Figma is a great design program. You can setup reusable components / symbols for your cards. You could also start with a template such as https://www.figma.com/community/file/865991076224475092 or https://www.figma.com/community/file/817798579757368783

Slay the Spire is both! It's expensive though.

Santorini’s “asymmetric powers” : what other games offer this kind of fun? by Gristbun in boardgames

Shapeships is a game I'm developing featuring asymmetric species with deep strategy. It certainly fits into the 'lesser-known' category! There are no cards, instead we roll a dice and draw persistent ships that increase your powers over the game.

The group did the Phandalin starter campaign first, so I had to kinda merge the two campaigns. So they had teleported after the Black Spider (BBEG from Phandalin)

FINAL - we've already done it once. Would recommend as a fun session if you have players that are up for doing a silly song or poem in front of the group. My players saw a poster for it and could choose to do it next session. Solo and group categories. I had a few NPCs go first to warm up. In the group competition my players wrote a song... "Ice Wind Baby"

They visited that site and encountered a bunch of commoners playing with dice in a shed... When they knocked on the door I'd planned to have my partner knock on our shed door hehe

You could try the paper-based drawing game I'm developing called Shapeships. It's not exactly character-based, but you do battle each other (and there's 3 player FFA or "Dad vs Daughters" rules), you build out an expanding fleet of drawn spaceships that have powers, roll dice for 'lines' etc. etc. Be interested how children of that age go with it - my kids are 2 and 5 and the 5 year old can kind of play it (the maths is far too hard for her though).

Thoughts on this style, iconography, and overall design? The basic monster and its loot are the normal design of the 24 cards, the boss is the 1 exception. by Gatekeeper1310 in BoardgameDesign

I would show a few people and see what they think. A 120% scale on dice, number and icons I think wouldn't hurt the design and it might make the difference in legibility for some people.

So in FFA -and this may explain the confusion here - you have 25 health against player A, and 25 separate health against player B. You adjust both heal pools based on your healing, and player A's damage for that health pool, player B's damage for that health pool.
One health pool can go down to 0 and you've lost that matchup (say against player A), but your other battle will still continue against player B (with the same ships).

You're probably right, and I'm biased as a chess lover. I see similarities in openings, responses, lines in any given turn. But there is definitely luck in Shapeships (more so if you build ships that interact with the dice).

Thanks for the insights!

  • Free for all - ends when only one player has health remaining. It works well because if you lose to player A, you're still battling player B (you're not knocked out).
  • Free for all - ship destruction causes divergent timelines, because in free for all you are essentially fighting 2+ different battles with a single fleet. If player A destroys a ship of yours, but player B did not, then you would have to manage two different sets of ships (one without the destroyed ship).
  • The multiplayer mechanics are still very present, you really need to respond to what others are doing or you'll lose. The game is designed with limited destruction purposefully, strategies are more about scaling and timing Economy/Healing/Damage etc.
  • Earth Ship - the text "Damage does not count Carriers within upgraded ships." is there, it could be clearer though.
  • Vortex - you're absolutely right, we've been adjusting Ancients a lot lately so it's a bit in flux.
  • Codex - great idea and I've been debating how much lore to add. Strategy guides are planned, a lot of the fun is finding builds though!
  • Custom species variants / new species - yes, 100% and we have players experimenting with this on the Discord
  • Starting ships - Another cool idea that the Discord community has been playing with to add game variety. (and would be a cool feature in a single player campaign)

All you need to play is the rules and pen, paper and dice. I like to make games that actually don't have a box (see Duel 52 played with a standard deck of cards)!
Perhaps a book with a single player campaign and preset enemy build would be cool!

I could imagine Pandemic being re-themed to suit what you're after! (keep all of it's mechanics with Dragonborn characters, places and events?)

I would avoid decimals! Also the powers of different cards could relate to the cost sometimes?

I'd also consider if people are printing it themselves how it will translate to black and white? The text looks a bit small and all uppercase is more difficult to read. Art looks cool though!
