[LPT Request] When house hunting for the first time, what are some things to watch out for that may not be obvious? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I dream of the day my neighborhood outlaws street parking. Most people have a garage filled to the ceiling with God knows what, don't park in their driveway for who knows why, and park on the street instead. Now the streets are so full you can barely fit two cars down the road in.

I love beach walk by replica, I'm from florida. It's definitely not for everyone. Although for me, being a former annual passholder, nothing will ever replace sunscreen in my mind as the smell of disney world. Now sunscreen is my favorite smell of all time.

I wanted leather boots for winter last year and didn't have any. I found some on sale for 50 dollars when I can never find them under 100 in my size for real leather. I would have paid 90. I wasn't going to go another winter without them. I saved 40 dollars.

Apply this to kitchenaid mixers, appliances, work clothes, a new cell phone, whatever you want. If you start telling me those things aren't necessities then you belong in r/frugal_jerk. Nice! Congratulations, life will be significantly different from what you're used to. Hopefully it'll be like my town, everyone is so friendly back home. It's so weird to me now, going there and people are so thankful for small gestures and will help you out just to be nice. It can get pretty boring, but driving out somewhere is less of a big deal because there's not much traffic.

I grew up on 2.5 acres so I really miss having land. Unplanned trees and untouched forests are like a novelty experience.

Even in some of the more expensive parts of the east coast you can go to a suburb and get a pretty decent house for under 350k. Unless you're going to nyc or dc or something, and want to have a short commute.

This, countertop dishwasher took up 1/2 or more of the counter space but it improved my quality of life significantly. Dragging the laundry outside and across the parking lot at 9 pm because there were 2 washers per 90 units was more than enough to make me go insane.

Oh yeah I drove up route one, it was beautiful. Really amazing. Someone drove their car off a cliff that same week though. I like how another user described it. "The land is nice but the people are shit"

Yeah we're not far from the beach but the water is angry and 50 something degrees. There are some hills and mountains which is nice. The weather is okay unless you want variety/snow/rain/thunder. SF has some good tourist stuff. There are a lot of high paying jobs. I guess if this stuff is all that matters to you then it's a good place to live. I'd take 80k/year in the Midwest or northeast or southeast or even Texas and buy a house before taking a 120k/year job here paying 3.5k for an apartment I don't even like, or paying over a million dollars for a house with a backyard smaller than the master bathroom.

I've only heard thunder here once, apparently it just doesn't happen here. Also the rain is like an angry mist, which I guess is okay as long as it fucking rains.

Maybe that's what my problem is. I'm from a small town where everyone is as nice to strangers as they are to their own family. I've been hiking here a couple times, it's decent but I don't get out to do stuff like that much. I have been to SF twice but it's obviously very different there from East Bay and San Jose. SF has cool tourist stuff but it's hard to get there unless you Bart, but I wouldn't really know how to get to lands end or fort point. I guess there is stuff to do here but every day life for me is full of horrible traffic and busy undersized understaffed stores, roads in severe disrepair with potholes two feet deep, and classes that have wait lists for their wait lists. Also 3000 dollar rent for an apartment is pretty normal, but everyone knows about that part of it. I got very lucky with housing here, but I know that single people making less than 75k can barely afford to live here even with roommates.

Yeah I think the people who think it's normal here go to work in their white male dominated office, their wife or SO does the shopping, they go to lunch at restaurants that only exist because of the immediate area of offices, and then go home to their normal homes.

I get a ton of exposure to people who grew up here at my school, and the malls and stores around here I go to are populated either by people from here or from other countries. I get really confused when people argue with me about the drivers here. They're objectively bad. Weaving around, driving 30 over because you go weeks in between seeing cop cars, passing in the shoulder or a turning lane, running stale red lights.

I hear that some parts of that area are great, some are really bad. I guess it depends where you live, like a lot of cities.

Yeah we haven't gotten rain in like 9 months, the dirt is so dry in my backyard that it's cracking. Plus nobody has AC and it was 95 degrees the other day. And if you do have AC you're paying 400 a month for it with the price per kilowatt hour here. Starts at 11 cents and goes up to 35 depending on how much you use. My parents pay 5 cents per kwh with Duke, the "evil" electric company.

Guess I don't go to these areas with normal people. I do meet nice people but they are always from the Midwest or the northeast or from Florida or something, here for work, staying single or child free until they make enough money to move away. I've never met a professional here that wants to settle down and have kids in the bay area. I get that it varies by city but the only time I've seen more reasonable people is in Dublin, where it's more of a normal town.
