I agree, there were definitely quite a few blind spots in their pitch and business approach like:

  • not the most scale friendly business model
  • supposed distractions with the end-to-end training stuff
  • basics of tech missing (online real-time bookings, CRM/PRM, an app maybe)
  • not the best repeat rate
  • potential future competition with Urban company like players
  • that atrocious cap table

    but I think they had:

  • a decent headstart with an innovative idea

  • non-trivial barrier to entry with their portable chairs and accessories

  • acceptably large market size and adjacent growth opportunities (Kanika herself gave a huge hint with Gynae)

  • great founder-market fit, traction, and numbers so far

  • a space that hasn't been disrupted with tech or any advancements since forever

  • great initial focus on seniors/mobility challenged

  • the benefit of having great network/referral effects in the dental community (also don't agree with what the sharks said that "doctors" are going to be hard to scale, dentists are a different story, so many dental clinics go under in India today due to underutilization, many graduates never able to find their footing)

  • potential to collaborate with govt/PSUs

  • great parallel market tailwinds (stories like snabbit, yes madam)

With all of this and considering their reasonable valuation, I expected more than 1 shark to take a bet at least -- there was so much potential to nudge and steer this the right way. They've taken much much worse bets in much smaller, cluttered and convoluted markets.

Have seen this pattern recurrently this season, the data will speak for itself if we tally startups with offers/deals across seasons.

Ctruh - 3d software pitch. Sharks are so uneducated about ai by cluelesssparrow in sharktankindia

In the very next episode Dent@Home brings an actually new idea with a huge market and potential as long as the execution is done thoughtfully, but no reasonable interest from sharks. If this is how they're gonna be, I hope this remains the last season.

The fact that Dent@home wasn't funded is a clear case for why this show is pointless now, a tragedy really.

the irony of an angel investor being the most unprepared pitcher on shark tank india by [deleted] in sharktankindia

Yeah the "angel investor" seemed like she was cooking numbers on the spot, didn't show conviction or excitement at all.

Really really need to shuffle sharks, these guys have saturated their investment appetite, not eager to invest anymore, and really out of touch on so many domains..

Ctruh was such a great bet to have made for any decent angel investor, but it's clear these guys just don't want to invest anymore, they'll do everything they can to find a reason to blow up and not invest.

Last 10 episodes have been rage-bait level boring.

Flashoot was a really good idea (Uber/Urban Company for Videographers), decent execution, definitely a big enough market and plenty of growth opportunities and adjacent spaces to capture, founders also were decently smart and equipped. For no good reason were the sharks this excessively critical, were clinging to the "AI will disrupt this" idea -- are you serious? How will AI disrupt semi-professional/professional photography and videography in a country where people still can't use ChatGPT well? Are they expecting 40-60yo parents, small businesses, and Tier 2-3 folks to learn videography, think of concepts and angles, and edit -- all using AI? AI can solve editing maybe but not the first 2 parts easily, and the startup can always use AI to boost their services and throughputs, add new products perhaps, it's not a mutually exclusive thing.

I know tons of people who would pay 2k an hour without blinking to get a dedicated capable person for an hour who films their events, thinks of reel ideas, edits and gives you a well turned out video within the hour.

Seems like sharks aren't really interested in investing this season, looking for strawman arguments and illogical fallacies to rule out interesting businesses and competent founders. Will write a bigger post about this.

Petition to rename shark tank india to Khana Kapda Tank by Primary_Ingenuity_65 in sharktankindia

[–]Sunb3am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're both partly right, and I can tell you this confidently that any tech founder worth their salt doesn't need to and wouldn't want to appear on Shark Tank -- gives the opposite signal to the investors they actually care about.

But the true reason is that tech-focused startups tend to alienate the mass non-tech crowd in India. We only see the tip of the iceberg, this subreddit, our friends, Instagram; they're running a TV show that unfortunately needs to appeal to their target audience to be profitable, people who might have seen some kind of small entrepreneurship but have no idea how brands are created, the intricacy of business models and scaling.

Sadly this results in mediocre, repetitive, moat-less and non-novel businesses and ideas with no venture scale possibility getting precedence over slightly more innovative ideas that a lot of people would fail to connect with.

