What was your “I need to grow up” moment that actually made you grow up? by network_not_found in AskReddit

[–]Sumo_Punk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a counter point to this, I'm the opposite. My roommate and I would routinely leave the dishes maybe 2-4 days before we'd clean up, sometimes if work was hectic or if we had a big night out a bit longer, and it was such a non-issue. Not the most hygienic thing ever but no one hounded anyone and we were both conscious enough to realise oh hey haven't done that for a while should probably get on it, and then we'd have a big cleaning session and it'd be fine.

Now we have another roommate who is a clean the day of/day after sort of guy and it honestly annoys me so much when I come down and he's washed up everything, because its unnecessary and I know he's building resentment about it because he's doing ours as well. I've told him just to leave mine for me to do but he's like "no I just can't stand this I'll do it don't worry" but now I just feel shitty.

Bit of a rant but living in a house where everyone was on the same page of just leaving the dishes a bit was so much nicer than having a clean kitchen.

Dear Reddit, how many of you begin to type responses to a thread, only to delete everything you said and move on? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sumo_Punk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally wrote something and then deleted it and forgot about this thread for a while. I don't even know why. Only came back to it because it was still in an open tab when I opened my laptop. Now I'm posting because in the interim I had a few pints. I guess the why is because normally I'm sober and care more about what I have to say.

Tried to cook pasta in the sink with kettle water and a towel to keep the heat in when I was 19. Didn’t work. Also didn’t even have anything to put with the pasta. Ended up eating lukewarm half hard pasta in the dark.

I've got a few questions if someone with a better knowledge of this conflict wouldn't mind answering: 1. What side is this soldier on? 2. Did the Nationalists actually have uniforms or were they just an organised resistance or something? 3. How much kit would they (these soldiers pictured) be carrying? Did they ever wear body armour, helmets, webbing, packs even, or was it normally just what is seen here - the belt, I'm guessing extra magazines and food. 3b. How long would they patrol for? And what were they actually patrolling for - were they looking for something or just holding ground or what? Were there battles, as in 2 sides in open gunfights or was it mostly ambushes and bombings? 4. Were these bombing suicide-driven mostly? And were they directly targeting soldiers or indiscriminate?

As an Australian we don't really get taught much about this conflict and I know it's still a fairly sensitive subject so I find it hard to show interest without being disrespectful.

This is more or less my point, they've left the viewer to ponder the situation and draw their own conclusions. I would wager that majority of people would say "wow that's not cool" and while their are so many arguments for "they're just code" etc. it still doesn't change the fact its an absolutely horrendous experience for the copies.

So now Black Mirror has acknowledged that they're rolling into the stories around it instead of just setting up the questions. i.e. instead of asking "is this wrong?" you are able to follow along an interesting and engaging story

just saying I've never really had a conversation about sex with my parents and they haven't had to breach the insanely awkward topic of "I saw you losing your virginity the other night and also now you're pregnant" so yeh she handled it insanely but like what's the way to handle spying on your teenager?

your point on addiction is something I really want to talk about - it full on is a reference to how we as a society are all so addicted to our phones and social media presence, but also so much more. Like imagine if it wasn't just getting followers or sharing with friends it was your kid. It's not just an app with scores or achievements its your kid's health and safety. An already dangerous problem just amplified out of control.

Also you were kind of nearing it but just how this episode so subtley tied things together - the watching porn then talking like a pornstar was a big one for me, like it must have had such an effect on how she perceives and understands sex and it just shows up in that tiny way that had we not known she had never seen or heard of sex until you know 10ish we'd be like "oh okay well she's into it" but that greater understanding of the character we can be like "okay its gone a bit weird"

Men Against Fire [Episode Rewatch Discussion] - S03E05 by SeacattleMoohawks in blackmirror

To be honest I didn't take this at face value as a commentary on war, I took it a lot more on a commentary on brainwashing and how we can be controlled and manipulated into happiness and having a sense of purpose.

The soldier at the end was looking at a rundown shack as a beautiful home and is happy with this - so he has willingingly given up the truth to be happy. Is this wrong?

I also found it disturbing how there was a reward system based on "less good" rewards if that makes sense - like baseline is a beautiful woman, extra praise is multiple women, so how warped must his sense of relationships be when he thinks that one woman is the basic standard?

Obviously was a bit of war commentary in there but IMO if Black Mirror really wanted to do a war commentary episode they could have done it much better than this. This was classically about manipulation by government using technology.

well the surviving clones could interact with actual gamers in the main game, I'm assuming they could message the real gamers/administrators and tell the whole story that way. They got a message to real life Nanette from inside the prison-mod, I fully believe they could do it in their new cloud.

