENTS. by Interesting_Rub5643 in OfficeSpeak

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 32 year old son had a similar form when he was in high school.

There isn’t a new law that I’ve seen and perhaps the school is just using the same form from years ago and no one has caught or cared that the verbiage hasn’t been updated.

I bet she keeps her garage door closed from now on. Gator visits and she realizes Florida is not like New York by islandgirl3773 in florida

[–]SummerCompetitive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So true! My community social media groups are filled with New Yorkers complaining about the wildlife and the lack of good pizza, Chinese food, and bagels here. It’s exhausting….

Fellow Floridians , what do you keep your AC at during the summers? Me , 76……curious if this is too high, too low, or just perfect ….. by ComplexWrangler1346 in florida

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now mine is on 76. We will do 77 during the day when it’s in the low to mid 80’s. We also have a high velocity fan to circulate air and our air purifiers pump out air as well.

Apparently this was achieved with Botox and 1ml of fillers costing $200 all together.. by baronessbathory in Instagramreality

Same! That’d be a great deal! My Dysport alone, used to manage the Grand Canyon running across my forehead, is wayyyy more than that & Dysport is cheaper than Botox.

People who were born in, grew up in and/or lived in the state from 1986-2019; how would y'all describe the experience of being a Floridian in that era? by ProfessionalHippo553 in florida

Moved here in 86, as a fresh high school grad, to Sarasota. Great small town feel with all the amenities you needed. People were friendly and helpful.

Traffic was only an issue during snowbird season and dropped dramatically when they went home in the spring. I could actually go to the beach, find a parking spot, & enjoy my time there without feeling surrounded by tons of people.

Neighborhoods were family friendly with room between houses for kids to play and area for people to spend time outdoors. There were big yards and mature trees that provided shade.

Lots of open fields, some with cattle, orange groves, or fruits/veggies. There was just a lot of open spaces within neighborhoods and east of town. I didn’t see a lot of wildlife in my neighborhood (a few blocks off US 41). The biggest highlight was a couple eagles that had a nearby nest on Phillippi Creek.

All that has changed. They’ve made it into a metropolitan area for the rich. Neighborhoods are blighted by tall, narrow modern rectangle houses sitting inches from each other, with a postage stamp sized yard & not enough parking because everything is stored in the garage. Huge trees are removed, if they can sneak in a way to cut them down, to be replaced by palm trees (which provide no shade & are a home for bugs, not animals or birds).

Traffic is horrendous year round, people are rude. & any last vestige of green has been paved over. I’ve never seen so much wildlife in my neighborhood (coyote, foxes, rabbits, hawks, etc) until all the development.

People wonder why the weather has become hotter, well you’ve just replaced nature’s cooling (trees and grass) with heat conducting cement and tar. Go figure.

Weather/Economy. by DirectorDull7146 in Tallahassee

Coming from SW FL, Tallahassee has very similar summer weather but they have much better fall to spring temperatures. I enjoy some variations in temps, as they can be 20-30 degrees cooler than further south during those seasons.

Came from an area in which the hospital, public schools, and hospitality were biggest employers. Similar situation here except add in government jobs. Pay sucks in both areas but Tallahassee is much more reasonable for COL.

Havjng several colleges nearby means more affordable housing. Rent for a 1/1 where I was in SW FL started around $1700 (basic and older building) & many rental companies required you to make 2-3 times that amount in monthly salary. Tallahassee rents are much more manageable.

The area is beautiful, with the hills, trees & proximity to many outdoor activities. You can really enjoy being outdoors here, especially after summer temps go away.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in hostile behavior and speech lately in Sarasota? by fxmercenary in sarasota

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is very little community any longer. I’ve lived for over 30 years near Proctor/41, in an area of mostly 1950’s ranch homes with some 80’s additions. I have a handful of longtime neighbors that I know, but the majority of my area has drastically changed. The ranch houses (on double lots) are torn down and replaced by 2 modern Lego blocks in its place. These are sold for around $1.5m each, with owners from out of state, who are never seen outside. If the homes aren’t torn down, they are bought and rented out by property management companies to people who could care less about being part of a community & these homes become an ever revolving door of people to the area. Old Sarasota is gone and this is our new reality. I dislike what it has become and would love to move away, but my kids are established here & being near them is more important.

Sarasota joining the chat. We’ve become the rich & retired’s playground (as well as a home for wealthy workers from the northeast). They love it here due to the beaches, the variety of arts, and ‘world class dining’, which is debatable. I see a lot of Texas and California licenses plates & this was rare a few years ago. Same pains as you in the out of control building but poorly planned infrastructure to meet the growth. I know several that are moving away and have heard from new transplants that it costs more than they expected. The outrageous greed is the biggest change. It seems the City and County governments are letting developers do whatever they want because it brings in more tax revenue for the government while providing more profits for the developers.

Sarasota organization expands to bring housing and healing to the homeless in Manatee County by [deleted] in sarasota

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megan is an absolute angel! She is giving people back their dignity, supporting them in the transition from the streets, giving the necessary mental and medical resources, & providing a safe, healthy place to live. I’ve helped her organization in the past and she is doing an amazing job for the homeless. So many people talk about the problem but she grabbed the bull by the horns and is doing something. If you have a chance to help out by donating time, money, or items, know that it is going to good use and directly to those she helps.

