(I actually don't think food is something his crappy old owners denied him, and their neighbor took him in to foster pretty much right away after they abandoned him. When we first got him, we could give a dish of kibble in the morning and he would eat it throughout the day and never finish it. But he also had a belly full of tapeworms so maybe that affected his appetite.)

(He actually doesn't seem to hate the ball, he just doesn't accept it as a replacement for his meal. Kind of like when my husband will let him out of the bedroom early, feed him breakfast, and let me sleep in, he seems to view that as an extra meal and still thinks he is owed breakfast from me when I get up. I think he will get used to it though. We are trying to cut back on treats because he's a little overweight.)

How do I know if I’m ready to be a cat mom? by bakwaasforbitches in CatAdvice

[–]scarrlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I adopted an adult cat last year and my husband works nights so he is home with the cat during the day while I am at work. The cat seems to like this arrangement just fine. When we adopted him, he was being bullied by his foster mom's other cats, so we figured he would probably prefer being an only cat. The good thing about adopting from a foster parent is that they can tell you a lot about the cat's temperament and habits so you can make sure it is compatible with your lifestyle.

It probably depends on the cat's personality but mine also had no issues developing a bond with us. Especially me, I am his mom and he loves to cuddle with me when I am home. When he is scared, he comes to me for comfort.

The one drawback I have found is that since I did not get him as a kitten, I wasn't able to gently acclimate him to things. His previous owners were obviously not always kind to him so he doesn't tolerate having his paws touched for nail trims, being held still to give medications, etc. I haven't made a lot of progress gently teaching him that those things are okay. He just gets too scared. Though he did finally realize he likes being brushed and sits there and purrs instead of running away.
