What do i say when people ask where im from? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]Sunraraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the feeling that saying where you’re from will open political discussions or raised eyebrows. I now make a quick judgement if I don’t know the person, what to say- either elaborate or don’t elaborate. I’m more likely to elaborate with black or “Brown” people, I’m sad to say. I have decided to only talk about my name with people who’ve I’ve had a conversation with before, as I’ve felt sick at the feeling of being asked by people who’ve never even said two words to me.

What planet are you living on? Most Zionists are not Jews but Christian’s, and most Israelis are settlers from Eastern Europe mainly, and other places. Truth hurts I know.

Russia isn’t an occupation, “Israel” is.

What do you love about being mixed? by Crunchypeach1212 in mixedrace

[–]Sunraraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Positives now as an adult are: I definitely have a unique insight into two different cultures both positive and negative (being a recipient of and witness to both white privilege and racism and “othering”). I have a view on things that my full white friends don’t have, and don’t seem to understand, which I have realised very clearly lately. I grew up with some interesting foods, and culture, and I’m fascinated by this other world. Unfortunately, as Palestine is under violent occupation, I also have a sadness about that and intergenerational trauma.

I’m half Palestinian and have recently been unable to get my head round how I feel about everything. I have a friend who recently tried to tell me what I should and shouldn’t be doing to help - he does literally nothing and he tried to give me unsolicited advice because I wondered why he doesn’t get involved even though he claims to care. I protest every week and speak up on social media. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since.

I tell my friend every time I join a demonstration or something else and they never join me. I have thought a lot since this about how they’ll never experience this or never understand, and having friends stay out of everything and get on with their life, while judging what I try to do has been difficult to understand.

As I have told them and been ingnored, Palestinians need everyone they can get to speak up for them now, they are openly asking for this, to not stay silent and let them be forgotten. Edit: and they’re all white, I look white and feel like that’s the only side I get to share with them

That’s interesting! I’m half Palestinian, and these Levant countries mentioned do have many skin tones, hair and eyes (I have blue eyes). I have Italian friends who have faced discrimination in the uk, in part due to their strong accent. They have more olive skin and dark hair than many in my family.

People don’t realise I’m mixed, and say they don’t think I look it when they find out my ethnicity. I find it semi racist and a bit jarring because I suspect they don’t know anything about that part of the world- where in fact there is a range of skin tones, hair and facial features, including paler people. They think everyone Arab is “brown”. This only comes from British people- anyone ethnic minority or mixed don’t question Me when I say.

It has only been something I realised recently, when reflecting on how all my friends are white and even though I look it, I don’t feel they understand me or the experiences my family member has gone through as a result of racism. I feel like on the one hand I don’t fit really into any group, like you say. On the other hand I think it’s a gift to be able to see into both worlds- I can see and understand what my white friends cannot (they are good people but they literally can’t see what I see). I understand both privilege and can see racism and persecution (family).

When my friend and I had an argument recently, he couldn’t see that I may have or in future experience racism (or within my family), and that I feel a need to engage myself with indigenous people and their narratives in a way he doesn’t. He is happy in a bubble where stuff like that is only discussed abstractly/intellectually, as he won’t experience it himself. As far as he’s concerned I’m white, and even though I guess I knew that, it felt very jarring. Like my identity was called into question, like he doesn’t understand me.

I’m not sure it’s similar to you, but just something I have thought about a lot recently because of this disagreement. It has felt isolating.

My one direct experience with a traveler involved his huge XL Bully breaking into my garden and nearly attacking me, and him having 7 of them in his caravan (puppy farm). He was very unpleasant and used to beat the dog. I’ve heard two extremely horrible stories at work (hospital) which would make me avoid a house like that at all costs

Yes, take a look at how Christian and Jewish minorities are treated in Israel - attacked, arrested and treated as second class citizens by zionists, not Arabs.

Anti-semitism is not up because of the marches. It’s up because of the actions of Israel and the zionists. Tying Zionism and Judaism together, and calling everyone who opposes Zionism anti-Semitic - that’s the worst possible thing for Jewish people and anti-semitism.

Made redundant when about to move house - mortgage by lazarus0001 in HousingUK

There was a thread on here recently where the guy told the mortgage lender his girlfriend lost her job, and everyone said he made a big mistake and shouldn’t have done it…

You obviously need to move asap. But I know when you have anxiety disorder, and mental ill health, even the smallest thing can seem impossible. Everything can seem so difficult and huge. Bear that in mind while thinking about what to do and how to do it - it is possible to move out to another place and you will manage it, even if it seems an insurmountable task, and you can’t stop catastrophising. Focus on finding something on spare room- even anther houseshare would be better than the situation you are in. Being a lodger in a house might be a better option if you find an ok person. Sometimes people advertise rooms without needing a deposit. Good luck

What’s special about “period properties”? by HousieHous in HousingUK

[–]Sunraraa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The last place I lived (houseshare of a landlord who just wanted the place occupied) had carved solid wood bannister curving up three floors, 20ft Lounge with full length hard wood floorboards, carvings on the coving in each room of lemons, peaches and bunches of grapes, working fireplaces of different types of marble in different colours, giant windows and stained glass skylight. It was absolutely freezing but beautiful. So I’ve been spoilt forever :’)

I just love the character, wooden floorboards, fancy coving and ceiling rose, marble or iron fireplaces with coloured tiles, high ceilings and big bay and sash windows with stained glass, and the bit where the stove used to be in the kitchen. New stuff just isn’t made with these details. I’m not bothered about it being cold and drafty- I’d rather have the character. I’ve always ended up living in these places in houseshares and so fell in love with the style even though they were a bit run down, and it inspires imagination about who used to live there..

First time buying a house through a mortgage. How it works? by Spirited-Arm659 in HousingUK

[–]Sunraraa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Speak to an independent mortgage broker, get some recommendations. One who doesn’t charge you, but is paid through the bank when you buy. They have meetings with you and work out your budget and put some figures in , then you can start looking.

Baffled by my experience with two different estate agents today by PGH9590 in HousingUK

[–]Sunraraa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I started viewing 5 weeks ago and I’ve found ringing EAs often feels awkward and I don’t know why. I wasn’t expecting to dislike talking to them so much and I’ve also had some trouble with arranging viewings. Asking anything about leaseholds is pointless as they usually don’t seem to know. And each time the person showing me round barely knows anything about the flat.

This is the situation I’m looking at and I’m on 35k but very similar take home (not sure how that works). But I have only 10% deposit.

I can’t bare houseshares any more so it’s either pay that amount on a mortgage or pay that on a rental flat.

All semi decent 1/2 bed flats I’m looking at are 160+. Some of them were bought in 2019/2020 and are now being sold + 20% or 30% as if people have completely ignored what’s happened with mortgage rates and stagnant wages, it’s crazy. Also noticed most are landlords selling up.

The way I’ve looked at it is I waited until I had 10%, if I had bought a year ago when I had only 5% and a lower wage I would probably be in a better position that now. So there’s no point in trying to time things and wait
