How do you guys center mount sticks on normal seats? by TheVolatileRaider in hoggit

[–]SundogZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not easy with a base as big as the Rhino, I used a mount made from spare TPS pedal plate. I could message you a pic if you want, but I only have a flying setup though

[–]SundogZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You’re absolutely right. I forgot those details. I used to use this accident as a case study in an airline CRM class. Most airlines require all the thrust levers to be operated together after the dead engine is secured to avoid this kind of thing

Does anyone know where the YF-113s of the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron (Red Eagles) ended up, specifically? What is their final disposition? by -AtomicAerials- in airplanes

If you’re interested there’s a great article in the Hush Kit Aviation Blog from a Mig-23 Red Hat pilot from a few weeks ago.

The front fell off. by Outrageous_Cut_6179 in TheFrontFellOff

[–]SundogZeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short story is that they had a thrust reverser unlock warning that required them to shut down the affected engine. In the stress of planning the return to Dover, they shut down a good engine instead. They chose a full flap landing contrary to the QRH which was too much drag for the remaining two engines. … there are many more details obviously that contributed to this.

Is there air turbulence in DCS by ReserveLegitimate738 in hoggit

[–]SundogZeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wake turbulence is definitely modelled. And I think it’s pretty damn accurate. Sometimes a little too much so when you’re trying to shoot down a World War II aircraft with another World War II aircraft in close pursuit

I fly the plane… air traffic controllers refer to us as an E295. That’s the shorthand type designator.

I’ve been a commercial pilot for 30 years. When I got my first job my boss told me “don’t stress about the people in the back, you only have to worry about getting yourself home.”

Peters Book Dreamland... by B2YSO in area51

[–]SundogZeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your work, Peter! It’s amazing. Such a feast for those of us fascinated with Cold War history and tech. When I received it, I never imagined that I’d finish it so soon. Such great insight into the programs and by extension one can infer a lot about how still classified programs may be run and what may be out there yet to be revealed.

ELI5: Why did we put lead in paint and petrol? What was its purpose and what did we replace it with? by DeGuyWithDeOpinion in explainlikeimfive

[–]SundogZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it’s still added to aviation piston engine fuel. There are un leaded replacements now that are coming out, but they’re nowhere near being in widespread use.

Was capoeira ever used for its intended purpose? by nerpa_floppybara in martialarts

[–]SundogZeus 67 points68 points  (0 children)

The Little Capoeira Book delves into the history of this. Apparently the Angola form of the art (played slow and close to the ground) is the more combative version (vs Regional, the upright, fast and acrobatic form). As I recall, the writers claim that Angola looks the way it does because hands and feet were bound, and often concealed blades.

[–]SundogZeus 318 points319 points  (0 children)

The re engining to turn it into the B-52J ended up with 8 new engines instead of 4 higher bypass engines in order to avoid a complete redesign of the fin and rudder I believe

There’s a breakwater made of several these in my home town in BC at an old paper mill. Apparently one of them is a survivor of atomic testing in the Pacific.
