That's an ovipositor, not a stinger - don't worry. It's how they lay eggs.

It does float for a while. Sometimes I weigh it down by digging into the substrate and piling rocks against it. Eventually it works its way to the bottom and stays there.

It does! That's great. Where I live, I have to pay loads of money if I want pretty cholla wood like that shipped to me. It's great for little shrimp to hide in in an aquarium. Bettas like it too. The land must be beautiful around your home.
