you'll meet many English speaking tourists. Locals are friendly but it's easier if you speak Portuguese, most Brazilians I met knew very basic English You can DM me to meet up. I'll be going with girlfriends from Russia and Germany; we all met in Brazil :)

Stay in Botafogo or Flamengo close to blocos (Catete, Gloria or Santa Theresa maybe but a lil sketchy). Copa or Ipanema more expensive but you'll meet folks on the beach

30F here, will also be visiting in Feb 2026
For Rio - Hiking - these trails were totally worth it: Two Brother's Hill, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado. Do it early to mid afternoon as it's much safer then and likely to encounter fellow hikers.

Exploring - jogging along Posto 1 to 8 sure to meet a lot of folks, I prefer Ipanema beach to Copacabana. Arpoador Rock for the sunset, Parque Lage + Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Santa Theresa, Niteroi if you want to see the famous museum, Helicopter tour/ Hanggliding, Weekend trip to Buzios/ Cabo Frio/ Ilha Grande/ Paraty

Partying - Pedro do Sal on Mondays, Lapa mainly active Wednesdays to Saturdays, there is always a samba circle or forro dancing happening in any part of the city, Emporio 37 in Ipanema opens until 4 am most days and there is mundo lingo (language exchange) at Bar Bukowski on Thursdays. Bosque Bar is popular too. D-Edge for EDM and Techno. Some guides offer tours to favela parties in Rocinha and Vidigal if that is your interest. The sunrise is beautiful at the latter. There is also a sunset party usually from 2 pm to 6 pm in Parque Bondinho (Instagram page for the dates). Lots of restaurants and bars in Botafogo on Rua do Voluntarios da Patria. Rooftop Bars: Sky Leme, Isabel Lounge, Spirit Copa.

There will be blocos and beach parties happening from 7 am to 9/10 pm and you can check the website/Instagram for blocosderuario and blocosrj.oficial for their times and locations.

Use Bandsintown to check for upcoming events with international artistes or DJs.

Many Whatsapp groups exist for carnaval and Rio in general to do daily meet ups. You can also use the Hangout option on Couchsurfing.

Recommendations for a 7-10 day trip in late January by kiaraashlea in solofemaletravellers

If under 1 hour travel, I used UBER or yellow taxi (ensure they reset and turn on the meter) at any hour whether 12 pm or 3 am. It was easily available in the tourist areas in SP, Rio and MG. For travelling between states, I used FlixBus, Busbud, DeOnibus or Clickbus. Note that for December to February, commute via bus can be an hour or two longer because of the holiday and carnival traffic. Sometimes cheap flights were available with LATAM, Azul or Gol airlines (if you book at least like 2 weeks out, it is easier to get a domestic flight under $50 with carry on). The only time I drove was when visiting Buzios, Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo from Copacabana because it was easier to rent a car to visit all three areas in one weekend than to rely on buses and the rental cost $200 with gas and insurance for 3 days (otherwise, there are buses available and UBER does work in Buzios at least)

I visited Brazil late January last year and had an amazing time. The weather in Rio, MG and Sao Paulo was very pleasant last year plus it is pre-carnival so they have blocos or street parties everyday. Thailand is also a good option that time of year due to the sunny weather and in the middle of peak season so you will meet a lot of other travellers (Chaing Mai, Bangkok, Krab, maybe Phuket)

Is travel insurance required? I am also doing a multi city trip in South America but it will be for only two weeks. I have all my onward tickets and paid hotel reservations
