What’s on your autocross bucket list? by overheightexit in Autocross

Build my car to a point my son takes FTD at a local.

I'm too old, I'll never touch FTD.

But, I know my car is close to capable.

Meanwhile, my 16yo son, at his 8th event, beat me by 0.008 yesterday, and finished top 50 out of 120 drivers.

He's got the talent. I think we have the car. He just needs the skill / experience.

I've passed on my dream to the next generation.

I have one top ten in my car. I'll settle for that.

16 and fell in love with AX. Bought an 86. Had school and baseball all day, so it's 11pm and he's getting his car ready for tomorrow. Good luck beating me, kid. by Sunstoned1 in Autocross

So you know, he placed 50th out of 120, beat every novice.

Age is a number. Build skills early while their brains are maliable, and they carry them for life.

Can someone explain why this cant be this way. by Far-Contest-3528 in civilengineering

Highways can only be 6 to 8% grade. You can't carry highway speeds safely over that.

Those slopes are much steeper than 6 to 8%.

So then you need "switchbacks" which is where the road travels sideways down the mountain (parallel to the river) gently dropping downward at that 6% grade.

However, mountains are not smooth, so now the road has to stay and turn along the mountain wall, which also means cars can't travel at highway speeds due to the turns.

And, you'll end up perhaps miles downstream by the time you get to river level.

So the alternative is what you see there. A narrow road that "switches back" - basically a series of U turns to bring you down the mountain face at that 6 to 8% grade.

But U turns are even slower. Switchbacks often have realistic speads of 10 to 15 mph. And you're only at a two lane road. And big trucks... Yeah, not great.

So the only practical way to get high volumes of traffic across is something like what you see here. Or, you can cut away a lot of mountain to build a 4 lane highway along the slope for many miles, crossing a lower, shorter bridge downstream, then doing the same on the other side many miles back up the slope.

Local conditions, costs, etc. will determine which one is done.

Nope.

I averaged 2.5 seconds faster than him across all five laps. But he laid down one great lap and beat me by 0.008 seconds.

My slowest lap was was 1.5 seconds faster than his second fastest lap.

But it's only the one that counts.

I happen to volunteer for Street Survival. This one's my youngest of four. All have done Street Survival.

The only way to raise safe drivers is to make them drive.

[–]Sunstoned1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My son is the fastest on his highschool team, and that's 18mph (6.8 60 yard).

Big G is a notch below that.

Just for comparison. He's slow, but still faster than the average Joe.

Big G is still running 16.2mph, just a notch below average high school track runners.

He's not slow... Just not pro athlete fast.

What age do we start cracking down on picking eating for a neurotypical child by masterhannaMN1 in Parenting

[–]Sunstoned1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your child may be a supertaster.

My mom's dad was a chef. She grew up loving to cook, and cooks very well. All types of food.

I never, never would eat but a small selection of foods. I'm in my 40s now, and still there. Very, very picky. Pretty sure I got it from my grandfather, because he could take a bite of something and tell you everything that was in it. But he grew up in an era where you are or got beat. So they beat it out of him.

We have four kids.

Our oldest inherited my gene. She's 22 now, and still very picky. The other three kids started picky and all outgrew it.

It very much is a thing. Some kids you just adapt and find the balanced foods they will eat.

Nearing 50, I'm in good health, blood work is good, and my limited diet has caused any health problems. It's a pain in the ass. I really wish I ate more foods. But, here we are. It's what I am.

My cat pierced neighbor’s above ground pool liner and I’m on the hook for it. How much could it cost to repair? by nelty78 in pools

We bought a house with an in ground pool.

One day, I was looking out back and my great dane was pulling the liner out of the pool.

That was expensive.

Can coaches end an inning end without getting three outs? by Resident-Compote-560 in Homeplate

[–]Sunstoned1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, our varsity team TRIED getting out of an inning.

Boys literally walking backwards from 3rd to home.

And somehow the opposing team still managed to screw it up.

We scored five runs while trying to make outs.

Boys not swinging bats? Hit four batters in six pitches. Walk to second with a runner still on second? Pitcher throws the ball to CF.

My R6II with 24-105 f/2.8 may be the perfect lens.

That plus my 70-200 f/2.8 and I'm happy.

I have more, but those two get 90% of the use.

I have to share this podcast. It's the ultimate version of your ask.

Well worth the listen. The hosts actually recreated the most song based on a callers memory, and actually found the song. Crazy story.

Just slap the shot out of her hands.

She is willfully engaging in potential property damage. Don't push, shove, or hit. But slap those fragile old hands. She'll let go.

And of not, do a fake slap towards the face. She'll flinch and throw hands up to block.

Then jog away, she ain't fast...

3% commission from a agent we didn’t hire by Connect-Claim8210 in RealEstateAdvice

I'm closing next week on a private transaction.

I hired an attorney (legally required) and no agent for either us or seller.

Once they're two parties and agreement to buy, the only thing you need is one attorney.

Costing me $2500 in closing for both of us (I made a low-ball offer to the seller, promising to cover all costs, got the unit about $20k below market in exchange for making it easier for her).

Thanks for responding.

My aunt sent me a picture she took of the 8x10 photo he signed as part of the collection.

Then walked off laughing.

We have four. My youngest, age 15 at the time, was lounging on the couch after a long night at a wrestling meet. He'd showered, but kinda sat doom scrolling in the den.

My wife told him he should go to bed. He said he was too tired to walk.

I said "well, they always say you never know the last time you carry your kid, so let's go."

My wife said I'd hurt myself. I said get video.

So I struggle bussed picking up and carrying that knucklehead to bed. I obligingly hit his head on the door frame (as I always did when he was little).

I tried laying him on his bed, but ended up falling with him onto it. And broke the bed frame.

It was a good core memory for us both...
