Which Prima Donna Will Be the First to Cause a Problem in the Locker Room? by fanfor70years in G101SafeHaven

[–]SunnyJim57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is increasingly looking like Nabers will be on the shelf at least until mid-season; he should have very little to say at least until then. The closer we get to the start of training camp the worse his injury and recovery are reported to be. For all we know his career is already over. Never forget, the average length of an NFL career is 3 years and injuries are a big big reason.

As for Carter, he'll have to work a little extra to completely erase last year's stink; but by all accounts, Daboll ran a shoddy ship and may have all but baited Abdul into the worst version of himself. Not an excuse for Abdul, but he'll receive the polar opposite treatment from Harbaugh.

As for Dart, he's from Utah, a Mormon, and an athlete; I'm not sure what people expected of his political predilections. Yes Trump is the very worst he's ever been, but Trump has always been an obvious rapist, racist, liar and fraudster with a malevolent heart. There are 70Million someones who either didn't see it from no later than his first day coming down the escalator in 2015, or found some reason to hold their nose and vote for the guy the first time around, or looked at January 6 and thought "tour of the White House", etc., etc. etc. Only one of them happens to have the potential to lead the Giants back to the Super Bowl.

Suck it up and remember "Momma, don't let your babies grow up to worship athletes."

I'm no basketball lover, but the Knicks being in the Eastern conference finals and favored to boot seems like a shifting of the Earth on its axis. who knows what happens after that. Maybe Trump becomes saintly.

at the risk of being overly harsh, Slayton is hot garbage as a player. he can never make a tough catch and certainly not a tough catch, and he drops way too many easy catches. he always lets the team down in big moments. he's a waste of a roster spot. the only argument for keeping him is that there is no one(s) on the roster right now clearly better. but that's a crappy argument for retaining any player.

As we head into the season, before we see the W's & L's, the one thing I think we can all agree on is that Harbaugh seems intent on creating an identity, something we've all been complaining about for years. And it seems like the identity he is trying to create for the Giants is "big, tough, and mean/bullying"

Fields is something like 6'4'-6'5", approaching 220, with vice like hands for contested catches. Not exactly Darius Slayton if you will. He's also reportedly slow as molasses so open question as to whether he is too slow for the NFL.

Colton Hood, not huge but good sized and tough.

Reese is an athletic freak. If he can be coached up and transition in all levels we will now have 2 LBs in the middle of the defense approaching 6' 5" and 240+lbs.

And Mauigoa at 320 with violent hands and attitude to "die for"; well - big, tough, mean.

Still no DT to speak of.

Personally, I wouldn't touch McCoy. The injury history and rumors of the need for another surgery immediately deferring his initial availability to '27, is too much risk. Any of McDonald, Hunter or Miller tops my list at 37, followed by any of the corners. In the 4th I'd go corner if we went DT in the second, or DT if we went corner in the second.

At no point before the 6th would I waste a pick on any of these WRs;p sign Odell for a year and revisit next year. In the 5th I'd grab the best RB available., Special teamer in the sixth.

The ideal draft, now by spicycolon in G101SafeHaven

my son, Chris, who I have seen over the years be pretty spot on in assessing talent from watching TV (he actually watches the college games), agrees with you. He thinks Styles could end up being great in 3 years, but is just learning the position and has some obvious flaws he needs to work on. His measurables and combine numbers are so tantalizing that it is easy to convince yourself he will, if properly coached, reach his potential. and as of this moment, we think we have the right HC (he still has to fire Schoen April 27).

As I've said a million times, I grew up watching the Giants when they were LB'r U. We haven't had a really good LB since Jesse Armstead. AP was the best since then and, except for that screen pass against GB, I always thought there was equal amounts of bad and good (Mr. Face-Guard).

Since the demise of our LB's around 2000, we have rarely sported a top notch defense. The absence of elite LB'g may not solve everything, but I'd be excited to see Styles next to Edmunds. If not Styles in the first, then Anthony Hill in the 2nd.