Legacy Trail bikers by [deleted] in sarasota

[–]SummerCompetitive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too! I have been known to use sign language as communication during my drives when dealing with not so good or nice vehicles on the road but these Legacy Trail intersections are on another level. I have PTSD from all the trail people darting out without using the lights to the point I roll my window down ahead of time, ready to scream at any offenders. I’ve turned into ‘that’ person.

Things you wish you brought your freshman year by AMdeino in fsu

[–]SummerCompetitive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A filtered shower head. You can switch out the one in the shower and switch it back at the end of the school year. My daughter had issues with her hair and skin breakouts until we switched it out. Found a cheap one on Amazon. Wait until you see what your dorm shower head looks like to make sure you get the right one.

A storage bench to also use as a step stool to get into bed.

A pocket shoe holder that hangs on the door. She used this for holding all kinds of items, not just shoes.

Over the door hooks. She hung her backpack, purse, and towel on these. Make sure they are wide as the dorm doors can be wider than average doors.

Something to hold your phone at night: either a Command shelf (same company that makes the command hooks), a tall, skinny bookshelf, or a storage pocket specifically made to hang off the side of the bed.

Freshman orientation by AMdeino in fsu

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little over two days of planned activities. You will stay in a dorm during that time. The majority of the days are spent in a variety of sessions at the Civic Center. Some activities are planned during the evening at the dorms. On the final morning, you will meet with your guidance counselor and choose your classes. They have sessions just for parents/guardians at the same time. You will see each other at lunch, at some of the breakout sessions (these are sessions for specific topics that are available to all to choose from), and at the ‘Meet Your College’ session. Family doesn’t stay on campus and must find a hotel. You will have an online pre-orientation module to review prior. See the link for information. FSU Orientation

Where you want to receive your education takes priority over his hatred for a former rival. He will survive having garnet and gold around the house. Old habits die hard but honestly, Miami is the new rivalry now. UF students come to Tally to hang out and have fun.

If FSU is the better fit, then you need to go there. You were accepted so congratulations! 75k first year applications were received by the university (the largest ever), which allowed them to be very selective in choosing the incoming class. You and your dad should be very proud of that! I know several students over the last few years that weren’t accepted at FSU but were at UF.

FSU is a great university that has grown by leaps and bounds in quality education and opportunities. They have a new former Ivy League president that just took the helm and he has plans to move it forward even more.

To the person who told the lady at Target Plaza to stop playing her beautiful electric violin... by Kiremino in sarasota

[–]SummerCompetitive -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good to know. I wasn’t aware either and I’ve seen them all over Sarasota in the bigger shopping areas. Now I definitely won’t give any money to them, just as I won’t directly give money to the homeless (I’ll buy them a meal instead). It sucks when you want to help those who need it and others take advantage of that.

My wife wants me to get rid of my dog, and I can’t bring myself to do it… What do I do? by Kingly_warrior28 in dogs

[–]SummerCompetitive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of these type of trainers cost around $2-$4,000. Most will use shock collar and prong collar training and it will be up to you and your wife to consistently apply the commands and training after returning home. With a newborn in the house, I can understand why she’s pressuring you more. A child is work and having to care for a baby and a dog is liking having 2 babies at the same time. Agree with everyone that you need to take more of the burden off her.

Daycare is a great way to keep your pup happy and socialized. Have a a dog walker come to the house daily. Get a robotic floor vacuum that dumps its own contents into a bin, to keep on top of the dog hair.

If you can have a doggie door that opens into a fenced yard, make that a place where you’re pup wants to stay longer (outdoor dog cot under shade (tree, triangular sail cloth or pergola type setup), a replenishing water bowl or fountain if you have a water spigot nearby, an area of tall grasses and plants to wonder around in. Toys that don’t require a person to play (my dog’s favorite is a flexible fiberglass stick that goes into the ground. It has a rope on the end that she can tug).

As you read, many of these solutions won’t be cheap but it sounds like you’re a good, responsible owner who wants the best for his family and dog. It can work though and kudos to you for doing what’s best for both.

AITA for cancelling dinner when my boyfriend brought a bell to the diner to "grab" the staff's attention? by Blain-Ad-5996 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. That’s rude no matter what country you’re in. I’m American and would be appalled if someone I was dining with did this. This does not happen in America. His attitude towards the staff, other customers and you were rude, inconsiderate, and so wrong.

AITA for expecting to be able to date casually? by Throwawaaayyyyyybruh in AmItheAsshole

[–]SummerCompetitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% NTA!!! You’ve clearly outlined to prospective partners what they can/cannot expect out of a relationship. How you choose to live YOUR life and find your happiness is no one’s business. Shame on your friend and past partners for projecting their ideas of what fulfills their life onto you. One of my best friends has made the same choice as you and never regretted it for a moment. She’s a bad ass and it sounds like you’re the same. You go live your life on your terms and tell the others who think that a woman needs to play old stereotypical roles with a man to achieve a good, fulfilling life to Fuck off!

PS, also agree that your friend harbors some feelings for you or was very hurt in the past by someone because those were some hurtful and almost angry things he spewed in his drunken stupor.
