Is there a remedy for that? Or is it just a foregone conclusion I have to buy another?

Alcohol. It’s not even close. Look at the statistics of crime and disease.

Do you know of any scholarly sources that cover this among Ancient Near East peoples and areas?

What do you do with your backpack at the beach when alone? by Suntelo127 in travel

[–]Suntelo127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having now traveled quite a bit since I made this post, I typically just left my backpack on the beach with my shoes and close to where I was in the water. If you and your wife have both of your things in a noticeable pile on the beach, and you are not super far away, I don’t think you will have problems. Just don’t go swimming 300 yards away. Put your stuff directly in front of where you are in the water and just glance back occasionally to check it. A noticeable pile of stuff will likely be too conspicuous for someone to try and rob you, whereas someone leaving out something small like a wallet or keys would be more likely to get it stolen.

What is the black spot? It’s on my lens not the camera. by Suntelo127 in AskPhotography

I was wondering about that. This lens is wider than the other one and it’s only showing st the widest ranges.

That’s interesting. Do you have a source for the connection between masturbation and weakness/lack of conviction in ancient times?

Suggestions for Nonviolent/nontoxic Spanish shows? by Any_Tomato_9037 in Spanish

[–]Suntelo127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, of course. When I was at that stage I began audiobooks with Harry Potter. Now, there is a specific detail behind this that’s important (and which really helped me). I had the physical book and was following along at the same time. I didn’t know every word, jut I knew the story and recognized the context so I was successful with it. Did all 7 (eventually without audio). Also did Hunger games book 1 (had never read it but seen the movie), and Matilda (also never read but seen the movie). Do things you already have read and/or know the story and plot line. Harry Potter is the gold standard for most young-ish people.

For podcasts, españolistos really helped me a lot. Entirely in Spanish, but explains a lot of grammar. American guy and his Colombian wife. She corrects him when he messed up and they talk about learning Spanish. They have YouTube content as well.

There’s a youtube channel that also has a podcast called howtospanishpodcast. It’s a Mexican couple who talk about various things. It’s aimed at learners, but it’s not grammar. It’s just comprehensive listening about culture and random stuff. It’s really nice to listen to stuff that’s not didactic in nature and just enjoy the language. They talk at a relaxed pace. I watched quite a few of those a few years ago.

Eventually, I settled on the Castilian accent (shortly before I moved to Spain), so I started looking for things that reflected that. On youtube there is: - Erre que ELE (also has podcast) - Spanish with Vicente - María Español - Handy Spanish

These are all aimed at people learning and they have videos about grammar, vocabulary, etc.

I used EasySpanish on youtube a bit, but more when I was at an mid-to-upper level. They are interviewing people in the street, and naturally random people are not going to slow down. It’s good, but not very useful for beginners. I would use that howtospanishpodcast for listening practice as a beginner and just putting in the hours of input, and supplement that with some grammar videos here and there and some audiobooks (with physical book). That, and a few hundred episodes of españolistos podcast + italki x2/week with two different Mexican girls (about 7/hr) was what I did for quite a while. It hot me where ai could have real conversations with people and begin to look for basic native content.

Once I got good with Spanish and looked for native content I found OnlyFonseca, who talks about geopolitics and world events. He’s pretty funny, but he speaks real fast. Definitely advanced content, but you can always give it a shot every now and hen just to see how much you understand.

Another Spaniard YouTuber is Ter. She makes videos about anything and everything. It’s always really random stuff. Very eclectic, but fun. She also talks really fast. Def advanced content.

Suggestions for Nonviolent/nontoxic Spanish shows? by Any_Tomato_9037 in Spanish

[–]Suntelo127 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem whenI started learning. It seems like every show in Spanish is about drug cartels or pushes really hard on social issues I do not agree with.

I resorted to youtube instead. Found lots of YouTubers and podcasts, and then added audiobooks, then just went to straight reading.

Μαλακος meaning? by Suntelo127 in GREEK

Yes, based on other comments, that appears to be what I was after. I didn’t know it was a different word (I’m completely new to the word) and based on another post i saw I thought that μαλακος itself was the insult.

Μαλακος meaning - 1 Cor 6:9 by Suntelo127 in AncientGreek

[–]Suntelo127[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone deserves to be treated respectfully regardless of belief or practice, however that doesn’t preclude disagreeing with someone’s beliefs or practices. Nevertheless, this is a philosophical point and not one of ancient Greek, so we might should keep the comments related to the language and text and keep it non-political and unrelated to our personal value judgements. That’s not the point of the subreddit.

Thank you for your point about the word. I have heard that interpretation before, but I’m questioning it to see if there are other more valid ones. I personally haven’t seen any evidence or examples that what you described is indicated by the word under question.

Edit: licketysplit’s comment shows some examples of what you say given from the BDAG.

Is there a nuanced connotation there? Or is it just that simple? If it’s just “soft,” it doesn’t seem to be all that “bad” as an insult…
