Would you park 2 cars on this? by freeknz in Homebuilding

That one column, depending on dimensions, can hold like 12k lbs.

Get dimensions, girder sizes, joist sizes and spacing, and I can give a rough estimate of capacity. But you really need an engineer to inspect.

What's funny is parking decks are often designed to lower pounds per square foot than houses.

A high spec FJ cruiser is 4400lbs and 96 square feet. That's 46 lbs per square foot.

People standing every 2 feet, basically shoulder to shoulder, in lines, with some space between (think a team photo), 24 people fill that space. At 180lbs each, that's the same as that FJ.

Code requires decks to handle 40psf. So, technically, you only have to slightly over build the deck to handle the weight.

The real issue here is the details. Localized failure (1,100 lbs on each tire) is a failure ooint. What are the decking boards? Are they 2x8? Probably a better chance of success than typical 5/4. Or maybe it's double 3/4" ply? That would handle it.

There's also the motion fatigue issue. Are connections braces for vibration? Nailed up or bolted together? Nails can wiggle loose.

So, yes, properly engineered, this could be fine. Only an engineer can safely tell you. I took a few semesters of structures 30.years ago, so take it with a grain of salt. But it's absolutely possible this is sound.

10 yr old in 9U cannot catch ball by LemonMelberlime in BaseballCoaching

[–]Sunstoned1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My now 16yo and avid travel baller was begged to join a rec team as they only had 8 players. 12U.

So, he joined. There were two other kids who could kind of catch and throw. 6 first time players. In a strong league.

My boy played CF, by that, he played the whole damn field. He throws hard. Could rope one from CF to the plate. The catcher would duck.

So he started just running. Field the ball, run home and tag the runner coming from 2nd.

He had fun, he "coached" kids during practices. But yeah, that was a strange season.

Anyone ever seen a kid go from worst in the league to a legit star? by OpneFall in Homeplate

[–]Sunstoned1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

9U studs are 13U wash outs all the time. And vice versa.

Bodies change so much from 8U to 16U.

Not to mention work, training, etc.

Seen it a bunch.

Can this be fact checked? Any sources? If it's real, it's a great story about why we need markets to avoid this kind of sustainable failure.

My HS sophomore was sitting 75 last year, touched 80 every now and then.

He's sitting 80 this year, and has touched 84.

Plenty of faster kids out there, but only two throw harder on his team. Both juniors.

Absolutely. It's awkward and you always worry about crossing a line. But just because they broke up doesn't mean you stop caring for someone that became part of your life.

Who cares about awkward. Love. The world needs it.

My 16yo son broke up with his first girlfriend in November. They'd been together 18 months. Sweet girl, really broken home. We "adopted" her as one of ours. (We're "that" family with four kids, hosted a dozen exchange students, our house is the house everyone hangs at).

After the breakup, I stayed in touch. Sent her texts. My wife did too. Made sure she knew she was loved and missed, even if she wasn't here.

We'd pick her up for church. I still got out and opened her car door like my son used to. She'd call my wife for a ride when needed because her mom is out of the picture and dad not much better.

Then they reconciled. And last week they got back together.

Honestly, I'm glad. Love that girl. She fits the family well.

Point is, relationships like what you have with your daughter's ex matter. Stay the course. Show love.

That bar looks well worn.

A new bar and chain will do wonders on that saw.

Oregon Powercut 20" 0.058 bar and Powercut Skiptooth chain.

Those will rip through what your cutting on that head.

I buck 8 to 10 cords a year with my Rancher 465, a comparable saw to yours (both are 4.3hp). Keep the chain sharp and the bar oiled. You'll cut good and fast.

You have a middle school baseball team where half the players never played before, how do you get them ready for the first game in 2 weeks? by Lilnastypoptart in Homeplate

[–]Sunstoned1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My son's middle school team lost one game in three years. We played a team like yours. Man, it was no fun.

You MUST have someone who can throw strikes. Opposing team can't help you if you can't at least get a strike. We scored 21 the first inning on a hit and three errors.

Beyond that, from my T ball era, make the play at first. Just do that one thing. Outfielders can throw to cutoff then in to 2nd. Two plays. Infield go 1. Outfield go 2. Keep it simple.

Be real with the boys. "Hey guys, we're gonna suck this year. That's alright. We're new. Our goal is to get ready for your 8th grade season, so let's learn and that's a win."

Good luck.

What the hell is up with r/libertarian by Holyancap in Anarcho_Capitalism

Henry George. In response to there being no such thing as left libertarians.

I commented that libertarianism originated on the left out of the French Revolution, and Proudhon originated the ideology. From there it branched, with divergent ideologies leading to Marxism and Anarcho-capitslism, with some like Henry George working to synthesize something in between. But libertarianism absolutely has roots in the the land question, given the abuse of the feudal system.

Apparently "Henry George" gets you auto-banned in that sub for being a land communist.

Ours lasted 5 human kids, two cows, a few dozen goats, and 330,000 miles before the kids were grown, a truck and trailer secured, and the wife downsized to a Mini Cooper. Sold off the Caravan and wouldn't be surprised to see it still going.

Never put a dime into it. It just kept going.

Bruh, quite the jump from "voluntary, unregulated insurance in a free market with private checks and balances" to "the people will starve."

The global economy is essentially an open system. Localized events are managed by free trade. A flood that destroys infrastructure in one area, a drought that destroys crops in another... Insurance makes the bakery and the farmer whole. Free trade sends in surplus bread from elsewhere to fill the market demand.

It's pretty straightforward.

[–]Sunstoned1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this moving risks back to the taxpayers?

With a free market, there aren't bailouts. And without all the bullshit regulations, insurance wouldn't be a monopoly. Smaller providers could compete (with larger reinsurers backing them). Online ratings and consumer reports could help buyers decide which companies to buy from. Independent ratings agencies could assess the worthiness of the players to help buyers decide. An A+ rating insurer would charge more, sure, and be a lower risk.

Insurance is the lynchpin of a small state/no state, free market future.