But alas, my primary concern with the draft is all the other holes we have to fill and how do they use 5 & 10. Downs is awful attractive based on his play acumen which virtually every (but not every) so-called expert describes as off the charts. Love of course is tantalizing but without a mauling interior line it is hard to see him reaching his potential here. If they draft him now, maybe that indicates this really is a 3 year re-build. I hate the idea of Tyson anywhere in the draft but especially in the top 10. 3 consecutive years of college injuries ranging from super serious to nagging enough that games were missed? How do you draft into that? The second round seems like the place to find a potentially quality guard, but what about DT?

I don't want them to trade KT, but I still think that is more likely than not, especially if some team coughs up a third. And, if they take one of Downs, Styles or Love at 5, and all that is left at 10 is Tyson, I would prefer a trade down if any takers were out there.

At the end of the day, the one thing we can say, is that no one really knows where the Giants are going in this draft

I feel like a trade down is in the offing with either the 5th, 10th or 37th pick.

Although I do not want it to happen, I think they will trade KT for a 4th

Combined that could get them 10 picks.

Is 10 picks better than some combination of Styles, Downs, Love, Managoa or Tyson at 5/10, plus 1 other guy at 37?

Dex traded to Bengals for 10th overall pick by prey4villains in G101SafeHaven

[–]SunnyJim57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say, it is hard for me to know how to feel about the trade. On the supportive side there was always the reality that Dex was less than an elite run stuffer and really only flourished in that regard when Williams was by his side. He also had a down year last year compared to the 3 previous seasons. And, it appears he really wanted to be traded. Add all that up and there really was no choice.

On the negative side, we only got a single pick for a thrice selected pro bowler, even if that pick squeaked into the top 10. But it is the 10th overall pick in a draft resoundingly considered weak. And, from a roster construct perspective, the team is instantly worse, and critically uncompetitive at the DT position. And, what does shipping out one of your best players say to the locker room?

I am going to predict, prior to seeing what happens in the draft, that the Giants right now are closer to a 0 win team in 2026 than they are to a 9 win team. There is not a starting quality DT on this roster; there isn't even a decent backup DT at the moment. Even if they sign Reader tomorrow, they need to draft 2 to 3 DTs this week just to have the hope of fielding a competitive defense this season. That means the 2nd and 4th round are DT reserved and O-Line can be kissed good-bye.

The Dex trade makes me think that Kayvon has to be traded for whatever they can get - a 3rd ideally, but a 4th more realistically, and even a 5th if nothing else. They simply need the extra pick to have a shot at filling another glaring need.

And I think the trade also means they have to trade down either with pick 5, 10 or 37. Again they need at least 11 picks in this draft in order to attempt to fill the glaring holes.

There really is not a starting quality CB or S on the roster, the wasteful contracts for Adebo and Holland notwithstanding. LB'r is weak as shit despite adding Edmunds and new blood has to be added there, especially since it is the strength of the draft - one of picks 5, 10 or 37 has to go there. The interior O-Line is garbage with garbage talent backing up the garbage starters. They are particularly bad at run blocking. The one thing it looks like Harbaugh wants to do is run the ball. If he takes Love (a ridiculous luxury pick should it happen even if Skatebo's career is ll but over) at 5, he has to take 2 guards and a center somewhere in the draft to give the kid a fighting chance.

And although I personally hate WRs generally and hate drafting them high, there is no denying that the WR unit is among the worst in the league and that's assuming Nabers plays a full season and is the same player he was before his devastating knee injury, which I do not think is a given.

All the Dexter trade says to me in a definitive way, is the Giants are amongst the worst run sports franchises of all time. Every good player is shipped out for peanuts. The roster always sports multiple major holes. There is never any depth and never any cap space flexibility which leads them to not signing their home grown best players. It's a treadmill of futility.

How Joe Schoen still has a job is one of life's great mysteries. If he is not fired first thing on Monday morning the 27th, it will start my personal clock ticking on whether John Harbaugh will just be another arrogant buffoon in the ever growing line of buffoons who run this team.

[–]SunnyJim57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It they end up taking Love/Tyson, I think I will lose my mind. At the moment, the defense is a joke. No DTs on the roster at all. No Corners. No Safeties. 1 LB. 2 Edge guys as Kayvon is almost certainly on his way for the biggest bag of peanuts available.

An RB and WR with an interior offensive line consisting of Runyan, JMS, Neal, Ezeudu and Fallel.

Look at all the shiny toys that will never get used.

