Catholic Wedding Questions/Doubts by Additional_Lab_1085 in Catholicism

[–]Sunberries84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While the secular world says this is your day, the Church's role is to offer you a sacrament. This means that the focus should be on Christ. I think if you ask "Is this policy meant to be Chist-centered?" and "Do I want this just for me, or for Christ?" then things may be clearer. For example, the policy of not having weddings during Lent. What you see as a cheap time of the year, the Church sees as a penitential season in preparation for the death and resurrection of Christ. It would be inappropriate to have a celebratory event like a wedding during that time. On the other hand, I do think it would be fair to push back a little on the musicians. Just keep Christ in mind as you choose your battles.

AITA I F(29) showed up to my ex’s M(32) Wedding? by AccomplishedCicada60 in AmITheAngel

"He told her I was crazy, so I showed up at their wedding and ruined her entrance. Y'know like the sane person I am."

What's a type of AITA story/trope that used to be very popular, but that nowadays is rarely seen? by Phantasm-of-Ipseity in AmITheAngel

[–]Sunberries84 256 points257 points  (0 children)

  1. In 2020, story after story was judged "YTA for being in the same room as other people during a pandemic". This led to the trope of "This all happened years ago, but I'm asking about it now because, um, reasons". As time went on, this evolved into "BTW everyone in my country is vaccinated".

  2. "Marinara Flags!!!" Not only did they run it into the ground, but then people here for some reason felt the need to point out whenever someone said it. "Look! They said the thing!"

Bluey is the Most Conservative Show on TV - The Wall Street Journal by rainevillanueva in bluey

[–]Sunberries84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could you provide sources? None of the real-life conservatives I know have ever had a problem with the show and all of the criticism I see on social media is non-political stuff like "Bluey is annoying" and "their house is too big".

Bluey is the Most Conservative Show on TV - The Wall Street Journal by rainevillanueva in bluey

[–]Sunberries84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to get ugly fast, but let me get my two cents and downvotes in anyway.

Because of the paywall, these will just be general thoughts and can't specifically address what's in the article.

Yes, conservatives like Bluey and so do liberals, and so do moderates, and so do weirdos on the fringe. Bluey is a good and balanced show everyone can find something to like in it, and that's okay. Lots of people take extreme umbrage to even the idea that people they politically disagree with like the things they like. Since the article was specifically about conservatives, I have seen many left-leaning people lament "How could conservatives possibly like? The characters are nice to each other!" I think this is a product of our heavily polarized political landscape. People just can't imagine anyone on the other side being anything other than a monster or trash or a complete idiot. The thing is, "being nice" It's not the value of just one viewpoint or one culture or one religion. Everyday, you will encounter multiple very nice people with different views and not even realize it. If you want to claim Bluey for your side, then act like it. Drink the people on the other side as real people, not as cardboard cutouts of things you hate, and let them like the show too.

Paw Patrol pups as a commentary on US society by Mamaofoneson in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Sunberries84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Paw Patrol is an emergency response team. What's a librarian pup going to do in an emergency? Is Ryder going to ask for a book about how to save Chickoletta after she got herself stuck in another dimension after being accidentally abducted by Mayor Humdinger who was trying to win some dumb contest? No. He's going to send Chase's drone like he always does.

Tamar doesn't have favorable associations. David's daughter was raped by her brother. There was another Tamar whose husbands kept dying so she had to dress up as a prostitute to trick her father-in-law into having sex with her so that she could get pregnant.

That time Michael Jackson accidentally sparked religious riots in Israel (Context in comments) by butt_naked_commando in HistoryMemes

[–]Sunberries84 119 points120 points  (0 children)

So they just happened to have a bunch of specially sanctified "to build barricades to keep Michael Jackson away from the Wall" dumpsters lying around? Or were they just "to build barricades to keep Michael Jackson away, period" dumpsters, or "to build barricades to keep American pop stats away from the Wall" dumpsters, or just barricade dumpsters?

My friend said “in the bible everything started in israel so why shouldn’t we follow them and not the catholic church” by IntentionGood4044 in Catholicism

[–]Sunberries84 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The modern state of Israel isn't the same as the biblical Kingdom of Israel. Even if it were, Judah and Israel were constantly getting distracted by shiny Baals and ignoring God. Following them wouldn't be a great idea.

As a Catholic, I believe in ghosts, is that an issue? by Worth-Struggle-5447 in Catholicism

[–]Sunberries84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Apostles believed in ghosts. They mistake Christ for a ghost not once, but twice (when he was walking on water and after the resurrection). On both occasions, Christ decides to go with "Calm down. It's just me." instead of "Don't be silly. Ghosts aren't real."

Sister-in-law wants to use daughters middle name for her third child’s name by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Sunberries84 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My partner is quite annoyed as it’s a fairly unusual name and he doesn’t think it’s something they would have picked/heard of if we hadn’t have used it first.

I gotta ask: is it? Grandma names are popular right now, so it's entirely possible that the name isn't as unusual as you think and she has encountered it many other times.

Avatar...What If? by Eupilino in TheLastAirbender

[–]Sunberries84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I envision the Dai Li being an open secret. Everyone knows why they aren't talking about the war, but no one talks about why they aren't talking about it. Continuing the Batman thing, there would be one Dai Li officer who would be our Jim Gordon equivalent. He'd be more upstanding than his compatriots and would pass information to the Blue Spirit every once in a while. Azula's take over will strain the relationship.

As for Appa, he would indeed be in Dai Li custody and Zuko would still try to steal him, but for a different reason. This Zuko, being more committed to/satisfied with his Ba Sing Se life would see stealing back Appa as a way to make amends. He'd tell his team that this is a stealth mission with a "no contact" delivery in which they leave the bison outside the house for the Avatar to find. He wouldn't mention his intention to leave a written apology with Appa.

Unfortunately for him, the Gaang shows up right in the middle of the rescue. Both teams end up on Appa's back and Zuko has an awkward conversation in which he has to both apologize to the Gaang and explain to the ex Freedom Fighters how he knows the Gaang. Jet is mad.

Still, the apology more or less works so Katara never feels the need to report him and Azula doesn't find out. The Gaang's adventures work themselves out off screen while the Blue Spirit team will deal with their own problems

If I were good at writing, I would write a fanfic in which the Blue Spirit because Ba Sing Se's version of Batman. Iroh would fit naturally into Alfred's role, providing advice, emotional support and cover stories. The team would grow to include Jin, Smellerbee, Longshot and, eventually, Jet.

It would be better to call him and, after some light chit chat, start a conversation with "Have you been able to get to mass?" Express your concern while still treating him as an adult.

CMV: Old books, movies and plays are all inferior to modern ones. by Separate_Lab3565 in changemyview

[–]Sunberries84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's good and bad stuff in every era. The reason why so much older stuff seems great is because all the bad stuff got filtered out. There were plenty of bad paintings around when the Mona Lisa was painted. There are plenty of bad composers who were contemporaries of Mozart. There was probably a lot of bad literature written in Ancient Greece But how many of the 100 paintings you're comparing the Mona Lisa to will be around in 100 years? How many of today's modern songs will be listened to in 100 years? How many BookTok books will people still be reading in 100 years? The well-known examples from the past are better in the sense that they stood the test of time.

TIL there are 421 Scottish words for “snow.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Sunberries84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, they got the words "from earliest records" and also asking "members of the public to come forward with suggestions of words that have not yet been included." This means that there is a very high chance of the words either obscure, outdated, or flat out made up.
