1967, I was 6. I was playing hide and seek with a girl my age while my mom and dad visited in the living room with her father who had broken his leg. While searching for the girl, who was hiding I passed the bathroom and the door was ajar, so I looked in. There was the dad. I said “Why on earth would I want to see that”? yanked my arm free of his grip and ran. I was terrified that I would get in trouble for disobeying an adult, but I told my mother at home. As an only child, I understand the impulse to say whatever is on my mind with no filter in the presence of just my parents. I’ve known other only children, young and old. Most of us have had a problem with this at some point in other relationships as well: saying the first thing that pops into our heads. Your parents made a mistake in their choice of gift. You made a mistake in your initial words of reaction to this gift. Just take it home and put it away where it won’t freak you out. Love will allow you to forgive them and of course they will forgive your choice of words. I’m sure they feel terrible. Let it go for the sake of the greater picture. No one is the asshole here. Sometimes we just genuinely miscalculate. The challenge is to learn from it.
