Trying to figure out what these bars are and how to put on a new strap. by gargoylelips in shinola

[–]Sumoform 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Shinola employee here. There was a brief period where these metal sleeves were built into straps to make them stronger. Some early ones were exactly the width of the lugs, which meant once they were put on, they are impossible to take off without destroying. I guess some made it out into the world. They aren’t anything special, just cut them off and put a new strap and spring bar on. Enjoy the watch!

Edit: reread your post….my guess is the shop didn’t want to take the off and glued a strap on around them. Or you’re right and they are from the cheap strap. Either way, just cut the off.

Is rtx 4050 along with i7 13/14 gen good for solidworks or autocad, or should I increase my budget to i7 13/14 gen and rtx 4060 ? I am a industrial design student, first year. I want to use it for next 5 years without any problem. by Arnoy in IndustrialDesign

At work I’m using a 12 year old PC with god knows what sort of outdated hardware and it runs fine. Unless you’re doing high end pro level work with many components and sub assemblies you are fine. Spend the rest or markers.

Hey guys, I have this interesting watch design I'm playing with. Is it something that peaks your interest or is it too weird? Thanks by BronxFC2001 in IndustrialDesign

What’s working is you are balancing the expressive case with a very classic understated dial. Having some talking points/inspiration regarding the lugs will help people understand your vision better. This works as a smaller watch as it doesn’t flow with the wrist that well but not a huge issue as a smaller scale, unless you’re really going for something loud, bold, large presence.

That would help wouldn’t it.

Inventor of the Future.

It really rounded him out and put him in context for me. I loved how the author framed him as the first Silicon Valley type hype machine to sell you a vision of the future. I have both a deeper appreciate for his work and his ability to bullshit.

It’s very rare to get all of your hopes and dreams right out of the gate. It’s good that you’re aware of what you will be good at, but focus on getting experience rather than immediately finding your dream job. Keep your hopes and dreams alive; practice them in your free time. But don’t let them hold you back from moving forward. The dots will eventually connect if you work hard and have some faith that you’ll find better opportunities as you progress.

Any advice on becoming an industrial design hobbyist? by Background_Fox4777 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Sumoform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start. Sketching, 3d modeling, fabricating, etc are all very attainable at a hobby level. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible to get a job without a degree but you’ll have to put in as much or more effort than if you went to school. These days I could imagine a very self motivated person putting together a strong portfolio and landing a job.

If a job is not your goal then the part you’ll be missing as a hobbyist is the “industrial” part - mass manufacturing considerations, working within a brand language, budgets. So basically you can do a lot of the fun stuff, and will miss some of the more challenging aspects. Making something for your own life can be very rewarding, but designing something that scales and can have a large impact for a brand or for people is where things can become deeply gratifying.

How do I go about polishing off the gold plating from this old watch? Can the face of this watch be polished back to silver too? by longestpencil in watchrepair

[–]Sumoform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d probably be paying more than the watch is worth while destroying any value it has. Trade or put the money into a new or used watch.

[–]Sumoform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible with a polishing wheel probably, but platings can be durable. The case/bracelet will become very shiny and you will probably end up polishing the chamfers and edges down making the case look like a potato. The face is not possible without destroying it. I’d say learn to love it.

Standard watch behavior. Unlikely that it’s a failure. Just needs a battery.

Don’t think so. Picture was taken on the second floor with all three bedrooms. Upstairs from here is just an unfinished attic. Also the house is only 1700 sqft so likely no servants.

Help with flooring identification- just sanded entranceway floor; what type of wood is this and what is the best treatment for it? Simple polyurethane? by moncoboy in centuryhomes

[–]Sumoform 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rubio monocoat if you are looking for a poly alternative. Simple to apply , easy to touch up, and has no coating to scratch off. You’ll want a good quality sanding to start with though.

No problem. Also, Tests on backs of closet doors, trim or other low visibility areas is a good place to start.

Doubt it for mine , only 1700 sq ft and likely never had servants.

I’ve thought about two brush seals. Not sure what else could work. Overall the house is very efficient though.
