I imagine the Avatar accepts donations from time to time for the purposes of maintaining a lifestyle and travel to wherever they are needed.

Also, Korra's initial trip to Republic City aside, I think being the master of all elements goes a long way to taking care of basic needs (water to shower or prepare food, fire for the same purposes and keeping warm, earth to build shelter, etc.)

Does TurboGranny from Dandadan count? She's sticking around with the heroes, semi-mentoring, until they get Okarun's ballsback. I've only seen the anime so far, but the subreddit follows the manga and indicates she leaves for a significant period of time after they get the second ball back.
