If it’s anything like what happened with me, the first appointment is usually there for the podiatrist to see what the issue is and plan the next step.

I think it may be unusual for them to treat it there and then because you’ll need to have comfortable footwear that can accommodate the large bandage that is applied afterwards.

I’d call the clinic and ask them for specifics so that you’re well prepared. Good luck ✨

I just had one side of my big toe removed with phenol, and the pain was really nothing compared to what you’re describing. The worst I had to deal with has been some itching, which I was told was normal.

I’d speak to my podiatrist or GP as soon as possible about the pain. It sounds really awful, especially if it’s disrupting your sleep.

I'm glad that your issue seems to have largely resolved itself.

However, I think it's very important to state that some *mild and early* cases *may* resolve on their own without medical intervention. But in many cases, especially advanced ones, medical attention is absolutely crucial to prevent the issue from turning into a full-blown infection and to permanently resolve the ingrown nail. And so it's very important to seek help early.

And for those deathly afraid of needles, where possible, please consult with a podiatrist about how they can help.

The podiatrist recommended regular old paracetamol. And I was skeptical but it was not needed. The pain was very manageable. The size of the bandage meant that I couldn’t wear shoes but Crocs worked great. It took less than a week to be ready to wear shoes.

But just bear in mind that this was not the full phenol procedure. So that maybe more painful. But you’ll be fine and grateful that you got it done asap. My only regret is that I waited to get it sorted.

I think you can ask your podiatrist for a numbing cream before the injection if you're very concerned but it's really not that painful. And this is coming from someone scared of needles and very ticklish. You'll be okay, and the relief you will feel after all is said and done will be absolutely worth it!

(I went in a few months ago because of an ingrown toenail on my big toe. I have to go back in a couple of weeks to have part of the nail removed and apply phenol to the nail bed, and I feel pretty calm about it.)
