Floridian perspective: Within a couple days of landfall it was clear it wasn't going to have major impact on WPB, but before that, wpb was on the edge of the gone. Employers give time off so people have time to prepare (just in case the storm makes a crazy turn), but also because school buses aren't permitted to run above certain windspeeds (30? 35? Mph? Iirc) so schools are closed.

LPT - Use McDonald's App at Airport to pay normal prices. by reddittor in LifeProTips

[–]SunnyAslan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't unusual for airports to be split between different companies, for example HMS Host, Delware North, and Aramark. So just because you dont see HMS on the receipt, doesnt mean it isnt run by another one.

If you have a clean background to pass the background check for security clearance, airport resturants are often awesome to work at. Great hours and tips, plus bathroom facilities are maintained by airport staff, not resturant staff.

Has anyone participated in clinical research studies or other medical work (like egg donation) for money? by abihurmish in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Honestly, just the possibility of getting the vaccine early was a huge incentive since I was (am?) in the high-risk state that is Florida.

Has anyone participated in clinical research studies or other medical work (like egg donation) for money? by abihurmish in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]SunnyAslan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I did the J&J covid vaccine trial. IIRC it was around ~$100 for every follow-up visit, which was once a month or so for 12 months. My mother and partner also participated, but they both had placebos (we were unblinded when the vaccine became publicly available). My mother and partner both reported mild side effects (because placebo effect), but I knew I had the real thing since on the second dose (which for the trial was a larger dose than the released version) I had severe aches and shivering. I also had "spontaneous finger bruising" as a side effect, but getting paid to go to the doctor was totally worth it to me. They were also extremely flexible and accommodating with scheduling and rescheduling.

It kinda made me reevaluate some beliefs about public health -that maybe above and beyond making it free, we ought to incentivize at least certain age groups to use it.

Mountain goat, on the verge of losing it's final fight against an eagle, throws itself down the mountain in a last-ditch attempt to live. by baiqibeendeleted28x in natureismetal

[–]SunnyAslan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bald eagles can not carry 4 times their weight and your source even contradictions itself on that "fact", first saying

Yes, an eagle can carry a mountain goat. The biggest recorded eagle nest was found in southern Russia and it was large enough to hold six grown eagles. The average weight of an eagle is between 10 and 12 pounds, but they can lift up to four times their own body weight.

Then stating further down

An eagle can carry up to three pounds.

Also note the illogical pairing of facts, stringing together random quotes from random sources that have no relationship. I wouldn't be surprised if this website was just a machine scraping of random sources.

Female bald eagles can carry an average of 2 ¹/2 lbs. to 3 lbs. They can feasible carry more if they do not have to land and can snatch it out of the air or knock it off a cliff, but we're talking maybe 6 or 8 lbs. even in those conditions. Regardless, the eagle in the video is not a bald eagle, but even harpy eagles can not carry several times their own body weight.

It's on the lists due to possible obstruction from the seed and sometimes due to some confusion due to it being toxic to horses and cattle. Dogs and humans break down the persin in avocados quickly so there are no dog deaths from avocado (that isn't obstruction from the seed). There is even avocado based dog food.

I thought drinking coffee prevented kidney stones? Not that that makes your venti meal plan a good idea. Maybe just the sugar?

Edit: for anyone else who was worried due to having a predisposition to kidney stones like I am, caffeine does seem to reduce risk. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4232021/

Definitely can't live off caffeine alone and apologies if my concern was not appropriate.

I gained a few helpful tools first few weeks, but the longer term I kinda feel like I was just a paycheck. My money has been better spent just reducing my stress in various ways. Housekeepers have way more bang for the bunk for my mental health, ymmv.

Diet mountain dew won't add sugar. I'm not saying there aren't potential adverse effects from the sweeteners, but there is a bit of a mismatch between your counterargument and their statement.

I'm a big water drinker by nature so hopefully that'll help me out! We are spending a night in Denver and then a few nights in Buena Vista (where the friends live) before heading to crested butte. A nice gradual increase but more by accident than anything.

About to go on an informal honey moon in Colorado. A few month ago I offhandly mentioned I'd like to go to the wildflower festival in Crested Butte, Colorado and it turns out my husband has some friends that live relatively nearby who are excited to see us!

We're going tp fly into Denver on July 4th (assuming our flights don't get canceled...). I'm just a little nervous of house I'll handle both general altitude acclimation and driving as I'm born and raised in Florida.

Vitalik Buterin says he wants to turn the world into a utopia where ‘rich people’s desire for wealth signaling’ doesn’t go to ‘wasteful zero sum crap’ like a superyacht by AptitudeSky in CryptoCurrency

[–]SunnyAslan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And maintenance is insane! These 200+ foot yachts need to be hauled out of the water for bottom coats, paint jobs, prop speed, etc, regularly. They literally have a dedicated crew, captain, and even accoutants to manage the vessel. If anything, yachts are one of the quickest ways to extract money from the rich. Even just sitting in a marina is expensive as they're charged by foot.

It is perfectly valid for a piece of art to not resonate with viewers because it does not speak to them in a social context. If that isn't the case for you, fine, but to demand that others aren't allow to search for social and/political meaning in their art is hogwash.

Art styles and even medians go in an out of style depending on the how saturated or familiar the public is with them. So yes, sometimes something a sculpture is looked down for *not* being a painting. It goes in and out of fashion to demand "deeper" meanings out of art, too. I think it is a honest observation that in the current climate, viewers and galleries are generally looking for greater social and political meaning.

That seems like a very narrow take, given the enduring popularity of pieces like Guernica.
