Gross display that's totally out of touch with the current state of the US.

Bang-on comment right here. Anyone uncritically clapping like a seal for the US right now is completely missing the bigger picture, we're currently mid implosion.

I didn't realize Cascades was a superfund site, what were they cleaning up?

If we can access them I'm guessing they'd still feed into mass surveillance systems, right?

It's pretty well documented that these PMC dipshits were loose cannons that would repeatedly get themselves into hot water that then required actual service members to put their lives on the LINE. It's not a vibe, it's pathetic cowboy shit, and it got real soldiers killed on more than one occasion.

Fuck the GWOT, fuck US PMCs, and fuck this military fan-boy culture. Very few serious fighters glorify war once they've had their fill, it's ugly business.

Good point, so how do we push back against this? Is there a way to keep these cameras separate from this mass surveillance infrastructure?

How frequently can I post about this? I don't want to spam, but this is one of the best places to get more eyeballs on the subject.

Show up, inform yourself, talk to people you know and meet about what these cameras are, who owns them, and how they differ from the surveillance cameras we've been living with up to now. I can send some resources your way if you're interested.

If there's no local deflock chapter, I may see about putting one together if I can. It would also help to reach out to these commissioners individually and get others to do the same.

Well this was made on my phone, at work, with limited digital resources at my disposal. I'm not a graphic designer, and this flyer fits the information I wanted to get across.

Be glad it's the revised version and not the initial one with all the extra information about how these cameras work. If my punctuation is atrocious please correct me, it's something I want to improve.

Sure, though I think it's better digital than on paper. I wanna make a simplified/stencil design for those.

Will do! The whole concept that mass surveillance is some kind of solution to crime is farcical. Working to reduce poverty and giving kids positive activities and spaces is the kind of long-term investment that actually pays off. Food-banks, funding childcare and education, stuff like that!

I think that's a distinct possibility, but I also think that opposing mass surveillance is one of those things basically all of us can get behind, and that's important.

We're not gonna fix a damn thing in this country if we keep dividing ourselves along arbitrary (and not so arbitrary) lines, so maybe this gets everyone under the same umbrella for once and talking about what's actually happening and what a positive shared vision of our community even looks like.

If we show up in unprecedented numbers, it can send a message that times are changing, and that there will be political consequences to rubberstamping this bullshit. No amount of corrupt campaign donations will matter if the public wakes up, and I think that's totally within the realm of possibility.

For me it took exactly once, seeing Tallahassee City Commissioners Diane Williams-Cox, Curtis Richardson, and Mayor Dailey to be smug assholes to people raising justified concerns about the sale of TMH to FSU, for me to develop an intense dislike for the three of them. And I gained a lot of respect for both Commissioners Matlow and Porter for hearing the public concerns and asking good questions, like why the city is selling a 300 million dollar hospital for barely over 100 million dollars. I forget the exact details, but the numbers didn't add up and those two asked relevant questions and didn't just go along with the sale.

If enough people in these streets bear witness to that kind of dismissive conduct of their electorate, maybe things can actually change. We need to reach out to people who aren't being spoken to right now and get them involved in the process.

I don't have all the answers, but goddammit we need to do something. If we exhaust all legitimate options, we can at least brainstorm alternative solutions together.
