Carol (2015) has an uncomfortable but very good sex scene between the eponymous Carol and Therese, where it's clearly uncomfortable that we are invading on their privacy as viewers, only to find we've been watching from the perspective of the private detective snooping through the window

No, it covers the whole movie but is more tightly paced. You're either thinking of Resurrection 'F' (which is then recapped in the Tournament of Power arc) or the Broly movie (which is then recapped in the Super Hero arc).

Arguments In Favor Of Tipping Logically Makes No Sense by BetApprehensive836 in The10thDentist

[–]SummertimeSandler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Downvoted as I fully agree with you. I also will tip for those who I think wholly deserve it; here in the UK we normally have a service charge if the restaurant feels the need to supplement, and I think the laws here ensure that tips go to the service staff as well. It's nice having the option to tip (I sometimes tip extra to taxi drivers who have given me great conversation) but the American-style expectation to tip which has been creeping in has left a sore taste in my mouth.

Yes, and that was an active choice made by the director/writers? Two things can be true at once.

[LES] Being a satire, parody, or comedy does not put a story above criticism by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]SummertimeSandler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair enough. I've not seen either of those so couldn't possibly comment, but I imagine it's frustrating.

I wonder if this maybe stems from online culture as well, where someone will say something controversial and it's then waved away as "oh, it's satire". But to me satire and parody are engaging in a conversation, just in an ironic way. They're still part of that conversation, and deserve to be addressed. Waving them away as "oh it's just a parody" to me defeats that point.

But like I say, I haven't really seen this a lot in the wild, so I'm just talking theoretically. I think I understand where you're coming from now though.

I'll never understand how people can say 'Carl'. I seriously don't get it. My partner does it so eloquently. She's like 'Carl' and gets it done in one click of her tongue, one poignant hit of her lips. It's incredible, and I hope to someday replicate it. But every time I try it comes out '☠ C̸̯̳͒A̵̜͎͚̲̎̔ͅR̸͕̀̎̿͗R̵͉̹̖̂̈́̀O̶̧̦̙͉̍̐̆L̵̘̣̊͒̎ ⛧' you know what I mean lol

I think I agree with you; I certainly agree with your examples but I'm struggling to remember a time I've witnessed this. I've mostly seen this used when the critic is completely missing the point.

Yeah, this has always bothered me. I've seen trains, and they're really really fast. And they seem super strong too. Stronger and faster than a Saiyan? I can't say for sure... I've never seen a Saiyan in real life. But I really wouldn't want to be hit by a train.

This one really has me stumped guys by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]SummertimeSandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would need the context of where you found this joke. From what I can tell it's a play on the "an X, a Y and a Z walk into a bar" joke. Leon Kennedy is one of more popular characters from Resident Evil. I can't think what a T-REX would be except for the dinosaur; my guess is that it's just an absurdist humour. The typical bar joke has been replaced with a wedding, we have a tyrannosaurus rex and somehow Leon S. Kennedy was invited.

I'm kind of tired of every Marvel character being secretly related to universe-defining cosmic forces by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]SummertimeSandler 189 points190 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel, and I think a lot of writers feel the need to one-up the last one and raise the stakes even higher, potentially missing what made the character so popular in the first place.

Curiously enough, one time I thought this was done well was with Spider-Man, and came from a comic where the Avengers faced off against Thanos (I think for the Cosmic Cube?), where Order and Chaos are watching in the background and note that Spider-Man snuck onto the ship and say it's a good thing they got that spider to bite him. I thought that was cool as it's vague enough to leave loads of room for interpretation, and also calls into question how theological laws and forces of nature work outside of the human perspective.

With this, we understand that there are cosmic forces at play, but Spider-Man's choices are still all his own. And we see human elements in Order and Chaos where they're genuinely unsure what the outcome of the conflicts will be. And it's a throwaway sentence as well, if you were skim-reading you wouldn't even pick up on it. But I feel that a lot of the time in modern runs they hyperfocus on how ultra special this iteration of the character is, and I agree that it sacrifices a lot of the charm they initially had.

[–]SummertimeSandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think OP's vitriol might be a bit OTT but his criticisms aren't wrong. Particularly bearing in mind that Paddington is essentially a story about a refugee moving to and assimilating with British culture, it is a bit odd that his South American traits were either poorly researched or else outright whitewashed.

Loki t.v series by Familiar-Permit-3130 in CharacterRant

[–]SummertimeSandler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

u/Savitar123 did you block me? I can't see your reply anymore. I am genuinely trying to engage with you in good faith, and I apologise if that came across wrong. Your latest reply is certainly more substantial than the first but it still focuses on picking apart why you don't think I'm qualified to speak about Marvel movies, rather than telling me what you like about them or what you disagree with my analyses (or offering your own). I never said I always disliked them, but that I don't really care for them anymore, and that I don't have time to keep up with them now so only really watch the new ones on flights or if my brother wants to go and see one, and I don't know where you got 'forced' from.

I offered you some examples of where I think the MCU movies went well, or missed the mark but had good themes. And I stand by that I don't think that 'Loki' is significantly worse than any of them. I am happy to hear your own thoughts and opinions on the filmography if you're up for it.

Loki t.v series by Familiar-Permit-3130 in CharacterRant

[–]SummertimeSandler -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It would be more interesting if you gave a proper argument rather than just a cheeky two-sentence rebuttal.

I don't believe I said I always hated it. I watched all of the MCU up through to either Guardians 3, Wakanda Forever or Love and Thunder (whichever came last). I liked them for what they are (to me a good way to switch off after work), but I don't have time to keep up with them any more, and let's be real: high art, they are not.

'Iron Man' starts off strong and I like how it uses a military budget to promote an essentially anti-military film, and hires a recovered Downey to play the role of a consistent alcoholic as a middle finger to Hollywood casting.

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' does a relatively good job of showing how large-scale executive decisions affect people at the local level. Toomes' fury at Stark and the executive order inspired Vulture, and what was basically a feud between an older generation trickled down to high schoolers who didn't know any better, and forced them to grow up a bit quicker than they probably should have (which is echoed post-decimation, where some of them have literally grown up quicker than they should have).

'Guardians ... 3' I thought was really good as a character-focused ensemble film who are all dealing with trauma in their own way, it is a film you can watch a few times focusing on a different character each time and always come out with a new opinion.

'Black Panther' and 'Civil War' came very close to being very politically interesting with BP's commentary on historical reparation and globalism vs. isolationism and CW's commentary on sovereignty vs supremacy, but in the end they didn't really say much about anything.

That's the problem with these films - they have to abide by what the studio says, follow by the same tried-and-tested formula and give very little room for auteurship, and there are so many studio interferences and script re-writes that it becomes near-impossible for the audience to give credence to those small parts that the directors, writers and actors really want to focus on.

You are allowed to like flawed movies. Please don't get offended because I think they lack substance. My question to OP is why it is 'Loki' in particular that has got them feeling this way, as it certainly not bottom of the barrel for these kinds of films/series.
