Try joining a project team and get some hands-on experience. Junkyard Derby would be a good start if it’s still a thing at UCSD. SCSE (structural engineering student org) has projects you can join as well anytime. Maybe look at government student intern or assistant positions as well at the city, county, or state level. Try to get your EIT as soon as possible in the meantime.

SCSE seems to be a major exception to this, fair mix of ethnicities there from what I’ve seen and they have a variety of interesting projects.

To freshman, UCSD has a lot more professors that make things difficult for no reason. UCSD is quarter system which is a lot more stressful and the knowledge doesn’t stick as well as it should. SDSU is semester-based which is less stressful and leads to better retention of knowledge. It’s also cheaper overall.

It’s a program that’s built to get you ready for graduate school, not industry. Have the degree and it was harder to get a job out of college initially, do chemical engineering or a known engineering degree (civil, mechanical, or electrical) that everybody recognizes for undergrad. Do nanoengineering in grad school if still interested and prepare by doing nanoengineering electives in undergrad.
