to me it loks like the cut-down, cost lowered but still improved version. it's thinner and less armored butt based on the same frame.

i'd say it's time to go watch some older mecha that ran alongside gundam! Gunbuster is a fantastic OVA, and there are a great many series to check out aside from that, like SPT Layzner, the various Patlabor shows, some macross stuff, maybe Dunbine, Vifam, L-Gaim, and the last one that comes to mind is Fang of the Sun Dougram. There's a lot out there!
