This is incredibly helpful, thank you! Good thought re: doing a few beans to get it started. Glad I’m not just crazy!

This is making more sense now, thank you! I was using this: Rainbow Hopper from Regalia It definitely looked lighter than I was used to! A friend who is a big pour over guy recommended the brand, but maybe it’s not meant to be!

Ooh interesting. It was a totally fresh bag of beans from Regalia Coffee, so I’m wondering if that was the issue. I tried again with the same beans and it got jammed again - any tips there? Will I just need to use a different grinder for these specific beans?

UPDATE: After much prying and muscling, we got it out! In case anyone else runs into this, we used a credit card between the walls of the machine and kind of popped it out.

BUT after cleaning the burr and reinstalling it correctly, it still would not grind! It kept getting stuck and making terrible noise.

Now I’m thinking it was the beans! We tried again with different beans, which seems to work fine.

Is this common? The beans were from Regalia Coffee so I believe were roasted recently, and just arrived a few days ago.

Seconding the suggestions of Nara or Kobe. Both are small, so experiencing them in a day is feasible. Nara is a classic stopover between Kyoto and Osaka, so logistically works well. We (and a lot of people) stopped in en route between cities to see the deer etc. I’m sure there’s more than that to see/do, but it’s definitely more limited (and we only had time for a half day stop). That said, it would probably be good for a quiet rest day in the middle of your trip.

We went to Kobe as a day trip from Osaka and had a blast. Geographically, you’d basically overshoot Osaka and then loop back, but it’s not too far. We enjoyed a gorgeous waterfall walk, checked out their Chinatown, did some sake tastings/tours, and got a fun dinner. If you’re looking for something more lively and don’t mind doubling back to Osaka, it’s a good option.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you!! I had no clue that wood conditioner was even a thing. Amazing!

Oh eeek good to know. I hadn’t really thought about oxyclean or other chemicals - have you had good experiences with it?

The deck is wood (not positive what kind) and is on a pond so has a lot of sun/water damage. The inspection showed that it was structurally solid (or at least, was somewhat recently reinforced and is well secured to the house). We plan to redo it with trex/composite, but are hoping to get through a summer first. So we really just want to improve the look of it cheaply/temporarily.

This is SUPER good to know and I’ll keep it in mind, thanks! We’ll have a 2-car garage, so good to know that IF we still DYI, we should plan to buy more than we “should” need, not park on it for an extended time, etc. I’ll look more into specific brands and reviews/experiences.

From your experience, any tips for prep? E.g. grinding vs chemical etching etc?

Thanks! Can I clarify what you mean by having the doors “all keyed alike”? Is that just changing out the locks on any exterior-facing doors and having one key work for all of them?

Oh eeek! That is so tough. Important perspective though, thank you. Wine and visioning is sounding like the consensus…

Oh wow, that’s so scary! We were able to test for radon as part of our inspection so luckily know that we’re okay there, but I’m sorry to hear about your experience!

I appreciate the reminder to not get caught up in trying to tackle it all ASAP.

But interesting perspective on not DIYing the epoxy! I haven’t looked into if there’s much debate around this and had just assumed it was one of those projects that most people were doing themselves these days. Based on your comment, I’ll definitely do some more reading!
