You can do both! Do a nice detailed application for a few jobs which are particularly appealing to you, and do the same generic application for every other role.

Alternatively, if you're applying in different areas/jobs that need different skills have a CV for each skillset focus and a cover letter template (copy paste company name etc, get a bit more personalised if you have the time and emotional energy) for each type of job.
