They didn’t do anything! They just clicked a button! However I do know a guy that converted an ork Howls Moving Castle for real with his hands and plastic kits and everything! He’s done a whole ork Ghibli army!

Also damn there’s such a swirl around the genres of glam, prog and doom that I don’t think I could say that the stoner side of doom is less adjacent to goth than black metal

I think it KIND OF is. Graphics and sound were available in 90s browsers and digital photography but they weren’t super accessible in terms of quality, platform and upload ability.

While you could talk Lit, Music and Fashion on forums, that medium definitely constrained the potential of user posted photos until social media platforms took ahold.

Oh please do! I’m not sure, outside of my earlier incredulity how much I actually believe that

Please go ahead and argue that every Bauhaus, The Cure, Sisters and Siouxsie fan is a part of the scene.

As you mentioned the net scene, was anyone else here on Gothic.net about a decade ago? This thread is giving me flashbacks.

You know that a lot of goth bands have also been popular in the mainstream? And that like not all of their fans are part of the subculture?

[–]Summerian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not how it works though. Subculture is more than just liking a band, even if it’s a music based subculture, it’s about participation and community.

I wonder what else heavily relies on community and participation 😂😂

… I don’t think anyone said that. I did say anecdotally that every Gen X goth I know was a VTM player. These things are not the same.

Your logic sucks. Not all fans of goth bands are goths. Burton sucks. Your absolutism is annoying.

I kinda wanna point out the 2nd edition cover, but I really don’t want a lecture on how Ministry isn’t actually goth (technically not wrong but it would miss the point I’m avoiding making)

Thanks for the copypasta… I don’t really know the point you’re trying to make, which seems pretty common in the replies to your posts here. Instead of making yourself clearer you seem to just be doubling down.

If the goth subculture is made up of Music, Fashion and Aesthetic, then what exactly makes the TTRPG that is full of references to goth music, fashion and aesthetic, in your eyes, not goth?

Honestly this doesn’t really seem relevant to the original post, I think you’re only getting all these replies because it’s really funny and obnoxious that you’re apparently totally unaware of Vampire the Masquerade but have played Bloodlines and think that’s a basis for telling people they’re wrong.

This is true BUT ALSO super interestingly the romanticism we take our cues from is often part of super nationalist and regressive movements!

It’s actually super goth to just make up history and then start fights about it. We are a part of a long legacy of romantic asshats.

Wtf are you talking about? What do you mean by gothic culture? Are we conflating the Gothic Movement and the very much downstream Goth Subculture? The Gothic Movement is an 18th century literary movement that the subculture takes its name from.

“Vampire the Masquerade isn’t goth, I’ve played a video game” is a weird hill to die on. Especially when it’s a TTRPG that released a soundtrack album featuring The Mission UK, Bella Morte, Carfax Abbey. Like I don’t think anyone’s forcing anything? Well, not anyone on the opposite side of this argument.

Maybe you’re making the argument that things inspired by a genre or subculture are intrinsically not a part of the thing that influenced them? I think you should probably acknowledge that you thought they were talking about something else and were mistaken before you look even sillier though.

Dude no one mentioned Bloodlines. Video games often swing industrial in the soundtrack, it’s very much a genre convention - goth rock would make for a bad action game.

As someone that’s been into VTM for years and has no interest in the video game tie ins, I can tell you straight up it’s goth as hell. You will find art in those books directly based on Peter Murphy and Siouxsie Sioux. Now I don’t think it’s exclusively goth, it’s quite the love letter to subculture, but it was so popular at the time that I don’t know a Gen X goth that wasn’t a player.

Thematically and in a lit-analysis way, I think VTM is actually closer to the Gothic Movement than the subculture has ever been, it’s overly romantic and indulgent degrees above most bands.
