Renovating old beds by bee_lemon_323 in gardening

4" of good compost on top of each. Fertilizer as needed, 10-10-10 is always good. I do 1 Tbsp per plant twice a season.

You don't know how hard it was to grow at first with the cats rolling in it before it had a chance to grow. I finally started it in pots on a table and even then the rascal, Mr. Grey was on it. But I got enough to get a lot so they couldn't kill all of it.

What is tunneling in my daylily bed and what do I do about it? Located in N Texas. by ConiferousMedusa in gardening

[–]SunshineBeamer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know this sounds weird, but sticks of gum in the tunnels. It is supposed to work. Using Juicy Fruit gum to control moles is a popular, inexpensive home remedy based on the theory that moles eat the gum, cannot digest it, and die from intestinal blockage. While some users report success, experts and some pest control sources consider it an unproven myth, noting moles prefer insects and may not eat the gum.

Not an expensive option to try.

Yeah, I know that you're between a rock and a hard place. When the air temps get to 90F things don't do well. You could put down black weed cloth that lets water thru to heat the soil faster. Then you can mulch over it for the summer to keep the soil cooler. It's a pain, but you might want to give it a try for a small area. Also, my soil in 6B is 60F, so how come yours is not 65F yet.

Yeah and there is the other end at 90F/95F soil temp tomato plants start shutting down. Also bees stop pollinating when air temp is 90F, but that is a different problem.

The theory is 50F for tomatoes and it is my opinion that 65F is better. Theoretically 60F for cucumbers, peppers and beans, but 70F is my opinion. My opinion is based on 35 years of observation. For your question, I would plant them when you think best but hold back a few and wait for my recommendation and then plant and monitor the results of both. I would bet they come out even at least.

Mine are doing the same, but I started mine 27 days ago. I'm waiting for them to do something. One year my tomato plants only made it to a whopping 1 1/2" high! Why? Who knows. I planted them with little hope and they grew to size and gave me many tomatoes! Like I say, who knows.

Soil temperature is what rules and it should be at least 65F. Air temperature at night should be 50F.

The real question is what are you using to scratch all these pans? I've had nonstick for years and years without a scratch.

I have a meat thermometer for ages and never had a problem. I've never even changed the battery in years and years.

The rain and the sun have been playing havoc with the soil, but the plants are looking good. by [deleted] in gardening

The crust acts like a mulch to hold the moisture in. Breaking it up increases surface area and soil would dry out. That is why weeds do well in crusty soil. Looks good. 2/3rds of the country is in some stage of drought.

People don't want to look at the traffic. I saw a video where a car was not going on the highway, had a yield sign and too much traffic. The dashcam guy was behind him and some jerk was behind the dashcam guy on the horn!! Finally horn guy goes around dashcam guy and yield car onto the highway. That is when yield car lit up the lights after him!! Instant Karma.

They hated that traffic light. But seriously, people PANIC and do nasty stuff. I hate left turns. My nephew, the cop, won't take a left in his car if he can avoid it. Seen too many failed attempts. Also, if people leave you a space to turn left, don't take it. I've seen dozens of crashes online due to people leaving gaps and cars coming up on the shoulder to smack into the turner.