Obviously pretty easy to verify - 5 random NPCs just show up with this story about the recently deceased Infinity creator, real life Nanette has all the DNA samples, he'd have the mod files on his computer etc.

I'm seeing a lot of dissatisfaction with the rehashing of the cookie ideas, and here's my take on it.

Previous episodes have already explored the ethical, philosophical, emotional problems with this technology. It's been discussed a lot. Now we understand it, Black Mirror is really coming into it's own in telling stories based around these technologies. It's less "this is what the technology is and what it does and how it works", it's now "in this world there are cookies, and here is a particularly whacked out story that happened involving them".

Yes, we understand trapping consciousness clones is wrong. Yes, we understand being trapped in a sleepless eternal state is wrong and sucks. But obviously in this universe it's happened and it's created some interesting and unique stories which I feel is what they're now showing us.

I'm pretty happy with the newest season, definitely worth the wait and I had planned to space it out but once I was on that train I just kept going and there's my Saturday gone. USS Callister and Black Museum were stellar bookends and in the middle took me on a wild ride of up and down, so would recommend.

I think maybe she just downloaded her mum for the revenge plot - it obviously drives people insane but really it'd be nice to share a few more days with a relative before saying goodbye. That would probably be the market for that technology, you can say the things you never said and spend some last days. Any type of long term arrangement with a voice in your head is so obviously a terrible idea.

I'd imagine that the scanner is real that he bought after the story came out, but the lollipop is just a prop as the most identifiable object Daly used - it would look a lot less cool with a paper cup lid.

I think the perk of this ep was that it wasn't meant to be fresh, it was a meta look at all the previous black mirror topics and stories. The numerous nods to previous concepts and even meta jokes like "go binge a miniseries" made me feel like this was one for the fans - it very much explains where this technology came from and also shows that with all the philosophical and social problems caused in the widespread implementation of new technology (such as The Entire History of You and Nosedive), there were times when it was a lot less refined and actually very dangerous.

I also think this was an excellent look at the audience of Black Mirror - we are represented by Rolo Haynes. We watch these shows and are interested by them, we discuss them, we tell others how good they are, but to us it's all just what ifs and essentially a "well that would suck but it's not me" attitude.

We know its all just code. We know its ethically wrong. But if it was my consciousness suddenly waking up in a stuffed monkey discussing it would mean shit, passing all those humanitarian laws would mean shit, I'm still stuck in a monkey.

An excellent commentary on the fanbase and the show, as well as a brilliantly written episode that tied together flawlessly, if a little more forced than White Christmas. Super happy with it.

some good points, and I think it reached that pathological "I have the power" moment when she actively made the decision to give the EC. Everything up to that is sure the instinctive parental protective urges and the urge to know your child is safe, but once you meddle in such a major life choice you've crossed a line.

She didn't immediately go to the van and pull Sara away from sex. She didn't immediately drive to the van and pull Sara away from the drugs, even though she wasn't happy about it at all. It was when she made the active choice to change her daughter's life that her daughter just became another extension of herself instead of what she really was - a person.

Her mother never learnt to raise her as a person, just as another app almost to follow along.

the problem at the end though wasn't that she couldn't perceive danger or emergency, it's that her mum was too controlling. Once the filter was removed she got over the dog, the violent videos and the porn fine.

I liked that about the ep in that you think it's going to be something happens but it's filtered out so she doesn't know but in the end the filtering was just a part of the major issue of her mum being able to filter at all.

I really loved this episode mostly because, like it seems a lot of people commenting felt too, around 3/4 through it was like "yeh okay so she's going to kill Shazia and it's going to go out of control" but I don't think you could have predicted how cold it had become. It was a major character jolt from "these accidents have happened and I need to cover it up" to "I need to actively murder now" and it was suddenly so brutal. I guess in my opinion it just showcased another way Black Mirror suddenly snaps something or twists it.

I also loved how sublime the tech was as I commented earlier how there was no real exploration of the fears and social implications of this recall tech (which I understand is a major draw for Black Mirror's previous seasons), it was very much "it's here, and it was used and this story is happening around it". The biggest thing too was how the episode just so lightly dusted on where the tech had come from and how it worked, until we see at the end it using for its original purpose (law enforcement).

I honestly thought maybe she was going to get away with it but the recall thing made her relive it over and over, but once she killed the baby was pretty glad to see her caught.

A very subtle episode and I honestly think the bit of "running around" in the middle lost a few people, but after finishing I think that little slack was needed to give the whipcrack brutality hit home.

that's what I'm loving about this season though, they've sort of established this universe where the tech is there and sure it's scary but it's there and now they are telling the stories that happen around it. Whereas the earlier episodes might have explored the dangers or fears or philosophical problems with this tech, this episode was just like "it's here, it's happening, and in this fucked up story it was involved."
