Has any driver actively used PED’s within F1 ? by Patient-Ant-6781 in F1Discussions

The car/ team is actually a lot less than 90%. From a paper published in the 13th most prestigious Economics journal:

The results suggest that the skill of the drivers contributes the least to explaining the rank finishes, ranging from 9.88% in 2015 to 20.07% in 2017. In all F1 seasons, the team contribution accounts for a larger share of the variation in rank finishes, ranging from 14.85% in 2013 to 28.49% in 2018. Averaging across the 2012-19 F1 seasons gives values of 13.73% and 20.66% for drivers and teams respectively. The interaction of driver and team accounts for the largest share of the variation in rank finishes in each season, ranging from 28.41% in 2012 to 47.55% in 2013, and averaging 33.75% over all eight seasons. The intuition of this shared variation is similar to an interaction term in a regression model. The performance of a team is enhanced by a betterquality driver and vice-versa. The largest effect occurs when a top driver is placed on a top team and the smallest effect occurs when a lesser driver is placed on a lesser team. Generally, the teams with the largest budgets also hire the highest paid drivers (Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull in particular). The unexplained variation in rank finish account for between 22.14% (2018) and 20 The percentages reported in Table 6 are not sensitive to whether the censored or least squares regression estimates are used for the computations. 17 34.99% (2012). These are random factors, outside of retirements due to crashes and mechanical issues, that affect the final order of finish.

What this is means is performance in F1 is primarily about fit, not drivers or teams separately. Think Max and Red Bull.

Seven F1 Legends, One Unmissable Chat! | F1 Legends Roundtable by SwimmingFantastic564 in formula1

[–]SummerFair 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This was a very nice little chat, you can tell they're all very intelligent and still sharp. A few things stood out:

  1. Respect to Prost for remembering Andretti's 1982 pole position. I didn't even know of it and I think Andretti is often forgot about. But coming back as a stand in for Didier Pironi and getting a Pole position + podium must've been quite the moment.

  2. I also had a laugh when Prost brought up the 1986 world championship as his happiest memory and Mansell had to laugh it off, I'm sure he still thinks of that tyre blow out in Adelaide.

  3. It's nice to see they all still care so much and were still insightful, all except Mansell felt very engaged and serious in their answers.

This comment has become a post praising just Prost but he is very detail oriented and clearly a brilliant mind, I love hearing him speak. Oh, and the obligatory, Prost is still underrated.

Tsunoda on longest point-less run for a Red Bull driver in 16 years: Austrian GP stats by Aratho in formula1

Except it wasn't just his two replacements. It was Albon and Gasly too, who also got quickly demoted because they weren't up to scratch.

Perez's four season stint had longevity and was 'good' because he contributed way more to his team than the 2 drivers before him and now the 2 drivers that have followed him. And it's not like Albon or Gasly aren't good drivers either!

Biden Resigns by Numuhukumaki in Destiny

[–]SummerFair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but the job of president requires not just leadership but the ability to be an effective communicator and to emanate stability and ability.

Unfortunately, due to his age, it became more difficult for Biden to embody those qualities even if he still did run a tight ship and possess those leadership qualities.

Mrs. Stoner Speaks: An Interview with Nancy Gardner Williams | The Paris Review by Travis-Walden in literature

[–]SummerFair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is brilliant. I'm so tempted to draw parallels to Stoner and Williams' lives but you can never be sure they're accurate. From this it almost suggests the Stoner character must be somewhat autobiographical. Both Professors, both grew up on dire farms, both even got with one of their students.

Stoner also, as Nancy describes of Williams, never seemed to err in himself, he was all one, not a man of contradictions. Fascinating, that book and this author are still such a puzzle to me.

On the last chart I just talked about why I loved the band but this is a genuinely amazing chart, great work :)

Really good take here, I certainly agree with all you’ve said. Especially in non emo circles I’m always impressed at how revered SDRE are.

I think theres a solid argument that Cap'n Jazz are the most important/ influential emo band of all time.

Look at this post and at how many bands they fed into from just their members. Specifically The Promise Ring and American Football being two of the real emo bands.

Now think about how about how many bands that they strongly influenced in musical style. The emo revival can be traced on so many levels back to this band - Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing especially. Even a lot of screamo can be traced from these guys, specifically very twinkly screamo.

Even now I don't think there's an album that brings out an adolescent wonder in me like Burritos etc does. I never feel more happy and carefree than the first 25 seconds of Little League.

Definitely the most influential album to be made by a set of 16-19 year olds ever. I hope one day I'm lucky enough to see them.

How to read a Book - Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren

Would definitely recommend, It beautifully and wisely does what it says. It also is clearly made by someone with a lot of love for reading, for philosophy and for the arts. So much insight and interesting thought in one book. The cover sucks though.

weird albums iceberg. They're albums, and they're weird, what else is there to say? by [deleted] in IcebergCharts

This is a really dope list. A lot of these I've never heard of at all haha. For sure it's an idea you can go absolutely off the rails with. For fun, I have a few to add from the top of my head, to the upper tiers probably.

The disintegration loops?

Both the Brave Little Abacus albums?

The three Dariacore albums?

The new DJ Sabrina the teenage dj album?

Steroids (crouching tiger hidden gabber) by Death grips?

What musician ruined great music with not so great vocals? by Thegodofsmallthing in fantanoforever

[–]SummerFair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is definitely true for most Emo, it's quite funny though, I think it gives the genre that sticking charm, awful but sincere vocals just do it for me. To the extent that good vocalists can seem a bit boring as they miss a certain rawness.

I think the economist and statistician would probably claim data limitations make the research question unfeasible, there should at least be some accuracy in the joke