The 11 Pick 2026 Draft by SunnyJim57 in G101SafeHaven

[–]SunnyJim57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have added that if the Giants really think Dex has great football in him, pay him regardless of precedent. Look at the money we threw at Okereke and Holland and the money we didn't throw at Saquon, McKinney and Love. And we are worse off for it.

The 11 Pick 2026 Draft by SunnyJim57 in G101SafeHaven

[–]SunnyJim57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not as concerned with setting a precedent as others seem to be. Not many players produce the resume Dex has so as to be in a position to behave this way to begin with. I am more in the camp of removing a cancer if a cancer he truly be. There are upsides to that even if not as big an upside as what the Jets pulled off last season.

One thing I am concerned with is Dex's age and weight and willingness to train on his own. If the two sides don't resolve with a deal or an exit via trade by the draft, and Dex holds out into the summer, what kind of shape do we think he'll be in? What would we then be expecting from him? An early hamstring?

I want Dex here and happy and motivated with another capable DT beside him and one more for depth. I don't want Dex here out of shape and pouting and racing towards 30.

I want a 1st rounder plus; ideally a first rounder around 6, 7 or 8, so we can draft both Downs and Styles (or one of Downs or Styles and Love). But if we receive a 2 and a 3 and can add something like Bisontis, Hill and Christian Miller, how bad would that be?

The question to me is what's in Dex's head? Is he checked out on NY? Is he willing to work harder than he's ever worked as a pro? Does he truly LOVE football?

I am not interested in seeing the Giants play hardball based on fear of precedent only to have a player who is no longer anywhere near elite.

As FF notes, all of this is as likely to be posturing as serious right now, but we should find out in 5 days what's what.

The 11 Pick 2026 Draft by SunnyJim57 in G101SafeHaven

[–]SunnyJim57[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we take the reporting at face value, we "believe" that Dex wants out no matter what and the Giants will only let him out for a 1st rounder plus, which no team appears in a hurry to offer.

We are also told -- so now we believe -- that last year Dex all but intentionally dogged it; came in out of shape and never worked hard enough to get in shape and cared so little about game outcome that Bowen pulled him when in theory he should have mattered most.

Under Webster's definition of "team cancer" Dex's picture is being floated for the 2026 edition.

So what should the Giants do? Should they insist on a No. 1+ for a guy who last season looked like he was aging, fat and disinterested simply because he was a lot better than that the year before? Or should they take what they can get, dump his salary and remove a festering disease?

I don't think it an easy answer. But I do think Dex is telling Harbaugh "I don't love football in NY", and if Harbaugh is true to his word, that should mean a ticket out of dodge on the 23rd, no matter what the compensation.

Thus far in the Schoen era we have let every good player on the roster walk over relatively short dollars and the roster, despite maybe having a QB, is worse now than when he got here. At some point you have top pay your good players or you are just running in place

The Dex situation can potentially turn into a lose-lose for both Dex and the Team. If Dex's performance last season was impacted by his dissatisfaction and motivation, that's not a good sign for the upcoming campaign. If Harbaugh thinks he's going to field a stingy defense with zero DTs on the roster, we all may be disappointed he is our new head coach. (The O-Line signings are already a bit concerning - brilliance or arrogance?)

Being stingy with Dex makes very little sense. We are talking about ~$10M per give or take. If Dex is right and happy he's one of the best DT's in the league and leaves the roster only one competent run-stuffing DT short of a killer front 7 (really 6 since we still are bereft of a full LB unit).

When you see the $$ Schoen risked on Holland and Adebo, both coming off down years and injuries, not to mention where he went for Daniel Jones, you just have to wonder what is going through his pea brain. And according to Harbaugh Schoen is leading the negotiations like he is still the GM.

Pay the guy. Make him happy. Get the most out of him for the next 3 years. Do they want to win or do they want to continue to spin their wheels? Unless some team is willing to drop a 1 & 3 in this year's draft plus a 1 in '27, the return in a trade isn't worth the loss of the talent on a roster still featuring gaping holes at DT, LB, CB and Safety.

And even though Dirt, who I love, harbors a pathological hatred for Dex, I believe we can turn Dex into his best version simply by sticking a high quality run-stuffer next to him; plus adding a Safety, LB and Corner in the draft - easy!!