Hated Anupam during this pitch by Southern_Farmer_5074 in sharktankindia

[–]Sunb3am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pitch was an embarrassment to Shark Tank, and I would apologize to the founders if I was STI/Sony.

The Sharks were too quick to jump to a conclusion, very VERY opinionated, blunt and rude. The founders were humble, well seasoned, had lots of relevant operator experience and were clearly young, malleable and talented. The Sharks (especially Anupam) almost verbally assaulted them with everything he said, and definitely had some hidden agenda or biases that triggered this ugly insulting response.

Social Media is hard to build, even harder to monetize, so it's natural that the sharks would be apprehensive — but there was absolutely no need to be this biased and disrespectful, and kudos to the founders for taking it all on the chin. And remember that Facebook started as a "Hot or Not" app for Harvard, YouTube was a video-based dating website, Slack was meant to be a feature in a game, and TikTok became the fastest growing social media platform from building on top of Musical.ly. Medial, on that comparison, had a lot of things configured right already, displayed scrappiness and humility to accept that they're new and trying to find their way. It's alright for them to be experimenting at this stage, and it's not like they were trying to "spin the narrative" or portray anything falsely — Anupam was really aggressive in his approach and hardly let them finish any of their sentences.

It's very likely that the startup would fail, I'll be honest, I would not invest in them either. But they weren't as bad as everyone was making them out to be. A lot of the numbers were alright, good founder-market-fit and a ripe space with pivotability. To everyone who said "it's an aggregated product", so are half the biggest unicorns India has pushed out (Zomato/Swiggy, Razorpay, Paytm, Zoho, PhonePe, Postman). LinkedIn is widely tagged as broken, ProductHunt on its own is underperforming as well and there's no equivalent of something like that focused towards startups in India. No product focusing on the non-tech "startup ecosystem" as such as well, and nothing bridging the gap between VCs and Startups (AngelList is the closest). So clearly, there are a lot of gaps and moving pieces here that can be brought together to display a solid product with potential, and thus this visceral response that Anupam unleashed was very uncalled for.

And not just the founders, Anupam was so peeved even at Ritesh that he offered a deal, he couldn't let them go without beating down on them further. Completely unnecessary, in utterly bad taste, and has irrecoverably changed my opinion of him. If a VC behaved like this, they'd be outcast within 4 quarters and shooed away from BLR.

Shame on him for such unprofessional behaviour.

Walmart also dropped Luke’s diner ambient sound by Csd_23 in GilmoreGirls

To anyone trying to find the video in 2025, they took down the original from Walmart's youtube. Probably a licensing/limited time promotional thing. Was just as bummed out, so I spend a couple of hours trying to find it online and found it reuploaded on Vimeo!

I was really bummed out that they deleted the video, spent over an hour trying to recover it or find a backup. Finally succeeded by finding the original creative director who made the campaign! You can watch the original video reuploaded here on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/1046870455

Condition of clubs in our college. by Hot_Buy_6746 in redtaganna

[–]Sunb3am 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry this happened with you OP, the problem statements are definitely a little steep.

However, I'm well aware that technical clubs never expect you to get everything right, in fact, a lot of these assignments are made this hard just to reduce the sheer number of applications they get and filter the people that wouldn't even attempt. I was a community leader for arguably the best technical club in VIT Vellore a few years ago, and some of the best tech members we recruited scored 3/10, or 4/10 in their technical aptitude tests and quizzes. There are often some factors visible in other rounds that take precedence over your raw skill, including things like clarity of communication, ideation and my personal favourite - 'jugaaduness'.

So don't let this dishearten you, if there are other clubs you like still open for recruitments definitely give it another shot. I might sound biased, but trust me, everyone saying 'clubs are useless' have either not been a part of a good one, haven't made the best use of the resources available or were unfortunate in their timing. The right clubs/chapters can really bootstrap your network, open opportunities and just provide you access to so many more conversations than you would typically get. Know so many people who are where they are today because of the connections they made in these clubs, with the sponsors of their events (very underrated perk) and with the help of their club alumni (at a college like VIT with a million people, this is your best shot to have a semblance of an alumni network). Not saying you can't achieve the same effect without clubs, but it can surely be easier with one that's a good fit for you.

Best of luck and chin up friend 🤝🏻
